It would certainly be an interesting departure. I can't recall that many female main villains/antagonists in any medium, nevermind video games. Sofia Lamb from Bioshock 2 is one of few in any game I've played.

I am not asking this in a smart-alecky "you idiots don't you see how dumb it is to have a sentient antagonist" way, but...perhaps there doesn't need to be an antagonist who is a single person. It could be man vs. nature story, for example. I am just throwing it out there as a thought. It would certainly be a different way of doing an rpgstory line as far as I know.

Hard to think of any antagonists best suited to female apart from obvious ones like the alien queen mother from the movies.

Back in the 1960s the original series of star trek ended it's third season wit ha female antagonist, but this is on the basis of certain jobs being forbidden to women, and I don't see any developer, least of all Bioware doing a story like that in this era.

It would certainly be an interesting departure. I can't recall that many female main villains/antagonists in any medium, nevermind video games. Sofia Lamb from Bioshock 2 is one of few in any game I've played.

Antagonists from FF franchise though I will flash out Jenova mostly out of them all.

Maleficent, your classical badass female bad girl.

Antagonists from DC and Marvel like Faora, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, Mystique and etc. lots of them.

Sophia Leigh,Amanda,Jacqueline Natla from Tomb Raider, Queen Himiko from New Tomb Raider.

Alma Wade F.E.A.R.

Carmilla from Castlevenia.

Juri from SF.

Women from MK.

Jeanne from Bayonetta.

Lucrezia Borgia from AC:Brootherhood.

Sarah Kerrigan who I freaking love and etc. lots of other female antagonists that were pure badass that I could easly add to this list.

As I said it is not about gender but how you write character and BW is more then capable then writing interesting characters with amazing stories, though as I said it would be nice if this time they made antagonist that is going to be female for change, it is not must(as long as antagonist is good enough for me and everyone to take them seriously and not as bad joke) but it would be nice if it were.

I think it'd be pretty awesome, though I wouldn't say no if she wasn't completely evil.

Sorta like Flint and the Baroness relationship in IDW's G.I Joe Disavowed series. They're on different sides, have a grudging respect for each other and seem to get stuck in situations where they have to work together, much to their respective partner's chagrin.

....on the side note it'd be amazing if there was a team-up with the antagonist.

Why does everyone always forget Meredith? By the end of DA2, she might have been the single most powerful normal human combatant in any Bioware game ever. She's also raving mad, and wears shining armor.

Will Tumblr get mad that we try to kill her?

As for this, the number of female characters who have been killable antagonists in Bioware games are innumerable. It's a thoroughly unremarkable occurrence, and it's baffling that there are still people who could actually believe it could be capable of causing controversy.

Still thanks to act 3 she was more joke then serious villain plus in DA:I Varric gives you story of how now kids play 'Who dares to poke Meridith with stick' which makes me unable to take her as serious villain even more.

I'd enjoy that. If they did/do I hope they do it properly and don't make it a cop-out by making her sympathetic or brainwashed or not truly bad etc. I'd like to see a cold-blooded, nasty, calculated female villain. They're too rare in videogames (well, pretty much all media actually.) Bioware loves redeeming their villains though, or at least making them sympathetic, so I doubt it'll happen unless it's a minor character/sub boss type thing.

Shodan is my favourite (though I guess technically you could argue that she was not a woman).

Yeah, Meredith for example had potential of being amazing villain yet in act 3 they messed her up completely and with DA:I they made ultimate joke out of her.

Flemeth as I said in my post could have been most amazing antagonist instead of Coryfish that people who never bought 'Legacy DLC' never heard of and that people who did bought Legacy never cared much for(though his battle in DA2 Legacy was amazing.......in DA:I it was plain joke -_-).

Morrigan is another BW character that has potential of being amazing antagonist, I doubt she will go "mwahahahahaha" on us though we shall see.

When it comes to ME however I always thought that Liara will be some sort of antagonist in ME3(especially after playing 'Shadow Broker DLC' ....however this was another opportunity that was missed. And I hate how they made Cerberus automatically the bad guys instead of leaving them in 'grey' like in ME2 for players to wonder are they bad guys or not.

