For the next game, I would love to see mages as crystal glass cannons again. The new concept for mages feels extremely boring and dull to me. Also, I don't understand why all the magic schools were simplified as primal spells...what happpended to Origins schools? Is there any reason for the simplification besides gameplay?

Please, rethink mages role for the next game.

Honestly, barring the Knight Enchanter, the new mages seem more like crystal cannons than the Origins ones - especially when you factor in Origins' Arcane Warriors, Shapeshifters and Battlemages.

They can still die just as easily if you are not prepared.

Glass cannons. The term is glass cannon.

What I'd like to see with mages next time is two distinct specializations, one like an arcane warrior that makes you more able to survive, and one that gives you far more damage but leaves you vulnerable.

Agreed. Not enough bubbly in Inquisition.

How am I supposed to announce my upcoming announcement as grand enchanter of rhyme without Cristal. What was even the point of entering the Thedas rap game if I can't drink overpriced champagne?

Super Disappointed.

Looking at you Laidlaw.

I'm actually stunned (and disappointed) that there was no Shapeshifter class in Inquisition.

The environments were rife with animal life! Near that one particular camp-site in the Hinterlands (you know the one), I couldn't walk ten paces without being attacked by a bear, then another bear, and then the extended families of both of those bears simultaneously.

Surely it would have been easier than ever, technically speaking, to allow a mage player to transform into, say --  a bear ... or a giant spider, or a swam of bees ... or a giant nugalope. lol

Yes, although in some languages (and older English) the words "glass" and "crystal" are practically synonymous. Perhaps English isn't their first language?

Anyway, I fully support mages getting more of their old spells back, as well as more crowd-control and pure damage spells.

When were mages glass/crystal/aluminum/obsidian/clay/ice cannons? It always seemed to me that the rogues were the "squishiest." Also, mages had heals beforehand.

However, on the note of bringing back old mage stuff, I would love for Inferno to return. Fiery twisting inferno of flaming fire was quite the dramatic spell, and it would be a good spell to close off choke points.

Same. Even if I didn't really like the Entropy tree in Da2 (loved it in Origins) I would like to see it return for the next game. Same with Creation since glyphs and stuff are always fun to play with. It's more consistent with lore as well. Thankfully they removed the codex entries related to the four schools of magic so newer players weren't confused but I would like to see them return.

I played Arcane Warrior in DAO and Knight Enchanter in DAI, and loved both. I would like more buffs and debuffs for mages to cast though.

Me too. I miss elemental/telekinetic weapons and buffs to stamina regeneration and the like. You know, elemental weapons are actually in DA:I, but the player can't use them? I first noticed it on Sutherland's team, then on enemies promoted by the Walk Softly trial. Too bad we are locked out of it, and many other enemy abilities as well.

Well, actually they are. There are no fireballs to hurl in DA:I :P

My favourite way to play a mage is as a "controller" (or should that be "control freak"? lol).

I like the spells that let me hamper my enemies and dictate the flow of battle -- protecting one ally with a forcefield here, healing another there, using a glyph of paralysis to neutralize a group of archers until my warriors have time to deal with them, etc.

So, yes, I would definitely like to see non-primal schools of magic return in a big way in DA4.

If we are going to Tevinter, I want my mage to have the option of a floating tome to cast spells with instead of a staff. So many mages using spirits to empower a big arcane book, and my mage just uses spirits for his lightsaber (or scaring people in my second playthrough with an elf), but never bothers with using an arcane tome like a wizard or something.

Same, I would love a Spellbinder Tome.

Are we looking for Mages who are glass cannons, or Mages who are ludicrously more powerful than the other classes?

When people get all nostalgic about wanting Mages to be like the ones in DA:O, I often wonder how many of those people are the ones who only ever play Mages.... or how many of them also complain about Warrior and Rogue  powers being "immersion breaking"

But we do have a mountain of cc skills in dai.

Locked out of skills locked out armor. May as well call it Dragon Age: Lock and Maybe Load.

We do? I mean wall of ice and ice mine but every "CC" is just damage with something else.
Nothing really feels pure CC. It just feels like damage with some other junk added (Looking at you Fire Mine)

I have fond memories of abusing blood magic in DA2 to keep all sustainable spells on Hakwe and Merrill at once.

Whatever happened to sustainable skills anyway? Audience dislike?

Most of the rift mage skills. Freezing of any kind is cc. Panicing enemies is cc. Stunning them is cc and thats 2 lighing spells. Mindblast. Destruction field. Spirit mark. Fire mine. And Static cage that hold mounds of enemies at bay.

We have plenty off cc spells for mages.
