Should the protagonist have a pre-set appearance and gender like Jade Empire?

I mean how much control over defining your character do you really want in these games? Bioware already seems to like saddling their protagonists with a past and prior family and friendships that the player care little about so they can bring it up in throw away dialogue in order to constantly remind you that you are playing their character and not your own, they also limit your actions to fall within the spectrum of the heroic type of character they want you to play, so what point does allowing us to customize the look of our character really serve?

I mean if you think about it having so many options in character creation (like having either short hair or short-medium hair) it makes it impossible for other characters in the world to reference our character by what they look like due to the amount of variables the writers would have to account for. Looking back to Jade Empire you will see there is only 3 appearance options for each gender (males: The big guy with the braided ponytail, the guy with the dragon tattoo and the guy with blue vest and yellow sash) which while still allowing some variation in appearance the limited choice allowed each appearance to be commented on in game.

For instance you might come across 2 people talking about you in public

Girl 1: "Omg did you see Master Li's star pupil? The one with the Dragon Tattoo? He is like, soooooooooo hawt!"

Girl 2: "What the guy with the scar? He is like super ugly and mean!"

Girl 1 "No that is Gao the Lesser who is the protagonist's rival so he is like super ugly and mean, I was talking about the protagonist who has the dragon tattoo who is super hawt and kewl, winky face"

Girl 2: " Oh yeah he is super hawt and kewl, I totally want to bang his brains out, winky face"

by limiting the options it allows the characters in the game to react to the player's characters appearance, it breaks mah immershun when all the characters in the game want to bang my character despite looking like this,

Should Biware drop the pretense and just go with fully defined characters?

No. It goes directly aganist the standard of customization they have built in the MA and DA franchises. Can you imagine the outcry?

If it's a guy: Misogyny!!

If it's a girl: Bioware alientating their majority fanbase who are male!

If they are white: Racist! White washing! Get with the times!

If they are not white: PC culture to the max! Bioware are SJWs!

Those are just the main ones. People would litteratly complain about everything no matter how the character looked.

There's no way Bioware is ever going back to a game without a detailed character customizer.

I don't know about the appearance/gender, but I honestly wouldn't mind if the character had a preset first name. So that your love interests could actually call you by your first name. That would be sweet.

As for a preset gender/appearance, I can only see it working if there's a female and male preset. It'd be interesting if it were like old Nintendo games, where the opposite gender you didn't choose instead becomes an NPC.

Aww nawwww it would not be just the one character or gender, you would have 3 options per gender kind of like Jade Empire only less racist towards anyone who isn't asian.

No.

I can go either way on the first name so long as it doesn't suck, but I would say no to a preset appearance and gender. BioWare's come this far with character creation. I see absolutely no good reason to get rid of it. I don't think reference to any specific feature of the character's appearance by NPC's is meaningful enough to be worth it.

Well given the Protagonist surname is Tsoni-Shephard, I'd say it's a moot point.

Nope. Character creation makes most players feel more attached to their character, it helps the illusion that the character is unique and belongs to them.
I'm ok with preset name, voice and background, but gender and appearance? Nah.

Id be fine with that, if it features deeper class customisation at character creation, such as stats, perks and so on with wider roster of classes than what we had in at least SP of ME3.

As others have said, there's no going back now. Most of us love character customization far too much to give it up. It has to keep improving, not vanish.

That said ... I feel every bit as attached to my Jade Empire character as I do the ones I designed myself.

It seems that being given even a little choice in how we customize our characters is far better than none at all. I imagine that many BioWare fans, especially girls, haven't bought and don't intend to buy The Witcher 3, despite its glowing reviews, simply because it forces you to play as a gruff male protagonist.

But you would get to select your gender and appearance, gender selection has always been between 2 options so you aren't really missing out on anything that Bioware games have done before in this regard so I have no idea what you are complaining about? It is like you people don't even bother reading the thread before responding.

As for appearance you still get to choose how your character looks, the only difference is you only get 3 pre-defined appearances to choose from. That said I don't think you will be missing much as lets face it the character customization options in Bioware games are pretty limited anyway (would you like the short hair or the slightly longer but still short hair?), this way if they limit the choices even further they can actually reference the individual appearances just as they can already reference useless tidbits about your character's past that serve little purpose in the narrative but to remind you that you are playing somebody else's character.

I read it. We'd get gender/appearance combinations, still more limited than what we got in the previous games. Few choices are better than no choice at all. Then again I'm mostly picky about face customization and body types (which we didn't get), other players might not care about it as much.

Nope. That would mean set protagonist. Although those can be fun, BW's games are fun cause you get to play your own character and not someone elses.

The only thing not set about a Bioware protagonist is the appearance and gender, Bioware protagonists are in essence set protagonists.

The character creator is one of the main draws in Bioware games. I think after DAI, if anything, they will be working on improving it (yes, I'm talking about hair).

Though this makes me think. Considering all the characteristics they gave the asari they could make the PC in a future game be that. Think about it, it could freshen up the gameplay by making all the classes use biotics to a bigger or lesser extent. I'm not saying take things from them, but develop biotics specifically for soldiers, infiltrators...It would free some of word limit they have for other purposes since our character would be refered as female. And for the romances you can center them around the relationship instead of "how will this work?" for obivous reasons.

I know a lot of people wouldn't want that, but it just hit me how practical it would be for Bioware if they ever decide to make a ME game (maybe a spin off?) that doesn't have a human protagonist.

Nope. Personality is not either, basically the character is still mine although BW gives out lines. If I compare my Shepards together they have lot of differences beyond appearance and gender. If you compare Witcher's Geralts together, well they are still always Geralt. And I don't want to play as Geralt.

I wouldn't mind that much.  But I have to say that since I couldn't get my Shephard to look handsome enough in ME1, I started with the default version an djust kept that throughout the whole game.  So now I'm excited to design my own character in Andromeda tbh.

This.
We'd get to choose between several preset characters, I get it, but we wouldn't be able to edit them. Granted, in the previous games the facial traits were preset too short of gibbed/3ds editing, but they still allowed for a decent number of combinations. It's possibile to create a fairly unique Shepard (with shitty hair, alright).

The only presets they should have are a handful of unique faces for each gender so that you don't have to spend an hour trying to make your character look just right only to find out that they look like **** in gameplay because the creator does a terrible job at showing you what they'll actually look like because you've got limited angles to work with and lighting that you'll almost never see in the actual game............not that I have any experience with that...

I think best would be to make couple good-looking, but customizable presets for both genders. Those who aren't into playing with CC could choose from those and play with it or customize their pick lightly (like eye/skin color, hair). Players who like to play with CC customize those presets as much they want to create truly unique characters.

Basically similarly as in ME and DA games this far. But just with better presets.

NO. I'm totally fine with having a default face for people that don't like character customization, but don't take away one of the features most of us love about the games.
