How much presence should the protagonist's family have, if at all?  I liked the minor role of Shepard's mother and it seemed to work well enough at that. I get the feeling most people would prefer family maintain a off-screen appearance, but I would not mind seeing a family member present a bit like the case of Hawke's family having a sibling as a npc or party member, If a sibling were to appear in-game, it could take into account of the character's appearance like in DA2.

I would prefer my character having as much of a blank slate background and personality as possible, so no I don't think the protagonist should have a family ingame.

Start a family by the decisions we make in the game, I'd like see that, imagine that in the second or third part we do choose between saving our family or something that affects billions.

Love is the death of duty... i hope not.

I felt Bioware really did a great job making the player feel attached to the Couslands in DA:O and to a lesser degree the Hawkes in DA:2. As for Andromeda? At most I'd like a Mass Effect 1 style backround sidequest where maybe you have to choose between saving your sibling (was stationed aboard a ship) or obtaining some vital information/saving a colony. I don't expect it however.

Im hoping for an origin selection that leaves my past ambiguous as possible tbh. If the protagonist has to have a family then let it be optional.

Wait, Shepard's mother? Where, when, how was this?!

Since we more than likely aren't getting a blank slate... Family could interesting depending on how they're written in.

Bioware have a thing for killing of family members its predictable.

Hawkes Father/mother same with Cousland and Beth or carver die in the intro and sheps colonist background are both dead.

So if they want to use family members thats fine but do something else with them like with beth/carver were you could save one and send them down different paths give players choice and not lock the death in like Hawke mother.

I would like something like the protag father is in the Alliance as well and trained us to become a soldier.

I wouldn't mind like a cousin or something. Direct relations tend to suffer from giant 'You Should Care About Me' signs but cousins? You don't have to care about cousins. But you COULD care about cousins if you were so inclined, it's left more in the player's ball pit to define the depth of the relationship.

I'd rather a father/mother that was a merc or just a pure survivor, rather than dealing with that useless Alliance again.

I'm down with anything that will give me a motivation to fight beyond the I'm a badazz, hard-charging, ruthless, war hero soldier who will do it for my species cause I'm awesome like that.  But if Bioware were to do anything like this they'd have to show it in game to make the connection - as opposed to just telling us we have family off screen.

No, definitely not, unless it is absolutely vital to the plot it is best to leave the protagonist's past as vague and ambiguous as possible.

Unless the character's background plays a vital role in the plot giving the character a defined background and family adds little to nothing to the game, at best it adds throw away dialogue that nobody really cares about and adds nothing to the game but at worst it serves as a disconnect between player and character as the game tries to imply that your character cares about characters the player themselves might not care about or even really dislike *cough*Leandra*cough*.

Let the player decide for themselves who and what their character cares about and allow them to form their own connections to the world, video games should not be purely about the story the developer wants to tell but rather allow the player more freedom to define their experience by making their own contributions to the story, it is the sort of shared narrative experience that separates video games and movies and more video game developers need to break away from trying to emulate movies and realize what makes the video game medium a far stronger artistic medium.

Wait, Shepard's mother? Where, when, how was this?!

Shepard's mother Hannah appears (sort of) in all three games with Spacer background.

As Long as we can decide in game how we feel about said family (better if optional and connected to different background.)
I hated how in DA2 you had to feel affection for Leandra-worst-mother-ever and have to be in contrast with Carven no matter what.
I liked much more the city elf family in DAO, and it was great the chance of roleplay as if you don't care/can't stand them, or love them.

It could be interesting, depending on how they are written.

I'm down for anything that makes the protagonist a fully-fleshed out character. The less a blank slate, the better.

I'd like different backgrounds that don't necessarily have a big impact ingame. Like the way Mindoir was treated, you can talk about it, it's mentioned a few times in the news and you can tell that it changed Shepard, but it happened in the past and it stays there. A family could work as long as the game doesn't make assumption about the protagonist's relationship with them, as was already said.

I'm more concerned about the protagonist's personality. For all my complaining about autodialogue i ME3, Shepard doesn't have many lines compared to everyone else in the previous games and looks/sounds very stiff. Now if we had ME3 style conversation but more control over the autodialogue it would be great.

If they did, I'd prefer a sibling (or cousin) to a parent. I think there's more room for roleplay with a sibling. I really liked how it worked with Hawke in  DA2. Plus, these functional and healthy parental relationships just confuse my poor brain.  :P

I don't like/want a family/kids/previous spouse. I'd prefer to create my character.

Beside, you know they'd be killed eventually to create cheap drama. So nah

I'd actually prefer that. Idgaf about human deaths in games, but touch a kitty or a puppy and I'm murdering you. :)

I like the idea of a sibling, so long as you have moderate control over that relationship. Spousal stuff can sit in a black hole.

I think family could be done best if it's not used as a prop to "make you feel bad when this person dies." On the other hand having a sibling or familial character who is probably more familiar with my character from the start could be fun. It'd also be interesting how they could comment on your actions and relationships as the game goes forward, rather than getting shoved unceremoniously out of the way at the end of act one. Could be fun to go with an adopted sibling angle just so there can be a proper visual design for them rather than Character creator roulette.

For the most part I think it's how family would have to be written in and not as a cheap feel bad mechanism.

That's why I enjoy the dynamic with the surviving sibling in DA2. I don't like that the character is removed for most of Acts 2 and 3, but it was still fun to me. I like friendship Bethany and rivalry Carver.

Rivalry Carver sorta reminded me of my relationship with my sister taken to a bit of an extreme. I generally played a mage (a class that is not my favourite) just so I could fight with him, and be the superior Hawke.

What, you mean if the protagonist has kids who are slaughtered for some alien's veal and it sends them into a murderous psychotic breakdown? That could be interesting.

Great.  I just see it now...    "Your kids have daddy issues" all over the next ship.