But yeah I as well want some true badass evil cold-blooded female villain that fights for what she believes(even though it is wrong) to the end because she truly believes in what she is fighting for not because she went insane over some statue(Meredith),was brainwashed and became evil against her will(Benezia) or is trying to redeem herself.

You missed the important part of that banter. The game is, "Who's brave enough to poke Meredith with a stick," and Varric follows up with the punchline, paraphrased "No one is brave enough." Even as a statue, everyone is way too terrified of her to even get close.

I don't know what combat sequence you played through, but that woman's eyes were glowing red while she shouted religious dogma at you, and brought giant statues to life. All this right after she massacred a bunch of people. This is a little more on side of looming fiery death than most jokes I've heard.

Whatever the gender, don't ruin a villain with a lazy indocrination/possession plot.

Vasir was a great villain, because she was driven purely by her personal motives. Saren, TIM, Benezia and the like all ended up as pawns, spouting the same nonsense.

Sidestepping the debate about exactly how long feminism as a movement has been in full swing, because I definitely clock it at way, way, way older than you do, there's something really important that you should know:

There are these really mean people who lurk online, sometimes called Trolls, and they say crap like that--while not actually meaning a word of it--with the intent of getting a rise out of gullible people. Unfortunately, you've been falling for it. But it's not too late to change that. Here's how you start. Any time anyone says something like that, that being born as a certain gender makes you evil or bad, assume they are probably trolling. Especially on a site like tumblr, which has an absolutely rampant troll population. Y'know like, pretty much every website.

An apparently huge amount of posters on the BSN have recently been duped by these trolls into thinking that they mean their rants legitimately, and it's time for us to make an end to it. We have the power to stand up and say that the BSN will no longer be duped by trolls!

Or don't. This many people falling for it certainly makes for an interesting social experiment.

I disagree with Meredith, I think she was good villain all way through. Red lyrium simply fueled her paranoia, even without it she had iron fist when treating mages and even templars. She also had probably most epic boss fight in BW games I have played this far.

They need to look at Saren, Loghain and the Arishok as their successes and the rest of their recent antagonists as failures.

It's funny that you complain about poorly written antagonists...and then cite as your counterexamples three antagonists who weren't particularly well written, but whose voice actors were able to sound Deep and Menacing so many fans have given them a 'pass'.

I will have to disagree in Loghain's case at least, because let's be honest while killing Archdemon was necessary it was more of a choir in order to stop blight, stopping Loghain in another hand was more personal matter.

Oh I'm well aware. I do my fair share of lurking and Trolling when the mood strikes. I have fake accounts to experiment with. I'll pose as an extremist on both sides of the spectrum commingling with each group, simply for the experimental aspect to see if they believe what they preach or are just doing it for the lols. The real reality is that I don't care either way. I don't pay attention to movements, as they aren't my concern. I care about me and my own personal dramas and avoid everyone else's problems.. But the fact is that there are one or two crazies out there who actually believe that crap, and the fact they have followers, is discouraging to say the least.

But back on topic...I care not the gender of the antagonist. Write them well and make me want to hate them.

My criteria for the villain is as follows;

They need to be someone who represents both an intellectual and physical threat.

They need to be someone who's motivations are understandable and logical, but never the less run counter to ours to a degree that no one wants to join them.

If they have those qualities, I don't care what's between their legs.

an intellectual threat? as in, writing a mean review about the player character's latest monograph?

Wow. A troll, blindly falling for the antics of other trolls...Curiouser and curiouser. I wonder how much nonsense on the internet is caused by people saying what they don't mean to get a rise out of each other, always assuming they're the one winning at the game, when the other person is patting themselves on the back at the same time.

I completely disagree. You haven't even given reasons as to why they're poorly written. These are villains that are roundly heralded so you'll have to have more than "they're not well written" to make any sort of argument.

Yes, writing opinions is a bit like killing six million jews and starting a world war. I think comparing feminists to nazis is measured and reasonable.
