It's not really any more selfish than any other request. Your point about repopulating and utilitarian concerns is valid, but that will be secondary to writing characters. As long as we get a good character, not a sexuality shoved into a body on the screen, I really don't care. What I don't like is pandering.
Select people for colonizing another galaxy judging by their health, ability and will to reproduce? What a fascism.
Bioware is known for their social realism. If best farmer in the galaxy is gay, then so be it. Sane person would never replace him with some other farmer for some illusory reproduction gains.
Yes, those would be valid concerns for an actual colonization effort. That has nothing to do with fascism. However, you are also correct that they aren't the sole concerns and expertise would certainly be one.
BioWare puts them in there because it makes them money, garnishes them positive attention, in a world where people can be killed for being gay a video game is kind of a nice safe outlet and some people appreciate it, it will sell extra copies of the game that may not be sold otherwise.
Gay romance isn't hurting you. You don't want to play it, don't. Are you afraid we'll see the unlock in your Keep FFS?
Is the game even allowed in places where people can be killed for being gay? I mean where it's allowed. Anyone can be killed for anything anywhere because there are always assholes and crazy people.
Anyway, it hurts me when we get "the gay guy" rather than "the guy who is gay." The former is pandering, where the latter is an actual character that can add to the story and world.
