Should the protagonist have a family in-game?

I thought the death of the Cousland parents was actually a pretty good thing about the Human Noble. Sucks to be that character, but it made for a good story. Besides, Fergus is alive and well in the end and you get to interact with him, provided you avoid the ultimate sacrifice. With Hawke, at least there's the sibling, who you can save to the very end.

I couldn't agree me. To be honest, I hate deaths of protagonists' family members. Because they felt like my own. Hawke's mom situation left me depressed for a few days.  :P

Well, that's how you know the writers are doing their job.

I would like a balance between a 'choice' of fairly bland back stories ( allowing room for us all to fill in the blanks and add depth to our own particular version on the protag) and, as someone said, some form of non tragic background which would involve having blood or chosen family.

Difficult with parents unless it ties into the story arc but siblings, cousins and close 'lifelong' friends would work.

Hard to pull off and of course if players don't want any part of it then I'm not sure how much work that would be but I guess conversations/side quests/interactions could just not be followed up if you didn't want to do the 'family/history' stuff.

But an absolute no to existing life partners I think we need to 'fall in love' with someone in game for it to hold value and give us the opportunity to invest.

That's what they do best fall in with the characters that's what I like. Look I have 3 kids love them to death we go boating and ride horses fun stuff but when I'm playing a game I don't want kids until I meet and fall in love with one of there characters in the game then later on okay. I really do think or hope I can't see any in this one cause I'll have flashbacks. Not good ones either

I wouldn't be against it. Actually I wouldn't be against more A B or C backgrounds, but it would be cool if there was more opportunity to delve into them this time.

I kind of like the movie no longer a twist almost a cliche where the parent the protagonist goes to rescue, is a bad ass and does not need rescuing.

Fight your way past waves of enemies to find mom/dad surrounded in corpses gong what are you here for. Did you forget who taught you to shoot. I've been killing aliens before you were in diapers.

I dunno.. Sounds like something that would be difficult to implement in the game and make it something people would genuinely like. The idea also seems like an easy way to generate random fetch quests or obvious force in game death/vengeance plots for NPCs that players may not give two hoots about.

If there were a way to alter the family to match one's preferences or a way to gain family through marriage to a LI and birth and all that drama maybe it would be more bearable or viable. But I honestly don't want to be forced to take care of Commander What's his face's 2 boring kids & wife that serve as a boring motivation to have a better life secured for them on some planet in Andromeda.

I'm getting flash backs of Skyrim and Fable 2/3...

No.

I'd like the protagonist to have a great family with an absolutely wonderful parent child relationship. My only fear is if they had this bioware would kill them off which I would prefer to avoid.

I really liked it in the citadel DLC when Shepard gets a letter from her mother saying how proud she is. In dragon age I loved answering Morrigan's questions about the Warden's family. "I love them. What else would you like to know?"

Of course my family is pretty wonderful so this might be some self insertion on my part.

As a background choice like Spacer/Colonist/Earthborn, sure!

Hell no, I don't want any ugly kids nor annoying family members.

True, my femPC is only spreading 'em and getting a bun in the oven once human dominance is established and it's time to start building cribs to populate our new turf.

I would prefer my character having as much of a blank slate background and personality as possible, so no I don't think the protagonist should have a family ingame.

I really don't agree on this, Bioware does this WAY too much. Frankly that sounds utterly boring like one of Biowares most recent MCs The Inquisitor.

Molding the character the way you want is fine but having that character utterly devoid of anything in an already active and living world is just...boring. This is why Shepard and Hawke are my favorite Bioware MCs because they can have these things. Shepard can have a family to talk about when speaking with Ashley who is also from a military family and those moment in ME1 & 3 when they talk about or to Mama Shepard is a nice touch. Hawkes run-ins with Carver/Bethany can be happy, aggressive, or sad depending on how you treated them in Act 1.

I say yes to letting the MC in Andromeda having a family. Doesn't have to be Wife/Husband & Kid, could be a sibling or parent. Some connection to the world is always nice, makes it more alive.

This might be a snowball's chance in hell, but I would love the return of Origin stories. I certainly didn't mind having family members in that context.

I liked presence of Shep's mother in Spacer background. It didn't feel particularly intrusive.

I also enjoyed Hawke siblings in DA2. It was a good novel idea. So while there would be worries about how it would impign on my roleplaying characterisation i wouldn't be completely against the idea if they had an interesting story dynamic to explore with it & could work to make the relationship sufficiently variable.

I'm very firmly against Wife/kids etc as that would be too constrictive.

Would be nice as a background option, but "forcing" a family on us wouldn't be great. I'd like to have the option to be either a lone wolf with no family or someone who's family is still very much alive. And actually having real differences in-game depending on your background a la DA:O. ME2 and ME3 basically had no differences depending on background aside from a line or two.
