Gotta love me some crates.
They should have made the SR1 out of these things.
I like the idea, but the only way to make covers more organic is if most of the time the player needs to create them. Knocking down tables, couches, cabinets and so on. and also make them destructible, forcing the player to move around intensely during fights. That would make for a very interesting experience, and would recover (and improve) ME1's sense of constant danger.
The shooting galleries of the sequels won't be missed. Bioware needs to give us freedom of approach with more natural level design instead of throwing waves of enemies in front of our face in rooms with crates/cover perfectly and meticulously placed. Immersion went right out the window with that crap.

I really like this idea. Sounds like something that would be really hard to implement properly (animations, controls, AI and all) but in principle, it would be a nice thing to have.
Agreed. I also loved the ME1 concept of being shot on the citadel. It adds "realism" ... I guess.
I would love Andromeda to break out of the mould of battle stages. It was almost predictable throughout the trilogy when you were going to be attacked and by what. It would be great if it were more random and unexpected. I think they did a good job of portraying this type of combat in Inquistion... now it would be great if they could pull it off for ME:A.

This is a next gen game, so the processing power is maxed out a lot. I willing to wait for the game for more two or three years if it would mean a really innovative experience. And a mechanic like this would mean that potentially every map you are on can become a battlefield in a matter of seconds. It would really keep me on my toes.
I never really understood this criticism of the sequels. The first game had just as many conveniently indestructible crates as ME2. I suspect the only reason no one remembers it is because the way ME1 was balanced, you never really needed cover (likely to compensate for how atrocious the cover mechanics were). There's still plenty of cover in all the places the OP mentioned, not necessarily crates in every case, but ME1's spontaneous fights weren't just out in the open.
The only thing ME2 is at fault for is not having anyone try to kill you outside of missions, which was either an oversight or something BioWare didn't feel was necessary, or possibly it was a memory restriction for creating more visually detailed hub environments. Certainly has nothing to do with the level design. Just looking at ME2's hubs, I can see an adequate amount of potential cover basically everywhere.
However, I have a feeling that ME:A will probably drop the cover system for the most part, as designing levels with cover in mind (and making the cover seem natural for that matter) is difficult to begin with. A cover based system in a more open world would be a nightmare. ME:A will probably play closer to ME3MP (I barely remember using cover in it but then again, I played vanguard), so a greater emphasis on movement to avoid death rather than hunkering down.
Also I want to be able to kill everyone this time, kids must not be exception especially kids.....ooops sh*t wrong game lol
I kind of liked that in ME3 Shepard and some of the crew had different clothing that they wore off duty on the Citadel, and weren't fully loaded up with weapons and armor.
I wouldn't mind something like the beginning of the Citadel DLC however, where Shepard gets attacked in a restaurant.
Cover?
Play as a soldier and bulldoze your way through the games.
Finding a thread in the ME:A section with a useful, constructive criticism/suggestion still leaves me a little stunned whenever it happens.
