Since I generally play as a straight female (life imitating art there) I go for Cullen.  However, I love everything about Dorian and romance the hell out of him if given the opportunity.  I was so sad for my Rafe after Trespasser when Dorian told him he was going back to Tevinter.  Like, a piece of my hurt hurt.  No really.

Yeah I was emotionally invested in their relationship.

I was happy that Cullen and Caitlyn had that sort of fairy tale happy ending though.  I'm sure they will produce adorable little curly haired magelets.

None of the above.

I just flirt with Scout and stick to that.

Honestly, The "best" romance is a subjective thing. I think it depends on The Inquisitor as much as the personality of the LI. I am currently doing a Reaver fem!Trevelyan so am debating Josie (total softie despite the reaver spec) or Sera (just wanna have fun?).

Best is Solas. I normally prefer a fairy tale ending (I stress enough IRL to not want to deal with it in game), but Solas was worth it. DAI makes the most sense, for me, with a female mage Lavellan romancing Solas (especially with JoH and Trespasser). Never thought I would make an elf my canon, but there you have it.

I've also enjoyed the Trevelyan/Cullen I've completed so far, though.

Sadly, Blackwall bored me. Pity, because I love beards and brunets (apparently, that is how 'brunette' is spelled for a male).

Watched all of the rest on YouTube once I accepted I wouldn't have time to play through them all. Sera was entertaining, Dorian was heartwarming, Iron Bull was intriguing and enticing (I wish he were designed more like the Arishok in DA2, especially considering the bondage flair), and Cassandra and Josephine were sweet. I don't think I would have enjoyed any of them as much as Solas and Cullen, though.

I've only played two, Bull and Solas, both with male Lavellans.

Not surprisingly, Solas wins out as the best simply because it is so tied into the plot, and the relationship actually revolves around your character's race and heritage, which hasn't been done before. The fact that it ends fairly tragically also makes it quite moving. Each of the romance scenes (there are three) advance the relationship in a meaningful way, and also shed light on Solas's character and personality and even motivations (his reluctance to continue the relationship each time, for instance... you later learn the reasons behind that reluctance). The flirts are quite natural, not raunchy at all, and excellently voiced by both parties (though I can't speak for anything but the male English inquisitor voice). What was kind of funny to me was that my inquisitor sounded rather flirtatious while Solas just seemed a wee bit flustered. Though when I flirted with him as a mage, his personality changed ever so slightly; he was more aggressive then. Very interesting.

Bull's was not a bad romance (even if personally it was not great for me at all); it had a lot of scenes and explored something that hadn't been explored before in the games (BDSM). His character however isn't as integral to the plot as Solas', and there really is very little tension in the relationship, so it simply doesn't have the amount of drama that Solas' has. The ending can be potentially tragic, but I wish that tragedy had been handled better. On top of that, I don't think FPJ's voice was consistent enough for the character, and that hurt quite a few scenes and took me out of the story a few times.

The only other romance I will likely play is Cullen's (again with a male Lavellan because I am boring like that); I'm guessing it'll be in between the two, simply because the Cullen romance allegedly has a LOT of scenes; also I think the voice actor really stepped up his game, so I imagine that adds a touch of subtly to each romance scene. Unfortunately the character seems a lot more vanilla than in the previous two games; there's no longer much controversy surrounding Cullen, and thus I think his romance could end up being, well, again, vanilla. Perhaps a little too romance novel like.

As for the others... I might consider romancing Cassandra with a mod (female, not sure what race) but it seems unlikely just because I can't imagine my playing this game four times, ugh >.<

I started the Blackwall romance but the two were confessing their feelings for each other during the first scene in Skyhold, which took me by complete surprise because all I recall doing was flirting with the guy a couple times. I won't be finishing that playthrough.

Sera is too child-like for me, but I have heard/read great things about her romance.

Dorian's is too overshadowed by the homophobia issue, but his character is really great, and his voice actor freaking knocks it out of the park. If i could get rid of the damn mustache (wish someone would update that mod ;_;...) I might actually complete this romance.

Josephine is simply too boring for me; I no longer even talk to her character when I play and have never completed her personal quest.

^^^all are just my opinions of course ^^ Everyone's going to have their own "best" romance...

Dorian.

He's one of the very few characters I actually like as a person and his romance is very sweet and realistic.  I enjoyed watching him grow into a more confident person with his own goals.

Dorian. I have a soft spot for this guy. But one question bothers me always. Is it really the inquisitor he wants. Or he's with inquisitor, cause he's the first person to treat him nice, nor like a freak, nor like a sextoy.

I can understand the reason behind that conclusion. A part of me thought of that as well, the IQ would be Dorian's first relationship/love and well, first loves are first for a reason.  But there have also been couples who were each other's first loves and stayed together until the end.  So it can go either way.  And since he stays with the IQ for 2+ years despite their distance and after he's gained more confidence then it's pretty safe to say that he loves the IQ genuinely.

If i could get rid of the damn mustache (wish someone would update that mod ;_;...) I might actually complete this romance.

Yeah, I updated the Dorian no mustache mod(for personal use), but it still didn't work for trespasser.  :(  I just had to head canon that Dorian grew it in 2 years later.  Right now, I don't even think the original creator of that mod is interested in updating it.

I think he stopped being active in the community some time back in February :( I think we could probably request it; I don't imagine it's very difficult to mod (I say this knowing nothing about modding, but people are constantly updating skin textures, hair styles, etc. for companions, so why not facial hair? but again, I really don't know). Eventually I go on the DAI Tools forum and maybe politely request it; I mean this could conceivably be a good canon romance to import into DA4 so I feel it is worth playing.

