Pretty simple.  I've had decent use distracting and blocking with Decoy, but I don't know if I've ever seen it explode.  I didn't give it any health upgrades, but it just never seems to take enough damage.  Is there something I should be doing or is it not that common outside of specific situations?

It's because enemies are inaccurate when it comes to shooting down a decoy.

The only few things in the game that are capable of depleting it's shields are like geth rocket troopers, geth bombers, atlas explosion (I think) ravager sacks) and scion grenades and probably a few that I don't know of.

This is why I chose duration on decoy instead of durability.

If you take the level 6 exploding option, then yes it does explode.  If there is a primed enemy within range, this can set off a tech explosion additionally.

What difficulty are you on? Cause that does make a rather big difference.

Yes it does. Makes a weird noise when it happens. Sounds like a geth fart.

Does it work better on Gold?  I think I've only played Silver since I restarted the character.  Probably not going to be a central part of strategy, but would be nice to at least have it make use of that function.

Of note, Decoy has native 50% damage reduction, which makes it deceptively tanky.

Some enemies outright ignore it, while the ones who don't are subject to the normal AI priority list, meaning they won't instantly retarget to Decoy and may not even do so at all if there are better targets according to their formula.

Decoy works well across all difficulties.

I even put it through its paces on platinum, and I can confirm enemy inaccuracy is the reason why decoy's shields are barely taking any damage, because I killed everything else except the 2 geth primes and left my decoy there, and the 2 geth primes with their siege pulse attacks did not manage to kill the decoy, before it's duration was over.

I won't say duration is definitively better than durability for the decoy on rank 4, but depends if you want it to survive longer against everything, including geth rocket troopers and geth bombers, then pick durability otherwise if you want your decoy to survive overall, that's not a geth bomber or geth rocket trooper then pick duration.

I think it should work better on silver. Since enemies have less health.

Have you taken power damage passives? That will make a difference.

I find if I pick shields, shock, explode evolutions, then place in a doorway, even in an enemy ignores it and walks past, then it will shock the enemy and make them more likely to attack the decoy.

Marauders and hunters are both prime examples of falling for this. They ignore it and walk past, get shocked, elbow it, decoy explodes, tech burst. Mwahaha

But does it suffer out of cover damage penalties.

Ha ha that's brilliant. Funny and yet a good question.

You don't want decoy to explode prematurely. You want it to be long lasting. Because cooldown is pretty long. ... At least that's how I play my decoy.

^ I'm not. I always go maximum shield strength (for protection) and duration.

Especially on the Volus Merc (Salarian I usually stop of evo 5).

Two Salarians walk into a Tuchanka bar.

The engineer says, "Don't worry, I brought my decoy in case it gets rough."

The infiltrator smiles.  "So did I."

This joke would be longer except there are only two Salarian kits in the effing game.

Exactly. You want Decoy to keep going while you spam Energy Drain on her.

I'm pretty sure that unless it's an explosion (or projectile), guns go right through it.
