Not being able to upgrade to GOTY edition seems like poor service to me.

How is it risky? If the disc's busted, you tell the guy who sold it to you that you'll nuke his eBay rating unless he gives you a refund. This has never failed in my experience, though that's from other types of product since I've never got a bad used disc yet.

Why do people buy used games then ?
And why wouldn't you use the price of the used PC version?

Anyway, this would be absurd as the price of the used game is defined by the current market prices. And since you currently can't find an upgrade option, sellers have to lower their prices since the Goty might be more attractive.

What?
You don't set prices depending on the price of used games, which publishers try to kill anyway. There's no second-hand market on PC for example. Also, when you buy a used game, you expect it to be cheaper than a new one, because it's more risky to do so.

EA is competing against the "used" market as well.  It would be counterintuitive for EA/Bioware to offer a DLC upgrade so cheap to encourage buying a used next gen game & the upgrade instead of buying GotY.

Why do people buy used games then ?

Presumably because the used copies are cheaper. And they're cheaper because supply and demand has worked in the usual way, and the people who thought the game was worth $60 or even $40 now own it, so the market only includes people who think it's worth $20 or $5 or whatever.

Well, in the case of DAI, I'm not sure there are going to be any used copies. Aren't they all tied to your Origin ID? I haven't seen anyone try to transfer his account. (Is that a TOS violation?)

Edit: or is that just a PC thing? I don't really follow how stuff works on consoles.

Plenty of used copies of PS4 and Xbone on Amazon ... none for used PC on Amazon

Same here. I only play on PC, and you can't find used copies, since it's indeed tied to your Origin account.

Still. A difference of $4, which would tend to disappear if an upgrade option was available, is not much considering there's not an unlimited supply of used games...

Interesting. Looks like the used console price for DAI is something in the $20-25 range. That's a little below the price of new PC discs. DAI DD is currently $40 on Origin for the standard edition, which is pretty silly since it will just drive people to Wal-Mart or wherever.

Interesting choice for a new buyer. $25 for the SE or $60 for the GOTY -- I'm thinking maybe the GOTY's overpriced.

As I said, they've got the SE on sale for 20 right now Xbox games for Gold and the DE for 22.50.

As for used PC games. It's illegal here in Illinois nowadays. I think they tried to do the same for console, but I'm unsure why it failed.

If the GotY is overpriced, the undiscounted list price of DLC a la carte is ???

That relies on the opinion of the purchaser.

I was unclear there. I meant overpriced for EA's purposes. $35 or so for all the DLCs doesn't strike me as being enough of a deal to keep someone who's price-sensitive from buying just a used standard edition and skipping the DLCs. That doesn't earn EA anything. It works better for PC players, but I don't think any PC player will actually buy the DAI SE at $40, unless he's too stupid to wait for a sale. Have to wait and see what sale prices for the different editions look like. (Individual purchasers, as Elhanan says, must make their own determinations as to what's overpriced for themselves.)

As for undiscounted DLCs, that depends on what EA wants to accomplish with DLC pricing. The current strategy trades off short-term revenue for long-term revenue.

A lot of states, including Illinois (my home)made resale of software illegal in order to crack down on piracy, or some such, but it's been like that here since I'd say 2003. Which is probably why you won't find used PC.

What kind of human don't let their customers upgrade their game version to GOTY edition? Please, let me. I just want to have a complete version, and don't have to buy another fuc... copy that i don't need.

RESPECT YOUR IDIOTS CUSTOMER WHO TRUSTED; UNFORTUNATLY,ON YOU

This isn't about trust, this is about consumers taking responsibility and paying attention.

You CAN have a complete version without buying another copy of the game. In fact you DO. DLC is extra content. DLC is a separate product. DLC can be purchased or not as you chose. When you bought your copy of DAI, you purchased the base game, with no guarantee that future DLC would be provided to you for free.

As a consumer, you have final responsibility for your purchases not EA.

