Based on what little we know, the dark ritual was based off of a ritual that was done a long time ago. It's just that it was modified to get the Old God soul.

Now that we know the result (Kieran) I wonder exactly why people would do it? It's certainly one way to continue to "live on" but if Kieran is an indicator, that person who's reincarnated won't have the same personality and not necessarily memories.

I remember years ago it was years ago that this was how Ancient Elves got their immortality ... but that's not really the case.

Was it really just a way to keep the person's soul despite them not being the same in the end? Kinda like the Avvars belief of reincarnation?

I suspect it was a way for certain individuals with a failing body due to injury or disease to transfer their souls on to a new healthy body.

It appears to be a modification of the means by which Mythal's fragment is passed from witch to witch.

Perhaps the ritual was discovered by Flemeth long after she incorporated Mythal.

Perhaps she knew about the taint and how it works - my guess is that it is some kind of blood magic that lingers and echoes through the ages, like some spells performed by the Evanuris - and thus came up with the ritual as a means to purify it.

Solas tells our Inquisitor that demons are spirits who were forced to subvert their purpose.

Maybe by allowing a spirit to be reborn turns him back from a demonic figure to what he originally was. But because the soul within an Archdemon can't be purified by conventional means, it's necessary to perform the dark ritual.
