I'm a noob that's been having a lot of fun the last few weeks. I visit the boards often, and see people mentioning they hold onto certain items to ensure something better drops. Is there a list or something that I can reference to which items I need to hold on to?

I asked this question before, and I'm not sure I have the full answer, but here is what I've gathered.

Keeps items in your inventory matters in some situations:

  1. It affects your Hakkon drop rates off nightmare dragons only.  Your first Hakkon drop happens 15% of the time, and then decreases from there.  When you kill a nightmare dragon, the game checks your inventory first, and if it detects a weapon, will lower your drop rate the appropriate amount.  Deleting a Hakkon weapon will increase your drop rate up to the appropriate level.  So if you really, really want a specific hakkon weapon, you should probably try and get that weapon first, and if you don't get it, try and keep your drop rate at 15%.  It doesn't seem to be worth it after the first because your drop rate becomes so low.
  2. In order to get a purple dragon weapon from perilous or nightmare dragons, you must first have the blue version of the dragon weapon in your inventory.  Dragon weapons are easily recognized because they have the word "dragon" in the title.
  3. The same is true of the "descent weapons."  There drop off nightmare dragons only, and in order to get the purple version, you must have the blue version in your inventory.  These blue items are the only level 26 blue items in the game, so they are also easily recognizable.

Note, this applies to nightmare dragons only.  You have an opportunity to receive all of these weapons from chests and there is no check to your inventory first.

So keep all blue weapons that are level 26 or have the word "dragon" in the name.

Actually, you don't need the blue "Dragon" weapons to get the purple.  The blues drop in Threatening, and the purples drop in Perilous and above.  Descent weapons are the ones you need the blues first, and you can get both the blue version and the purple version from Perilous.

Edit:  The blue weapons you need to hold on to are as follows.

  • Revered Defender Longsword to get Valos Atredum
  • Revered Defender Maul to get Stone-Breaker
  • Lyrium-Infused Staff to get Isana's Song
  • Stone-Stalker Blade to get Silencer
  • Lyrium-Reinforced Bow to get Tezpadam's Bane
  • Revered Defender Shield to get Isatunoll

Do not salvage Hakkons

Hang on to accessories and (high lvl) weapons with interesting specs.

I could have sworn I read that the blue dragon weapons were prereqs for the purple. Nice to know that they are not.

And I wouldn't see the problem of salvaging your first hakkon.

RNG can be a fickle ******, but you should average around 6-7 matches to get your first again with a 15% drop rate.

Thank you so much for the clarification!  I have the Stone-stalker blade and the Lyrium-Infused Staff, both of which are two of my best weapons, the others being the Bow of Cruel Redemption and Yavanalis, which I prefer over the Lyrium Staff since i don't have many promotions and it helps survivability.  My dagger rogues destroy with the Stone Stalker blade and I have the Bleeder of Souls as my offhand.

My sword and board characters use Thunderstrike along with Stinking Cheater.  I'm not sure how good Stinking Cheater is but it has a very high iLevel over my next shield, Dirthamon's Wisdom.  My two-handers use Sundering, but I'm hoping for a better two hander soon.

All-in-all, I have some pretty descent weapons, and my armors are all drakescale or the best crafted for my favorite characters.  My accessories need help, but I did finally get a HoK ring, a Suberb.  Was very very happy I finally got a HoK ring, and super happy it was the suberb.  My belts freakin suck though and I'm using a common health belt on most of my characters.

So the Descent weapons are the only things that affect the droprate of other items?  This doesn't apply to accessories or other stuff?  Thank you for your help.

Well if you want the not-so-secret-anymore uber item, you need all hakkons, purple descent weapons, and all the lv. 27 weapons. Not sure about master stamina amulet or physical immunity amulet.

It was until patch 10 I think.  There was a post by Luke saying that blue is no longer needed for purple.   I got the purple Maul of the Dragon off store bought chests 3 times already.  Now if I could get the other ones....

I could have sworn I read that the blue dragon weapons were prereqs for the purple. Nice to know that they are not.

You DONT need the lvl 26 blues to get the purples in chests.  However, these purples may be loot level locked from the chests like the hakkons?  You DO need the blues to get the purples from the dragons.

This was never the case. I have only ever gotten two or three blue dragon weapons. I had about 50 purple dragon weapons (yes, I hoarded them) before I started salvaging them because I would get one in every chest.
