I looked up the lead designer and this is the only credit I see.

Looks like an old school hardcore rpg. Hopefully this grounds things.

How is that a bad thing?


It is a huge disrespect to equate Mass Effect with an FTP shooter. It is NOT some kind of Call-of-Duty, guns-first concept that makes most of us Mass Effect fans. It's the cinematic story and space opera appeal. If you're into the guns and the shooting foremost, then your Mass Effect experience was vastly different than mine and, I hope, different from the majority of players.

What does that have to do with the writer? Writers can write different kinds of stories. It's kind of their job. 

 

Besides, Mass Effect fans for years have complained about how Bioware is pandering more towards the casual gamers than them, and Chris' main complaint against him is how he wrote a story so deep in the lore that casual fans were confused. Sounds like an answer to your and the Bioware fans who complained prayers to me.

I get what you mean by casual gamer, that it was less skill-based and more movie-like, but please DO NOT think that the deep and complex lore written by Chris is one of the attributes for casual gaming. The deep and complex lore....obviously DUMBING IT DOWN and getting rid of it would be pandering to casual gamer sheep. Are you for real? This is common sense and I'm honestly bothered like you're a troll and I can't even bring myself to reply to you further lest I suffer a heart attack asap.

Would a casual fecking gamer be spamming a message board all day? No. Clearly this game meant something special to fans beyond casual gaming.

You misread my post completely. I am saying that for players who love having games delve deep into the lore, Chris is a great choice for a writer since he does exactly that.

I agree that amping up the combat and making the combat more difficult would be great. But then I'd just hire the Halo writer for those bits and then hire a more bookish writer for the rest ;___;

I know writers write lots of things but I have a feeling that videogame execs point to the feelings of past works to guide future ones when hiring writers ;___;

Chris isn't going to dumb down the lore. Some people who played Halo 4 said that he put too much lore into Halo 4, to the point where people who didn't know the lore got confused at parts. You want them to keep all the lore as deep, and Chris will do exactly that. Where's the problem? 

 

I'm not talking about combat or gameplay at all. I am discussing solely story.

I almost agree with everything you wrote OP with the only point of divergence being to look at ME2...well for me ME2 was the weakest of all ME games both storywise and in atmosphere. The plot really didn't make much sense and if we speak about the music ME2 introduced the orchestal dramatic music and reduced the 80s feel (bladerunnerish) and electronic music many of us loved from ME1. The Suicide mission was very well done I agree with you on that but compared to what the rest of the other missions that game entailed (solving personal problems) I say it's better they avoid going that route again. Plus ME2 was more Hollywood/mainstream that you can imagine with loads of cheap actions scenes and one-liners.

 

I do agree with you that they should drink wine and not beer and push for an harder sci-fi experience but if that is the case they should look to ME1 and it's bright utopistic future. ME2 pushed so much into the gritty aspect of the universe to the point that it somehow felt depressing. I woud love the Asimov utopistic feeling of ME1 to come back.

Yeah well for me, I played it all for the first time back to back so I felt like ME1 & ME2 were part of the same game. Change of tone in the intermission but mostly just an exciting character drama swiftly riding upon an Asimov wave.