Sorry for reviving a month old topic, however, I'd just like point out, having just decided I might take a look at Inquisition's DLCs, the fact buying all the DLCs alone would actually cost MORE than just getting GOTY edition is pretty ridiculous. There's literally no reason not to just buy GOTY ontop of  the digital deluxe I already own when it literally cost more to buy the DLCs themselves.

Yes it sucks.

However, DLC and GOTY on PC was 1/3 off on Origin last week through Cyber Monday.  GOTY on PC was $35 on BestBuy.com before that. Unfortunately prices seem to have gone back up to "normal".

I hope you are not holding your breath waiting for a DLC upgrade or for another DLC sale, as EA enjoys selling DLC at list price.

Ah, oh well, it probably just mean I won't be playing the DLC ever. There're plenty other games I can better spend my money on at this point anyway. While I'd have been more than happy to spend 40 dollars on the DLCs, 20 hours worth of contents is no where near justifiable for me to buy the GOTY again at this point.

Sorry for getting a bit off topic here now, but I'd like to thank you all for the information re: how Origin works, for which I have searched the forums on and off, and I just stumbled upon this thread (as I've just purchased the Trespasser DLC ...well, for PS4 that is)

I've been lucky enough to get a hold of DA:O Origins Ultimate (in Sweden) both for me and my brother, just resently, though it required a couple of days of searching both Google and Yahoo, I finally managed - stumbling upon a sudden sale on a very well respected gaming site. I refused to give up, and I got rewarded -- yay -- but since I've only played those games (ME and DA) on the Xbox 360, PS3 and now PS4 (lucky me, I'd say, speaking of DLCs -- I do not believe I would have been so happy if I only had the PS3 version :pinched: ) I didn't know how Origin worked, since this disc will require me to get online and I've not installed Windows yet ....I'm on a Mac.

Anyway thank you all so much. I have read the entire thread, and I can see where you are coming from, but I want you all to know that you've actually been great (to me) in the midst of things. You've helped me a lot! :D

And I also just recently bought (on disc as well) Skyrim Legenderay Edition for $24 (estimated, as of today), so there is still hope if you'd ever change your mind, AlanC9.

Pallando, don't give up! One day DAO Ultimate will be there for you, just as it was for me. It's so great, I can't wait to play it with mods.
I do not get online much, but if I do stumble upon it, I will let you know, for sure.

Oh yes yes, and in my try to help Pallando, I just bumped into this, if anyone's interested. (speaking of EA...I'm kind of laughing at myself now, as I can't help feeling a bit 'sarcastic', I guess the word is, against EA)

Jade Empire for free right now:
https://www.origin.c...es/on-the-house
(the link is the Swedish English version, but Origin will redirect you)

edit: sp and too many smilies...

If you want GOTY risk the wait and buy it when it comes out.

What a game and/or dlc is worth depends on the individual.  Since I play hundreds of hours with most Bioware SP games it is worth day one buy including dlc.

Want it all free wait a year or ten and it might appear on Origin like Jade Empire.  DAO even has past for free on Origin allready a very long while ago just before DAI release if I remember correctly.

Wanting a refund a year later?  Next people want GOTY few months after prime release and of course with all dlc included not even accesable for day one buyers since its still in the making.  Then there are also sales where DAI sold for less resently.

Based on personal observation, PC players tend to have far more opportunities to get DLC discounted than do console players. I do not believe there has been any comparable PSN discount, though I kept looking for one.

These two posts are both me. The pricing model discentivizes bothering at all (and EA's insistence at maintaining its DLC prices is the main reason I still haven't bought Mass Effect). When DAI:DE drops down to a reasonable price, I will possibly pick it up (if I haven't already moved on to other things and uninstalled the game to make room on my HDD).

And when that GOTY is $20, buying the DLC itself will still cost nearly triple that. No one will ever convince me that that's a good business model.

And the hilarious thing is all the DLC combined STILL cost more than the GOTY edition since that also got 25% off. Not that I'm complaining mind you, it's just that their pricing model make no sense.
