Seriously though..
considering this thread's provenance, treating it seriously is infinitely more charitable than it deserves
Let me give you brief version of Japanese history regarding that(homosexuality and repopulation):
All warlords in Japanese history(sengoku period especially) happened to have been bi or at least had experience with another guy once in their life, so it was hard to tell which warlord never shaged another man in his life(except Hideyoshi Toyotomi that was confirmed as someone who didn't), but other warlords that were big names in history like lord Oda Nobunaga, Date Masamune, Ieyasu Tokugawa, Kenshin Uesugi, Takeda Shingen had that "experience". You could say this was something like eh, "common" practice among warlords to be this "friendly" with their servants.(in samurais and ninjas case this "experience" was must... and I swear I can hear tears of 5 year old Naruto fan in mother's basement cry after finding out this info about real life ninjas).
Hmmm,forgot to comment about this.
Shhh....don't tell that!Naruto fans are going to drown world with their tears once they find out about what real life ninjas used to do xD
(to be honest this makes me wanting to copy this and paste to every Naruto forum for lolz at their reactions)

It's hard to treat anything in this section of the forum seriously. But I like to roleplay. ![]()
If this forum is any indication, being homosexual is an entirely unselfish thing. I'd be doing the galaxy a favour.
Seriously though.. why does the protagonist have to breed?
Leave that up to the people who aren't soldiers and hired mercenaries and are actually (realistically) able to breed. As most people are straight, it won't matter anyway. The human population will flourish because people like to f*ck like jack rabbits.
Well, if the colonists are seriously concerned about not breeding enough in the natural way, banning contraceptives would rather adress the issue than screening for gay people.
Are you going to force straight people to have children if they don't want to? Are you going to ban gay people from using technological means to have children? If the answer to those questions is no, then gay people being on the ark is fine.
Even if the premise of this thread were true, there are many ways to contribute to a society. Relatively few of them involve having children.
I, for one, welcome our new feminist overlords.
There'll be a lab and there'll be tubes and bottles. Welcome to the brave New World. We don't need romance to make a critical mission succeed.
I really can't understand all this nonsense about reproduction to (try) to justify not wanting homosexual romances. Is not like BioWare ever let us have characters with a family, at least if the protagonist is female (
male protag had at least two chances that I know of, Morrigan and a character in BG2, plus some the BG2 epilogues).
Why should, expecially our characters/companions, have to be some kind of Adam and Eve? or any of the colonists at all? there need to be only a relatively small precentage of donators (so not even requiring couples to do it like rabbits) to secure the stability of the numbers of the population. Oh, and "surprise!" those donators can be homosexual too!!!
Maybe, the problem may be the exact inverse: not having the population grow too much if resources are scarce.
And after all, we really don't know yet what the situation of our character is. Maybe the colonists have already created a community and don't even have to think about numbers at all. Or there are so many colonists numbers don't even count.
Whatever the situations, our characters and companions have work to do, nothing even remotely regarding increasing the numbers of the colony. Is something that others people will do in the background. If it is even needed at all.
Ah, and I'm someone who would love one epilogue or conversation with the romance where it can be open the chance to form a family post game. Just like Garrus and the adoption dialogue pre-final mission. (of course destroyed completely by the worse ending ever
) but I find these things quite stupid.
Gay or straight, I wouldn't want to have kids anyway. I'm in for the (very possibly dangerous) space exploration and adventure, not maternity leave. I'd think that whether I'm qualified or not would be more important than whether I'm straight or prepared to breed. To be honest, I give exactly zero damns about having babies. Especially in video games. Let's leave that to people that actually care about that sort of stuff, like, you know, the non-combatants that want to settle down. And how would we even do anything if everybody was forced to have kids? It's not like you can land on an unknown planet and immediately start an orgy to get everybody pregnant. (Akuze says hi.) Although I admit that might be an interesting thing to see. (And if that was a thing, it would just be one more reason to go for a gay romance.)
Although I don't suppose this thread is actually serious. But it did make me realise that having kids in games makes me go, "Hell, nah." I also think it turned me a little gayer. So thanks for that!
It makes them different. They are known for it. People buy their product because of it.
According to statistics gay people make up about 1.7% of the population, with another 1.8% identifying as bisexual. That's a very small, albeit outspoken, minority to actively pander to.
Personally, I don't really care as long as they don't try to shove some progressive agenda in my face. And I don't think the importance people here place on romances is representative for the entire player base. If you're trying to make a good game, then perhaps paying too much attention to the feedback of people who have in-depth discussions about Tali's sweat might not be the best idea.

