Get guard building abilities as soon as possible. The blocking ability is great for a start, just don't forget to use it. The more aggro you get the more guard you build which means your health might never get touched.

Hey, I'm starting a new run with sword and board, but it is gonna be my first run on hard....I tried once ages ago and got destroyed by the pride demon so I'm looking for tips
What, you mean the first pride demon you encounter at the Temple in Haven? Have Cassandra focus on it while you focus on disrupting the rift. You're not actually supposed to focus on beating up the demon; disrupting the rift is the main purpose of that fight. If you have Cassandra run over to it first, the demon should focus on her, with Leliana next if Cassandra goes down (unless you get unlucky).

I find my best tactic is to run around in circles around the stone outcropping to avoid the small demons and the pride demon's electricity attacks while trying to disrupt the rift as often as possible. I also try to wake up any companions who are unconscious to get the focus off my inquisitor. Is this a sexy way to do it? Nope. Does it work? Yep. I've no shame.

Slap it on Casual and you will be fine. Like others have said, you have to disrupt the rift for the the Pride Demon's guard to be destroyed. Other demons will appear too, and you will need to kill them to have time to disrupt or else they're going to hit you. Watch out for the pride demon's Smash attack since that can bring your health down by a lot. Just remember to block. You gain guard by blocking, but you also lose stamina when successfully blocking attacks.
