Well being blind is a pretty severe disability. As you said, the Fade could make a blind mage pretty interesting. Especially if they worked with a Spirit or Demon to get some sort of "sight" in the world around them, maybe like how the world is seen when someone wears The One Ring from LotR. I am all for something like this that adds to the character and uses the world. I am not in favor of "I have this condition IRL so I want a character that has it."

Yep, I agree. The "blind" device would be interesting if they could work it that they had some sort of second-sight. This is especially crucial for a follower who would be expected to fight in combat.

Now, I'm sure some will remember the mostly-blind templar, Ser Otto from DAO who still was able to participate in combat. From the DAwiki: "Upon meeting the Grey Warden's party, he comments that he has 'sight enough to see' them, possibly implying that he can still perceive people and objects within his immediate vicinity to some degree. This would explain his ability to navigate the exterior of the Alienage, and later inside the Orphanage at the heart of the mysterious activity," with the addendum that, "He makes up for his lack of sight with his unique ability to sense evil or impurity."

So, in DAO Ser Otto was not completely blind in addition to having a sort of second-sight that he was able to use and still be effective in combat. But I don't know if this would fall under goofyomnivore's interest in a bind mage character since the person would not really be disabled, but only experience the world differently. Geordi from Star Trek: The Next Generation is blind, but he "sees" with his ocular device.

Yeah I think it would be cool from a lore/world perspective. That's my main reasoning, and not just to make him/her blind to just be blind. I was thinking blind from birth, so they have no concepts of what objects look like compared to a person who went blind later in life. Since the fade projects your fears/wants mostly visually from what we've seen to manipulate people. Spiders, taking someone's appearance, etc. It would be interesting to hear how a demon attack someone where those tactics are probably not present.

She/he would be a much different character probably not as extreme as Cole, but they would have a unique experience compared to every other mage we've met. They could have symbiotic spirit relationship like you mentioned (Wynne but on steroids), or something more sinister like blood magic and 'getting in peoples heads' to see.

Maybe they don't use anything at all to 'see' and their experience is completely unique. Fear is crushing lonliness and a sensation from a childhood memory(parent yelling at them or being left in the rain for example). I dunno I think its just a cool unexplored concept. I assume there are some out there, but the few are probably killed off or made tranquil immediately.

Oh, I was making the comparison between your post and others, not accusing you of having that mindset.

While having them totally blind, without the "second sight" ideas we've discussed, could be interesting for the character, how would you manifest that properly during gameplay? Or maybe you're thinking more of an adviser type more than a party member?

It IS interesting. But when you suggest an idea like this it needs to be taken a step further and considered as a game element as well. If that person is a follower how would they perform in combat?

Game elements aside, I do wonder what would have happened to such a person were they discovered to be a mage, and I suppose it depends on how the person was raised. Helen Keller was basically like a little animal when her teacher first met her at seven-years-old. The youngest I've heard of a mage manifesting their powers was seven (Minaeve, DAI). Imagine that kind of uncontrollable power in the hands of a feral child who can't be reasoned with. But of course this doesn't apply to ALL children who are born with such disabilities, or who acquire them (as Helen Keller) in infancy. So you could certainly have a mage who has been blind from birth, and has been raised so that they are fully functional and able to be educated when their powers manifest.

The character in my head I thought of when I popped into this thread was a young 18-21 female Tevinter mage from a proud and established noble family. The wealth/connections could have curbed/trained her to deal with her blindness best she could. Blindness would not only be a personal hurdle, but a status one as well with how Tevinter desires its ideal and perfect bloodlines. I mostly tunnel visioned on the fade aspect, but you're right I'd love to see the personal and societal impacts of his/her disability too.

I think someone from Minaeve's situation would be very interesting. Although I find it unlikely a blind mage surviving their teens without death, tranquility, or becoming an abomination due to how the rest of Thedas treats mages.

Combat I have no idea how it would work. Maybe a symbiotic relationship with a spirit/demon where one is the brain and one is the brawn, blood magic and 'stealing' someone's vision, or maybe echolocation through magic?

What about Merill?

She's a blood Mage that allows you to kill her clan, so no.... Someone with brains.

I would like to romance a male elf who has relatively little baggage. That's all.

But that might be too much to ask for, considering the pattern these games seem to have made so far...

We haven't had a male Dalish elf LI right? All of them so far have been completely enstranged from the Dalish and/or elvish culture in general (Solas doesn't count, his origins aren't Dalish as we know them. Anddd he's casually Fenharel)

Would be nice to have one. Maybe rogue/warrior since we've already had a mage Dalish (a blood magic using Keeper's apprentice no less). We've also had our fair share of elven glory from Merrill & Solas, shemlen hating from Solas and that girl from Awakening (Velanna sp?) and elf hating lol (Sera) and borderline elf apathy (Fenris, Zevran). So how about a normal non-extremist bow slinging or sword & shield wielding Dalish elf man?

^ more of a companion suggestion technically, but why not make him romanceable

sounds more like the kind of character I usually like PLAY but wth not?? I'd romance the hell out of him :) A 20s or 30s something hunter... loyal to his people, but not utterly close-minded. An archer because I think elven archers are just the best.

