It is certainly hinted at by his comments. He knew about Tom Rainer the whole time. Post Fen'harel revelation dialogue with Cole would have been interesting or with any of the companions for that matter. Solas also seems to have the ability to stop Cole from reading his mind so that is another hint.

Of course he did. He always knew Solas was Solas. He may not be familiar with the tales of the Dread Wolf or what other people think about the Dread Wolf, but he met and knew who Solas as a person was. He may not know Solas' motivations or goals, but he was still able to see into who Solas was.

I'm sure if he knew that Solas planned to have a lot of people die, Cole probably would have said something, but Solas probably kept that part from Cole.

Cole: You don't need to envy me, Solas. You can find happiness in your own way.
Solas: I apologize for disturbing you, Cole. I am not a spirit, and sometimes it is hard to remember such simple truths.
Cole: They are not gone so long as you remember them.
Solas: I know.
Cole: But you could let them go.
Solas: I know that as well.
Cole: You didn't do it to be right. You did it to save them.
Inquisitor: Solas, what is Cole talking about?
Solas: A mistake. One of many made by a much younger elf who was certain he knew everything.
Cole: You weren't wrong, though.
Solas: Thank you, Cole.

He knew...

According to Patrick Weekes Cole knew what Solas was planning all along (it's why Solas erased/got Cole to erase part of Cole's memories because he didn't want his friend following him to try and stop him).

Cole would try to stop him, no way he would allow Solas to cause so much pain and harm.

Death doesn't equate to "pain and harm" to Cole.  In fact, Cole thinks death is a possible cure to "pain and harm".  Especially if the Inquisitor doesn't say anything.

One could argue that Cole might assist Solas in his endeavors in an effort to relieve Solas' suffering...  And Solas doesn't want to take the chance that such assistance might corrupt Cole.

if Cole is a spirit then he returns to the Fade at the end of Trespasser to help remind Solas of who he really is.  Cole does try and tell us that 'he's not that kind of wolf.'

That is... worrying.  But based on Cole's dialogue, his insistence that we should look beyond Fen'Harel with Solas and his final act in Trespasser Cole is right there on the 'redeem Solas' train.

Which does raise the worrying possibility that, in a worldstate where the Inquisitor wants to stop Solas at any cost, you're going to have to fight Cole.

Hopefully you can avert this if you made him human.

Oooh I hope you can avert that by making him human. Human Cole can hopefully see Solas plan is madness. I don't care about stabbing spirit Cole. Spirit cole had omnious music in his second to last scene Inquisition pre epilogue anyway.

There was going to be an option to let Cole kill the Templar and then Corypheus would bind him because you led him back to the demon path I would assume, facing him to fight you at the end of the game. I can seem them returning to that idea. The actual dialogue where Cole says he killed the Templar to Blackwall is still in the files.

I know.  I'm both sorry and glad they dropped that.  It also does imply that the writers intend to use Cole in a later game, probably because he's Solas' best friend and would offer a different view of him than the 'this guy is 100% evil' NPCs.  I kind of hope they don't return to demon!Cole while also really hoping they do.  But I can't see Solas intentionally pushing Cole into becoming a demon.

Cole still cares for Solas when he's human, and he still has every insight into him that he had while he was more spirit.  I'm hoping that Cole can help Solas find himself again even if he's more human, but he'd have an easier time doing that as a spirit.

Oh he does but human Cole will then have ties to the rest of the world (Maryden, the rest, the fact that he too will might die)

And I'm really hoping Cole isn't reduced to Solas morality pet if he's human. I don't mind that for spirit Cole but human Cole really deserves better. Since only spirit Cole goes into the fade I'm hoping that's how it goes.

My fear is he won't be a demon Cole but a Cole that will fight you because he thinks it will help Solas.

Solas is so good at making the worst things happen when he's trying to make things the way HE wants them to be. I can see Solas destroying Cole with all his manipulations to make things "better".

It will be interesting to see how it plays out if Cole is human (my canon is Spirit, though).  As much as I love both Solas and Cole I agree with you: Cole shouldn't be reduced to just a morality pet.  Both characters deserve to have deeper characterisation than that.  But I do think Cole, whether spirit or human, is going to have a part to play in the confrontation of Solas.

We could have spirit Cole fight us and human Cole die because he helped us. That would be typical BW.

No, I'm sticking with my theory that in a game that is likely to be filled with a lot of people who hate Solas and want him dead (for pretty good reasons - they're not privy to everything we know) Cole is going to be a lead voice in the 'this guy is worth saving from himself' team.

There will be no happy ending with Solas, that is for sure.

If Weekes can make Cole have a happy ending, I'll be optimistic that something good will happen for Solas once all the pain, angst, drama and death is over.

Maybe.

But Weekes was the man who wanted to give Thane's romance a happy ending.

Whoever wrote Blackwall broke my heart again though, and just after Solas too. What a sad ending!
