First time I played DA:I I used Cass, Varric, Solas the whole game because I simply got attached to them.

Next time the problem was that I played nightmare and wanted Solas again for new perspective and Cass AGAIN because I found her specialization extremely synergetic and powerful on nightmare. So I didnt get to swap companions around too much.

I finally managed to break this "Stuck with the same characters" circle now that I came back to replay DA:I for the DLCs. Using Blackwall this time I noticed everyone is bullying him:

Vivienne and Dorian is treating him like crap all the time. Solas is Ignoring him, its like Bioware forgot to add banter to Blackwall and Solas. Why is the team being such jackasses against Blackwall? When we first meet him the first impression for the group is that Blackwall cares for the little people and is a noble and rightious man. He is also a Graywarden so that implies a life of sacrifice for others. So I don't really understand why they are giving him such a bad time.

Currently I'm using (switching around a bit): Blackwall, Vivienne, Dorian, Solas, Sera. Did I simply choose the companions with the least chemistry? When my group isnt bullying Blackwall - Dorian and Solas is at eachother's throats.

Any companions friendly to Blackwall? :P

It's par for the course in a BioWare game.  Most characters snip at each other at the beginning, but most of them warm up to each other by the end.  Dorian and Solas snark at each other for a while, but IMO their banters don't have the meanspiritedness of, say, Anders' banters form DA2.

Cass and Blackwall are friendly up to a point, and Sera and Blackwall get along very well for most of the game.  Cole is nice to everyone.  I don't remember a lot of Bull and Blackwall's banters, but there was a really funny one about pink armor :P

I felt Solas got along fine with Blackwall. At least he did until Blackwall's secret got out, but even then it was a few snips and then an apology.

Ignore Viv being mean to him however, Viv is mean to almost everyone.

The rogues are probably your best best though, Sera is friendly with Blackwall, Varric does pretty well at getting along with everyone, and I don't think Cole can be mean.

Vivienne and Dorian hate him because their elitist snobs that think he's only good at hitting things. Basic classism. In Dorian's case though, Blackwall kinda of deserves it because he frequently calls Dorian a dandy pretty boy. Vivienne's just an ass.

Solas has a lot of banter with Blackwall, actually, especially about the nature of archdemons. You're probably not getting it because Inquisition is pretty bad with having frequent banter working.

Varric does have some snippy comments to Blackwall, who reminds him of Sebastian.  And we all know how much Varric adores the Prince of Starkhaven

But it's Varric.  If he's not snarking at you at least a little, you're doing something very wrong.

Solas and Blackwall banter a lot and after Solas gets upset at him after his personal quest, he even apologizes later and if your Inquisitor romances Blackwall, Solas hopes they are happy. Viv rarely says anything nice and Sera is a walking joke that keeps tensions from getting high (but add Cole and Solas with her and you find out she's not quite normal). I tend to use Bull, Blackwall and Solas, and sometimes Cass, Cole and Solas. They have some great banter!

Well, I didn't think of snarking being the same thing as snipping, in that Varric isn't really being mean, mostly just teasing. :P

The thing about relationships is that they usually have to go somewhere. If they start out good, there's nowhere for them to go but down.

Blackwall and Dorian eventually settle into a nice, easy camaraderie punctuated by snide remarks on Dorian's part and disgusted snorts on Blackwall's. Their barbs aren't aimed at each other's sore spots, they don't draw blood, and they serve mostly to reassure each other that they're good. They're comfortable enough around each other to say anything, and they frequently do.

Blackwall and Solas... don't really have much in common. Blackwall has his moments of simple clarity, but he's an uncomplicated person, and he likes it that way. Blackwall thinks in terms of us and them, heroes and villains, right and wrong. Solas is complicated. I don't know if they ever really get to the point where they respect each other, but they do seem to get to the point where they understand where the other is coming from, and that's about as good as it gets with them.

Blackwall and Vivienne were never going to be friends. She represents everything he hates, and he represents the life she ran away from.

Blackwall, Bull, and Sera begin as friends and stay that way the whole time.

Blackwall and Varric... their relationship improves after a certain point. Varric tends to treat people as potential book characters, and Blackwall isn't very interesting. Not at first. He doesn't have any faults Varric can play up through his writing, anyway Later on, all that changes, and the two reach a kind of truce. I don't think Blackwall approves of Varric's reasons, though.

I've been running with Blackwall, Cole, and Dorian for most of my latest game so I'm getting to hear things I haven't heard before. I hate how Viv treats Blackwall but then she's mean to everybody so she rarely gets used. Blackwall and Dorian were very mean to each other but now that I've used them together for so long, Blackwall has asked Dorian if they can ever be friends and Dorian said they could if he used "soap, lots of soap".

Even further along they have both apologized to each other for being so mean and they seem to get along ok. Now Dorian's problem is that he told Cole he could ask him questions and Cole is asking him things he doesn't want to talk about. Some of the things are sad and some are funny.

Blackwall starts out antagonizing Dorian, I thought.

He and Sera and Iron Bull get along pretty well. Varric is also neutral towards him.

I have the same problem, I usually use Cassandra, Varric and Solas for nostalgic reasons, but this time I want to give Vivienne a chance since I've never used her, and Sera because I sent her away on my last playthrough. I really want to try to bring everyone at least once. I'll probably trade in Cassandra for Blackwall because I really like the dialogues between Blackwall and Sera. But I don't want to get stuck on the same party for an entire game again.

