Could someone explain the mages barrier to me? I noticed under winter the mana surge passive which activates when enemies deplete my barrier. now i also noticed the barrier spell under spirit. but i am wondering if that is the only way to get the barrier i'd need? (i rather not spend points in spirit to be honest)

I mean yea other than if u have another mage get barrier Or the Knight Enchanter they gain a barrier depending on how much damage they do so you could do that an not need to get barrier but you really should get barrier like honestly lol.

 

It your main source of defense in the game.

It's not the only way, but the other ways of generating barrier are hard to obtain or unavailable at low levels.

 

Knight Enchanter specialization can automatically generate barrier on every hit.

 

I think there is also a new ring amulet that generates barrier, if you have Trespasser DLC.

 

Just spend 1 point in Spirit, or just have Solas spam barrier and always take him with you, until you pick up Vivienne or Dorian.

No it's a set of new amulets, e.g. enhanced and superb barrier amulet

 

you can get the enhanced version from "In Your Heart Shall Burn" in Haven but superb version is in Descent.

You can eliminate the 2nd wave of rifts with a couple of mages using dispel (in the spirit tree). When the arcs come out of the rift and hit the ground hit pause and go to tactical. Use dispel on one or more then go back to normal. Those spawns will instantly cancel. I've been able to dispel the entire 2nd wave many times.

 

Templar's Spell Purge does the job too but that skill is centered on the character and can't positioned as nicely as dispel.

Always have at least 1 mage in your party with Barrier. If you don't want it on your Inquisitor, bring another mage and give it to them. You can try substituting Guard generating abilities for 4 the party instead but you'll be playing with a handicap.