If we have a female elf romance - didn't include on on my list but I'm not opposed to it - then I would prefer it if she wasn't a woman-child for a change.

Interesting thread :) ! I seconded all of it ;) ! I kinda want someone really won't hesitate about what they want, would flirt relentlessly! In all my DAI playthroughs, I almost felt like I constantly have to beg. I just....I don't know, I guess I miss Zevran.......He did have crisis of relationship but it really felt like his character, almost endearing, and it was only for like 5 mins :P . I heard Fenris broke up with you for 3 years, and so far Solas seems like broke up with you like indefinitely. Does BW have some problem with the idea of elven boyfriend? Okay, I want next elven boyfriend to not broke up with my da4 protagonist. If he had to go all elven glory-Fenharel elathadra-kinda thing, I hope at least he would be honest about it from the beginning.

I'd be all over a female elf warrior romance, with the elf body type I prefer sword and shield but 2 hand is sexy as well. Not sure if I would want her to be Dalish or City.

I wouldn't care, just so long as she's an adult. Merrill exists in her own little world, and Sera hit twelve and just stopped.

An antagonist, maybe a sneaky assassin who you chase throughout part of the game and, once you get hold of him

and understand his motives, join forces with.

Would not mind this, especially if she were the aggressor/Dominant party of the relationship (Not an Iron Bull relationship though).

I've always wondered, what if Morrigan has a bro? If Solas has such dude as a high ranked commander and he is a romanceable villain... I think they would kill many birds on one shot.

Ideally, a mage character with absolutely no ulterior motives that can lead them to betray me at some point.

Thus far I've had Morrigan seduce me to become her magical baby daddy, Merrill betray me to a demon in the Fade or potentially if I sided with the Templars, Anders use me to help him blow up a Chantry and Solas help me save the world so he can later destroy it... and even the non-LI mages aren't completely exempt from this, since Velanna can turn on me if I kill the Architect!

Can I go a single game without having to utter the phrase, "Curse your sudden, but inevitable betrayal!"

(Seriously, we don't need to give the anti-mage crowd more ammunition)

Composition would probably:

- An a**hole. Really2 a self serving super a**. He could be charismatic, charming and romantic. But only cares for his view on the world and easily brushes everyone else's opinion aside. And don't expect him to change for the sake of twu wuv. Sure he loves you, but take note that he will always love himself more above all else including that special snow flake (pc). Push comes to shove, he will betray you, then appologize, set up a romantic evening and then.. fall into the same 'mistake' again. Repeat and rinse. He surely regrets his actions, but just cant find it within himself to change for the sake of other people, even if it is someone he claims to love. You can break up the relationship at any given point in the game, but he'd still try to win you over.. but he still can't be 'redeemable' because he's just too selfish for that (Sorry, this is talking from the deep dark corners of personal experience here :D) I see a lot of demands for a CE romance and those who feel attracted to that 'bad boy' vibe (and that's totally legit) but do becareful of what you ask for. And I supposed it's better to have a virtual jackass to irl ones, LoL.

- A nice guy. Like, for real. A solid guy who you could depend on and he could depend on you too. Even the normal everyday life could be stressful and I'd appreciate it if I don't have to play the 'Nanny' part 24/7. It's normal for everyone to break down sometimes and if he needs a shoulder to cry on the I'd be happy to lend mine, as long as I could do the same too ^^v He maybe hot tempered in the outside, humorous to friends and aggressive to foes, but he's always kind to family. And when problems arise he would just 'man up' and do things without complain. Heck, you can even let him solve problems for you/together, with your consent of course (Most likely I would stick to this kind of LI, since my husband falls into this category. Heh, y'know.. the 'self insert' RPGer and all that ^^v)

- The rest, well.. a mix and varrying degrees between those two polar examples, I suppose. What ever their race/point of origin or character class (mage/mundane) .. I totally leave it up to the Devs.

Sorry for very looooooong wall of text

Exactly the other way around with the guys. Blackwall was the first LI with dark hair. Before that? Blondies everywhere. And Fenris / Solas.

(Yes, I am saying I want a dark haired male straight or bi LI. And sadly, Blackwall is not my cup of tea.)

Fenris' hair was naturally dark.  He still has dark eyebrows.

A male blood mage (we almost had one in DAO) who has a good heart, uses blood magic correctly and is a rare mage romance that doesn't go south at the end.

So... Jowan after making some good life choices?

In addition to the 'less unstable mages' I'd like a 'pro-elven elf'.  So far we've had Zev and Fenris ('former crow' and 'former slave' are more important to their characters than 'elf') Merrill and Velanna (between them manage to have every terrible elven trope - 'lalalalaaaa flowers and trees' and 'GRRRR KILL THE SHEMS')* and Sera and Solas (the 'I'm not like other elves' duo).  Just once I'd like to see an elf who actually likes being elven, preferably a City Elf but I'm also happy with a Dalish.

*I should point out - I love both these characters.  But I do get annoyed with the writing sometimes.

As for what I'd like to see:

Lace Harding.

Pretty much every romance has some sort of emotional issue or personality defect; its part of the Bioware formula - Character has deep seated personal issues, player character comes along and helps resolve issues, mushy romance ensues.

I would like to buy a slave from a Tevinter slave market, make them my love interest, then decide whether to free them or ...not.