Bull says that Blackwall has developed a "firm grip" from having traveled alone for so long. There are more, but that that is the one that makes me giggle.

What I feel is telling is that Varric, even though lighthearted about it, equates Blackwall with Sebastian. I detest Sebastian and his giant over-compensatory belt buckle.  So the fact that he thinks he is like Sebastian makes me not like him terribly much. I mean, I feel like Varric is a good judge of character.

I don't take Blackwall with me much because frankly, he bores me but I did notice Viv is absolutely  vicious towards him. It's funny in an I-can't-look kinda way.

Varric is a good judge of character... to a point.

Varric's main problem with Blackwall is that he finds him crushingly boring, like Sebastian. There's nothing he can ridicule, nothing he can mock. Varric has a lot of doubts about himself, and being around people who seem too good to be true reminds him of his own shortcomings, which he resents.

This is going to get a little meta, so let me apologize in advance.

The big revelation for Varric isn't Blackwall's reveal. It's that moment when Varric accuses Blackwall of being too nice, just like Sebastian, and Blackwall understand that Varric intended it as an insult. Sebastian would never have realized that. It's a turning point in their relationship, in fact. The thing is (in Varric's opinion), Sebastian was virtuous as a kind of default state, a non-choice. He's led a charmed life, and he's a prince, and he's nice, and blah. No conflict, nothing to write about. Blackwall isn't like that. With that "Sebastian would have took that as a compliment," Varric realizes that Blackwall's virtue is a choice he makes every day. He realizes that Blackwall understands that he could be evil, that he could have made other decisions, but that this was the life he chose. After that, Varric's a lot more willing to cut Blackwall some slack.

Hey, he thinks enough of the man to invite him to his Wicked Grace game. He doesn't do that with just anyone. Solas isn't there, for example, nor is Vivienne.

Hello,

Ever since I got Dorian and Blackwall I've been running with them plus either Varric or Cole (switching Varric was tough).  And I am very happy with them, they make me laugh when Dorian gets attacked and yells: Help the mage! and Blackwall runs towards him or yells: Help Dorian!.. simple game mechanics I know, but knowing how they talk to each other, those battle comments always make me smile.  Blackwall is my dearest tank :3.

Eh, I'm just before they start to be friendly to each other. Their comments are kind of mean, but they also say a lot about misunderstandings and expectations. Have you heard any of their comments? I don't know if I should mention the actual comments >.< . Well, thing is, if you think about what they are saying, it means that they do spend time together (like drinking at the tavern) or that they pay attention to each other and that they want to know what the other thinks. If you are romancing Dorian, he is the one that will ask Blackwall if he wants to know anything. They also have a beautiful comment that changes a bit if you are a male or female inquisitor, even if the game gives the chance to answer with the same comment <- priceless ^^.

Cole is not mean, but Blackwall doesn't like him at first, yet they have awesome comments. And, well I have Cole in the party so I could get some inside info about those 2 guys >:3 .

To tell you the truth, at some point I started to think: ok if Dorian places 2 crit spells, our tank is dead, but if Blackwall charges.. Dorian is so dead.. I wonder what would happen.. umm.. Yay for fun and tension in my party!.

Lets be real here, there is no way Viv would willingly set foot in the inn. I mean it's inhabitants include Sera and Cole and I can't really think of better de Fer-Away Spray than that.

I took Blackwall to most of my parties, 'cause he is a really good tank. But, honestly? I think he's... meh, boring.

Also, I haven't noticed much hostility from Vivienne towards him... she barely joined my parties, so there wasn't much "throwing shades" between them. At least, Sera called her a "biatch" at some point, which... well, she is.

If everyone was all "butterflies and rainbows" with one another the banter would be boring as hell to me. I haven't used Blackwall all that much but I thought he and Solas got along fine. As well as Iron Bull and Sera.

Blackwall and Sera are great together, particularly during the Trespasser DLC. Definitely my favourite of the companions to take through it so far.

Solas likes him to start out with, but not so much later. Viv really doesn't like him and I don't know if that improves. Cole tries to be nice to everyone   Varric isn't much of a fan. I can't remember any dialogue with him and Dorian, and I never ran with him and Cass or IB together.

They have an almost friendly banter after her personal quest. He offers condolences on Bastien's death and she thanks him. That's the only civil banter I know of with these two, though.

Yes but, are Solas and Viv not there because they just turned him down or Varric didn't invite them?  Is that ever explained?  I feel like Wicked Grace is below Vivienne's station and Solas doesn't seem the type to do anything fun for well, fun.   Generally in my PTs Soals  isn't really my friend.  And in my canon PT Viv was definitely not Caitlyn's friend.  Makes sense that neither of those two people were not in the room for Wicked Grace.  I don't want to play cards with people I think are raging a-holes.  I also had one PT where BW was not at the game, but I think I purposely let him sit in jail for a bit before springing him.

My problem with Sebastian is that I hate him and think he's the worst companion in the history of companions (and some companions have had some doozies of issues).  Maybe even worse than Solas.

Leliana's also not present for Wicked Grace.  Varric doesn't seem the type to leave people out, even people he doesn't like as much, so I think she, Solas, and Vivienne just declined.  Which makes sense for their characters.

No it's not that. Blackwall said Solas was a card demon when he played another type of card game with him. If you don't recruit Dorian, Leliana is kicking Cullen's butt by cheating stealthy and Viv with her perfect game face would win everytime! Varric invited all the ones who are lesser players lol
