The ultimate sacrifice was part of the Warden's personal story, but just having the present pc decide the fate of his/her predecessor is somewhat silly in my opinion. I think Stroud/Alistair/Loghain should have taken the choice away from the IQ, I think they should have had agency to decide that the Wardens screwed up. Not only in the current mess, but in how the whole issue of Corypheus was dealt with in the first place.

In this case, it really shouldn't have been a player choice, in my opinion.

An option to let die the Inquisitor in DA:4

Bad idea: schrödingering past protagonists has brought nothing good to the story, forcing the writers to dance around the situation in increasingly convoluted ways.

Until they start working on the final episode of the series, where they'll have more leeway to craft open endings, the writer should refrain from making protagonists' deaths optional: if they want to kill the Inquisitor, then they'd better kill all of its variations instead of throwing them in the dead-&-alive-at-the-same-time-limbo already occupied by the Warden & Hawke.

I'm not a fan of "choose which character you like more and want to live" choices.

Personally, I chose to sacrifice the character who looked the less ridiculous during their last stand: sorry Stroud, by I'm not in the mood to watch Hawke trying to beat to death an oversized spider with a big stick.

I'm for just MacArturing them...

"Old soldiers never die, they just fade away."

Heroes do go back to their lives sometimes. We're not talking Superman, who's always on duty.

I'd rather they be treated like we would in the real world. They retire to some nice corner and let the next generation handle the world.

I think doing that would be interesting as long as they didn't make it a predictable situation. Not a heroic sacrifice basically, if you have the choice for them to die make it something dramatic and unexpected. Not "I choose Inquisitor to die" but "I made this choice and it caused the Inquisitor to die" perhaps similar to the Suicide Mission in ME2.

Now getting out of my writer's mind PLEASE DON'T MAKE CHOOSE! Especially your options, my Inquisitor or Morrigan maybe Leliana? Oh I couldn't do it, I just couldn't handle it. I love my Inquisitor and Leliana and Morrigan is the mother to my Warden's child and breaking up their family....agh nope. Thinking about it makes me want to cry in a corner.

I don't know. I made Loghain a Warden and Alistair a king.

Alistair as Warden in DA:I was quite shitty, tbh. Loghain is ten times the Warden, leader and strategist he is.

But to make a better, more thrilling choice between the Inquisitor's life and someone else in DA 4? Sure, I'm all for it.

If DAI taught us nothing else, it's that winning all the time without the threat of defeat also sucks.

Compulsory death, prior to DA4 starting would be epic.

The inquisitor was assassinated, and their body desecrated, and hung up for display.

To be honest I thought   choosing between Hawke and the warden.  It felt really  bad to leave anyone but stroud behind. I mean given the history you have with the others. And varric if u killed his brother in da 2  all he has is Hawke and those friends. so its like him loosing  the last bit of his family again. Alistar might have been not as good as loghin but at lest Alistar never hunted down  a whole order to  make his own political gain. Killing his best friends son to accomplish his goals. But as for  having  the inquistier  die, it would have to be something emotional   like when  you   had to decied if  you took morrigans  dark ritual deal or if  you would  die. it  seemed tho in dai tho i was disappointed that  you  survived  handling the orb. I mean it was solas orb if you were not good friends with him or something shouldn`t it have I don`t know  killed you from using it at the end.

Within story context Haven was, by any measure, a defeat.
Especially in that it's possible to take direct civilian losses, and they aren't just red shirt #3, 4 and 5.

So unless you're going to actually do the Suicide mission thing of ME2, which seemed a gimick to me since there's this thing called a save game, there's never going to be any real threat.

And if I may point out there are parts where you can fail either totally or partially. CoJ siege of the Hall comes to mind or Wicked Eyes.

So the idea there is no threat in DAI isn't exactly true. There's less true chance of failure (ie by dint of your actions) in DAO. The US is a victory, and I can't think of any true choice that's a fail except dying during combat. You always get the help you need. You always manage to defeat Loghain. You get to Denerim in the nick of time. Any press of time is an illusion, so take that as you will.

When bioware bring past protags back they do like to kill them off like with Hawke and Revan i expect there will be a scene in DA4 were he could die.