Fast makeloses Englisch. Bravo.

Just out of curiosity do you see pandering as being better/more acceptable if it's done for a more mainstream population?

It makes more sense to pander to the majority of your player base, rather than a small minority.

Companies pander to different demographics. CDPR panders to a different demographic than does BW. It isn't about better or worse. BW is the only AAA company that panders to extreme progressivism/SJWs. Nothing wrong with that as a business strategy.

Is that a yes?
Is that a yes?
The only thing that makes sense is what makes money. Most games "pander" (kind of a stupid word) to more conventional needs. BW was smart to pander to the people they do because no other company does.
Let's not make any romances. Problem solved. Why nobody wants to listen?
Oooops double post. Sorry.
Here's the problem with statements like this... there are tens of thousands of threads about BioWares gay romances. I always play lesbian options b/c I'm a lesbian. I have no idea how many people romance Sera in DA:I but many more than are lesbians that play the game.
People love to role play.
People love pretend.
People love to have options.
People play them and use them and whine if they aren't there.
BioWare puts them in there because it makes them money, garnishes them positive attention, in a world where people can be killed for being gay a video game is kind of a nice safe outlet and some people appreciate it, it will sell extra copies of the game that may not be sold otherwise.
I bought every BioWare game after I played KOTOR after on my iPad because of a brilliant piece of writing and a plot twist. The fact that they are the only game in town that does a game romance RPG insures my money.
Why would they give that up?
They are they ONLY game in town that does it.
They ALWAYS do it.
They ALWAYS (at least try) do it well.
What incentive do they have not to do it?
It makes them different. They are known for it. People buy their product because of it.
Aside from that they make amazing video games DA and ME are amazing series that look fantastic on the frostbite engine.
The homosexual thing, is a side benefit for some of us. It matter not a whit to many. It matters enough that they will keep it. It doesn't hurt BioWare. There's isn't a "Mom's Against Raging Gay Quanri". WTF?!?
Seriously. It's the same dead horse. Why do you people keep beating it?
Gay romance isn't hurting you. You don't want to play it, don't. Are you afraid we'll see the unlock in your Keep FFS?
In an universe where cloning a human being can be done (the Shepard clone in ME3: Citadel) and an all female alien race can mate with anyone, why is sexuality a big deal. If a lesbian and/or gay colonist wants to marry and have a child there are plenty of ways that they can have a child: adoption, sergeant mothers, and artificial insemination all of which are used today. Add in medical advances that we know already exist in the Mass Effect Universe and LGBT couples would have no more trouble than some hetrosexual couples when comes to having children.
So it's a big non-issue in this Universe.
Players who don't want LGBT characters and romances in BioWare games need to get over it or better yet stop playing BioWare games and coming here and complaing about it. A lot of fans want it, BioWare wants to do it and they knows it gets them some good PR (and considering that BioWare is a subsidiary of EA which needs all the good PR they can get) it makes their games stand out and if you don't want to romance a LGBT character here is a helpful hint for you: YOU DON'T HAVE TO ROMANCE THEM! It's not that damn hard to do.
It makes more sense to pander to the majority of your player base, rather than a small minority.
Why arent they doing it then?
Maybe because the progressive ideas arent only pandering to gays and bis but also to normal straight people who dont live in the past and support freedom instead of trying to repress everything deviant and force everyone into predetermined roles that fit their limited wold views in their heads.
So yes, they are pandering, to the majority.

But this game is about space and all. I don't need all these "progressive ideas". I have really enough of them everywhere else.

It's set in the future. Current "progressive" ideas will likely be the norm.

The game presupposes a future in which we've progressed. It's not that shocking.

That is a good point, but considering humans are slow creatures when it comes to change i highly doubt they would be able to handle all the progress.
Imagine people from 100 years ago suddenly time traveling here, most of them would go crazy.