Cullen!

Solas may have taken over if he had a few more scenes to develop it further, but I romanced Cullen in my first playthrough and was spoiled by getting so much interaction. The last half of my Solas playthrough I was sad because it seemed to sort of disappear apart from party banter.

Solas for me. Not only does he have some of the best romance scenes (even if they are heartbreaking), it still has the potential to go somewhere epic. Plus, I love romances that are closely tied to the plot.

I even gave up my usual human protagonist for an elf one I enjoyed the romance so much (plus the elf fits better with the plot in the end imo).

To add to this... It's obviously explored a bit more with the friend version, but there is some mention of it as well with the romance version. Dorian admires the Inquisitor for who he is as a person and what he has been able to accomplish, and that inspires him and makes him want to aspire to bigger and better things. That is a tremendously powerful influence to exert over someone.

So I think that the relationship between Dorian and the Inquisitor really has multiple levels that are far beyond a sexual attraction or a " senpai noticed me" kind of thing.

I honestly think that Dorian would have been happy to have found a friend and nothing more, and of course we see that he is with the friend version of events in the main game as well as in Trespasser. While the romance and what that teaches him has significance because of his personal history, I think the emotional closeness is probably the really significant thing to him, which you also get in the friend version. But, Dorian is a grown man who enjoys sex and has had a lot of it, regardless of his emotional state at the time of various encounters (as shown in WoT Vol. 2). So I think that with the romance he gets something of everything: the emotional closeness he craves, in addition to a stable, healthy, sexual relationship with a man he respects and admires. Really, you can't ask for more than that.

And of course the events in Trespasser show that he has such confidence in the relationship, and in the Inquisitor, that he knows it can be maintained even over time and distance. That really says a lot about his growth over the course of the game.

I'd say the most realistic romance for the mythos is Josephine. Arranged marriages, particularly for a family in Josephine's financial straits, is hardly uncommon, and as the heir, she has a duty to perform. As a bit Disney as the romance was, it felt like it belonged in a story such as this.

Cullen's felt very real as well. The scene at the lake was great, and the soft dialogue at the conclusion really brought home the Femquisitor as a real woman.

Cassandra's combined humor and heart, but I don't think it handled the duty in the way Josephine's romance arc did. Cassandra as Divine felt more like an afterthought, that I could just ignore it.

Sera's was very id. It fleshed her out in a way she sorely needed, and helped me release a lot of frustration with her character, but in the end, it's little moments of maturity didn't really make it feel real. Worse if an elf romanced her. However, I love her line about how "we both like women" to a Manquisitor that tries to romance her.

Solas's romance was incredibly esoteric. I really feel like you have to care about the ancient elves a lot to get something out of it. I sorta do, but not enough to really like the romance.

Aside from some humor with IB, I don't particularly like his romance.

Blackwall had a decent romance, but I think it wasn't different enough from a non-romance.

I can't bring myself to do Dorian's romance, I have no interest in his character.

Harding is cute, but she has too much lack of content to properly judge.

Dorian's romance is amazingly well done imo. Loved the conclusion in Trespasser too. Go Dorian! :D

Only played Cullen and Solas romances (Solas romance is going to be the canon and Cullen romance will be the 2nd Inqui on the side), but having watched all the videos for the other ones I would say...

Solas is still the best for what people have mentioned before (relevance to the plot, character importance, side missions etc). For instance when playing Trespasser, you get to the wall painting with Fen'Harel removing Valaslins.. Human Trevelyan says "dalish tattoos" while Lavellan calls them with the right name.. and right there tbh I felt like she could immediately make the connection to Solas even before finding all the other clues.. while for someone who hasn't romanced Solas, this is just a painting with no real meaning.
And there are other instances like this.
However we all know it's a painful and sad romance so it's probably not for everyone.

Cullen is also lovely and has a lot of scenes. With his romance you get it all.. A bit of fear, angst, worry, the feeling about taking care of each other, love, and a happy ending. It's a complete one I would say. Which is why I would assume most people prefer this. (And let's face it the Commander is smokin' hot! :P)

Cassandra's romance looks adorable to me from the videos I've seen. It's very well made and I like how she looks strong and full of willpower from the outside, but the more you get to know her you see she's a "softie" inside. The scene where the Inquisitor reads her a love poem, I just adore her expression of surprise and happiness at the same time.. like she's about to start jumping for how incredible it is to her that he did that. She is just lovely and if I'd played a man I would defo had gone for her.

I would say these are my favourite 3 ones..

As for the others.. I'll just say which impressions I got quickly.

Dorian's seems to be also great! How can someone not like Dorian? :D
Josie's is okay but a bit too bland.. There isn't even a sex scene cause she is all about "platonic love" it seems. And there are less scenes I think (might be wrong).
Bull's is awesome and I have a lot of fun watching his videos. You get the kink, the ass spaking, and the awesome scene where they're at it and people walk into the room.. :D One of the best scenes in the game.
Blackwall might be boring at the beginning but you learn to love him if you help him redeem himself and see that he still has worth inside.

Sera.. I dunno, I don't have any feeling for her. First I hated her.. Now I don't hate her but I don't particularly like her.. She is a bit too rude and too forward for me and I don't like the way she speaks or how quick she is to dismiss everything etc. So meh. But just my opinion.

:P
