I find that getting credits in this game is a lot harder than in ME1, especially since enemies no longer drop it. Are there any easy ways to earn cash besides just the random finds on missions?

Bet on Varren fights on Tuchanka! No, don't do that. As far as I can tell, pretty much just finding it on missions is the best way. I'm sure there are some bribes a renegade can take along the way.

 xCarn4g3x,
Thanks for brining up this topic. I'm in the same boat.. I would like to earn money as I would like to upgrade my ship asap among other things.

I have utilized the renegade technique to earn more money than usual.. This helps.

So doing missions is the best way to get copious amounts of money?:D

As far as I can tell. I generally hover somewhere around 250k, buying stuff periodically. There don't seem to be a LOT of things to buy. Most acquisitions are done through resources.

I feel bad for the people that did not improt ME1 characters, because I got a 130,000 credit starting bonus, and its still only good for a couple upgrades. But it kinda nice I guess having something to strive for..

There isn't much to buy, but you can run out of money. I will say though that having a good mineral stash is more important, and I spent hours today surveying planets to make sure my stash was enough for all the upgrades I wanted. The Normandy Med Bay and the Upgraded Turian cannons took like 50k platinum each, but didn't cost me any credits (unless you count the money spent on probes/fuel).

The inventory and trade windows are not like ME1. You have your armor, you purchase upgrades to armor and your guns. I have not seen any armor suits or weapons for sale, just upgrades. You can also salvage upgrades from fallen enemies (if interactable) and research them on the Normandy (you will have had to recruit Mordin). That research is where you use minerals.

There are other items you can buy, they serve as decoration for your quarters or fulfilling side-quests (what the game calls assignments) for Normandy crew members (not the ones in your squad). But those items are generally cheap.

I'm finding I dont have enough credits to buy the upgrades you find in the stores. I wish we could sell off some of the resources, I mean that really would make sense, being able to turn in some of that hard earned iridium for extra credits. Granted you dont need creds for a lot, but when you do it then it sucks you cant sell stuff.

AFAIK there are 2 upgrades per weapon type that can only be gained via store purchases. That's:

Assault Rifle Damage x2

Sniper Rifle damage x2

Heavy Pistol Damage x2

SMG Damage x2

Shotgun Damage x2

Then you have Armor Bonus x2

Heavy Skin Weave x?

Most of these are 25k, 50k or 75k credits each, with Heavy Skin Weave at 90k I believe. All together I reckon you need around 500k - 700k credits to purchase all of these. Added to this is your Biotic and Tech damage upgrades, which are expensive. With all the probes you need to scan enough minerals for the subsequent upgrades it becomes an economic nightmare! I think probes cost 10k per 5 probes. I wonder how many probes I've bought in total? Let's say I get the Modular Probe upgrade asap, so I have room for 60 probes. That's what? 120,000 cr for one purchase of 60 probes? That's about 3 - 6 planets if they're all rich to start with. That will probably get you a good 20,000 for each resource if you're frugal and lucky. Most tier 3 upgrades cost upwards of 25,000 resource units. That is some crazy economy (considering there is nobody in the galaxy who buys or sells mineral resources). My opinion is that the whole economy needs reworking. I mean, the money you make from missions cannot possibly allow one to upgrade absolutely everything. Feel free to correct my math (it's never been my strongest attribute).

Probes are cheap, only 100 credits per five or so(unless I am totally wrong, will now have to chech in game), no where near 10k per, you would go broke if that was the case.  Also, unless you just love scanning, there really is no reason to waste time scanning every little nook of a planet unless you need a resource to upgrade.  For me the trick is to only scan when you need resources and if you are looking for N7 mission, quick scan and only probe the ones with missions, otherwise leave your probes in the bays.  Don't waste the time or money scanning and probing unless you need an upgrade.

I like the shortage of credits. Unlike ME1, you have to make more strategic decisions when it comes to deciding what to upgrade.

Do missions.

Really

Only way to earn credits in this game. Not only are there loots from enemies/crates but you also receive Cerberus funding for the completion of each mission. Look at the mission summary at the end of each mission. You'll see that Cerberus funding usually matches or is greater than whatever credits you've looted.

Also remember that there are other ways of getting upgrades than paying for them. Recruitment missions and loyalty missions usually have at least one lootable upgrade each.

On a first playthrough it's not really possible to buy everything, short of INSANE patience with saving and reloading the varren fights on Tuchanka, so you'll need to prioritize. I recommend not buying the Hacking Module or Bypass Module, since those minigames are very easy even without the upgrade (and if they give you any trouble, you can always quicksave before each one). Upgrades for weapons your main character does not use would be next on the chopping block.

On 2nd and subsequent playthroughs you get a large amount of bonus credits to start, and you also seem to get more credits from the missions, so you can buy all the upgrades.

If you give Urz the meat from the kiosk, you can use Urz in the varren fights. Urz wins alot more often than losing. Still, the best way to get credits is, as others have said, to do missions.

You are correct with regards to missions, although in the end you can't reach any upgrade's cap without purchasing two tiers of it with credits.

You can save a fairly significant amount of credits by using the paragon/renegade options, dropping for instance the cost of the weapon upgrades from 60K to 50K.  But either way, if you want to get more than 3/5, you have to visit stores, with one exception, that being either a bonus heavy weapon ammo or a bonus assault rifle on zaeed's loyalty mission.  And even then, you'll still need to visit stores to get either of those to 6/6.

It's easier once you open up the long campaign achievement.  If you import a rich ME1 character then, you can start the game in excess of 300k credits.  Which is a big help.

I just started playing ME2 after finishing ME where I was a multi-millionaire, now I am a pauper again.  Great.  Strike one.  Am I correct in assuming that you can not sell items?  I don't see that option.  Jeeze this is like playing DAO without the money exploit which I did too many times.

You don't have items to sell. Fortunately, you don't have the huge waste of time that is inventory management, either.

Loot safes and hack datapads. You *will* end up with a surplus by the end of the game, and fortunately you don't have *that* much to buy either.

DLC missions will put you way over the top. Though you would need at least 3/6 dlc missions to get enough credits for everything.

First, Import a saved ME1 game if you can.

Next, when you get the chance, go for hacking extending upgrades if like me sometimes you run out of time before finishing a hack. If not, then forget this.

Do all side missions and look everywhere, because in walk in containers in places like cargo areas on missions, are things like boxes of resources, PDAs that give you money, wall safes etc. Plus Cerberus pays you for doing those Side Missions.

On Horizon, before you do the last section on fixing the satellite tracking system for the gun, go into every house and check everywhere, laptops have money, wall safes, you name it, plus there is ammo to be had.

As the OP said, the DLCs give you lots of money too.

Be sure during the missions to keep an eye out for "salvage", those blue squares, you can get thousands of credits for some salvage. Collector’s ship mission, Jacob and Garrus mission has some nice salvage in it. Also funny enough during Garrus mission you find 600 credits in a trash can right besides a door you pass through.

After a battle slowly pan around the room and anything worthwhile will show up
both as a blue square and text.

This isn't really a way to make money, but I think it also helps in the beginning to watch your spending too. Don't run around buying all the toy ships, armour pieces, and weapons upgrades that won't be used. Figure out which weapons you and your usual team use and buy only those upgrades. Come back for the rest when you have more cash.

Ok that is a joke.
Do side missions, look through crates and lockers on the walls. Dog fighting is fun to. (the games lack of volus telling me to play quasar disturbs me.)  Remember that TIM gives you money for each mission complete.

I'm sorry but she's all tuckered out from that Hanar bachelor party. Or was it bachelorette party... I really don't care, credits is credits.
