I actually was very excited about the Qunari being added as a playable race, but yes I agree the human attire on a Qunari (or Elf or Dwarf for that matter) was done poorly. I agree that each race should have had different armors/casual wear depending on the race. I also agree that if the story is not there, it will break a game. An example of this for me is Skyrim, I tried playing this game several times, but could never finish it because for me the story was lacking and all over the place and I found that the main objectives were lost to side missions so easily. Yes they had a CC, but the story killed the game for me. ![]()
Should the protagonist have a pre-set appearance and gender like Jade Empire?

And that's what they borrowed from a lot. Skyrim/TES. Throw in a bunch of options, where you're a prisoner in the beginning, and instantly become the chosen one... Skyrim, Oblivion, Morrowind... they're all the same. It's like a joke at this point. Always the prisoner turned savior. And it doesn't really matter who you truly are or where you come from or what the context of anything is.
Bioware can do better than that.

I definitely agree, the prisoner fetish has gone on long enough! I'd be happy with a random nobody rising through the ranks than another prisoner antic lol

You said it was necessary to take control away from the player in regards to being able to define their own surname and backstory just so other characters in the game have something to call you by and reference about your character, I showed you this is false as most of the time your character's last name is never mentioned and your past has no relevance to anything in the game and is only really mentioned in throw away dialogue.
How is taking away control from the player in regards to defining their own surname and backstory for the sake of other characters being able to reference the pre-defined surname and backstory so much different from taking away control over the character's appearance so other characters can reference visual traits of your character?
I was giving the benefit of the doubt before, but now I'm starting to realize that maybe this really is a troll thread.

It's a story... The writer is providing me with a story in which I can customize the character to make the story feel more personal whereas with a preset character, the story becomes less personal.
But by giving the character a pre-defined background and surname a pre-defined character is essentially what they give you, sure you can change the characters appearance to a degree but you don't get to define the things that truly matter and any changes you do make to the characters appearance have no impact on the game whatsoever, for all intents and purposes "your" (Bioware's) character is treated in game as if he looks like Vanderloo.
The thing you don't seem to be getting is that this thread is not really about having a pre-set appearance forced on the character but rather pointing out how the pre-defined backstory and surname don't really add anything to the game and actually take away from the experience, to be clear I don't want to see the CC taken away from future Bioware games however if you are going to saddle the player character with a pre-defined backstory, surname and implied connections to the world then you might as well drop the pretense of allowing us to create our own character and make them a fully defined character with a distinct appearance as well.

So can you answer my question or is this merely a poor feint because you don't want to admit I have a point?

I already provided an answer to that question; you just seem bent on ignoring it.

I don't see where you answered the question but if you did in fact already answer it then I am sure you would have no trouble pointing it out or repeating the answer. Mind doing so?

Parts of Skadi's witcher thread were among the most artfully deployed trolls I've ever seen on this forum. S/he's really very good.

Anyway as for the names. I have a question. When you speak to someone in real life how often do you use their name?
When my friend Christina walks up and talks to me I don't say. Christina! Then answer her question. When she walks up she doesn't say Ray, blah blah bake just starts with blah blah.
I only use their name if talking about them, not with them, when trying to get their attention while they are distracted, or if I have nothing to say and am just greeting them and even then it's usually just hey! And not hey Christina!
So how does npcs occasionally saying something like convict, soldier, Botonist or some other title in the rare cases when they would normally say your name negatively impact things.

I use names all the time... But if I'm just trying to wave them down or something, it's probably more like "Yo!" Or "Dude!"
But it's sort of strange to hear my folks call me by name. Rarely happens.

I'm anti social enough not to know the norm. But that seems odd to me. Names are used when I've pissed the person off but almost never otherwise.

Not sure that I know the norm either.
Also, if I do talk, it's probably in person. I barely use phones. If that makes a difference.

If I can't choose anything else at least I wanna choose my character gender I don't really care about the rest of it.

It depends. I use people's names a lot at work or in a group of friends I don't know so well sometimes. I'd rarely refer to my closest friends by their name.
So how does npcs occasionally saying something like convict, soldier, Botonist or some other title in the rare cases when they would normally say your name negatively impact things.
The titles annoy me when they're clumsy. Whenever I hear 'The Hero of Ferelden' I think 'that's a terrible title' and 'it should be Warden Commander Tabris'. Beyond that it's not so much (for me) that using a title is wrong but that someone's name never being spoken is odd.
