Well, I'm only in the second chapter of this game.  But so far I have been in only one combat, which was entirely optional (it was an arena fight)  Otherwise I have been able to talk, bribe, or threaten my way though everything.  Heck once I solved two separate quests to deal with groups of troublemakers by bribing one group to attack the other!

This guy's like if a Ferengi and TOny SOprano had an illicit love child  :P

Okay, I may have to get this game now.

Well, since Bioware excels in Special Snowflake characters, I tend to enjoy them sparingly. I liked the Inquisitor because Black City - totally headcanoning that I went there and became a God to rule the world - but appreciated Hawke most out of all three protagonists so far. Being a person simply trying to survive in the midst of a Blight beats being Bioware's routine savior of the world/galaxy any day for me, because the latter is almost always what their RPGs are about. The Warden is my second favorite, even though they're determinant and will likely only have references in future games.

Special snowflakes have their place, I liked the Spirit Monk in Jade Empire.  Shepard and the Inquisitor got way too much ego stroking though, everyone telling them all about how unapproachably awesome they are.

Hawke was a welcome break from that

I felt Hawke got a ton of ego-stroking too. Maybe less than Quizzie and Shepard, but with less sense that it was justified with what they'd actually done.

True, I guess I was just thankful not to be made out as the messiah for awhile.  With Hawke it was more "Your a person that gets things done well", even if it was inaccurate.

I was always thought the Warden was the most 'get things done'. Hawke really was just there, for luck. The Warden had a purpose, to kill the Archdemon and end the Blight. The Inqusitor wasn't any better though. I like the Warden the most, because Hawke just... Didnt do anything that mattered what so ever. Your choices meant crap in DA2. I mean, seriously, besides you could become Viscountess/Vicount and you must defeat a Qunari attack, you were just a speck of nothing. I like the Wardens story more, becuase at least I could win some. The Warden must've won a lot to prepare us for Hawke's failures in life. The Inquistor won way more then the Warden, the Warden could at least die horribly or get dumped by Alistair/Morrigan. I dislike both the Inqusitor and Hawke, becuase they either won a lot, or totally made a mess of things. At least with the Warden you could both win and lose at the same time (dying to the Archdemon and leaving your LI to mourn your lost is bad, i tell you). So there's the reasons why I dislike and like some people.

I'd like it to be warden-like who can die depending on the choices you make, special snowflake or not.

One thing that took me away from the last 2 franchises was that there was no danger to them or their companions (outside of killing/banishing them) at all even when taking on a super difficult and dangerous mission. There was no real difficult decisions to make, say for example the DR. They just go in there and stab stab kill kill and come out unscathed and back to having a fiesta like TGIF. To me that's ott snowflakey.

I really don't see any of these guys as a special snowflake or super bad a--. The characters fit the story they are in. Hawk was just there. Everything bad seem to happen to Hawk. That was his/her story. You knew it was coming because Varric was being interrogated.

The Warden is unique in that he/she gets screwed in the beginning of the game. The Taint is a bag way to go. The Warden is the person against all odds "makes it". It is the story of ultimate sacrifice. Even if you win and live you have the Taint which will drive you crazy before you become a ghoul.

The Inquisitor accidentally gets the mark which closes Rift. Special snowflake??? For the most part I thought the Inquisitor just uses the mark to close Rifts and send Cory back to the fade. That person was a skilled mage/warrior/rogue before the mark. In the end that person loses their arm.

What character did I like the most, Inquisitor first and Warden second. Both these characters were able to make major decisions on their own. Hawk was my least favorite because things just happened to them. They had no control of what was happening.

Thinking about the DAI story as a story, I think the protagonists badassness bothers me more than their special snowflakeness

Protagonist was in the right/wrong place and the right/wrong time and picked up a power crucial to saving the world - OK
Protagonist gets hailed as a holy figure because of those powers, though they may or may not believe that themselves - Interesting
Protagonist rises to the challenge of leadership that circumstance has put them in - Cool
Protagonist also turns out to be one of the best combatants in the world, independently of their special ability - seems unnecessary and makes the protagonist a bit of a mary sue.

I wonder if we couldn't have a DA game where the companions were actually better combatants than the protagonist, so we don't have to be like Frodo, Aragorn and Legolas all wrapped into one.

Sera and Viv are two of the strongest characters in DAI. Sera and Viv can solo a dragon. I don't think this game tried to make your character stronger. You didn't get the big extra boost like the warden did in the fade.

The Inquisitor isn't really made more powerful than their companions, but they're not weaker -they can take the same specialisations, after all - but considering their companions include people like the Hero of Orlais, a First Enchanter, Red Jenny and [spoiler] that still makes them pretty crazily awesome.

The HoF and Hawke both had much less exalted company.

Just once I'd like to play a bumbling nincompoop hero who somehow saves the world in spite of (or even because of) their own spectacular incompetence.

Try Tales from the Borderlands.  Rhys pretty well falls into this category.

Fiona less so, but she's clearly in over her head a lot too  :D

Ha. The Dragon Age equivalent of Johnny English, who everyone can see is a blind imbecile yet who somehow saves the day, anyway.

I imagine you'd do ridiculous and awesome things like killing a high dragon by leaning against a boulder, which then falls right on top of said dragon's head before your party even knows it's there, and eliminating an assassin who's trying to kill you by accidentally putting deathroot extract on your own food, which the assassin then proceeds to eat because you give it to him out of kindness, thinking he's your loyal friend. lol

Thedas thinks you're the ultimate badass; only your close companions know you suck at everything, but survive thanks to the Maker's strange luck.

I was thinking Guybrush Threepwood from Monkey Island, but yeah, pretty much.

It fits the story. HOF was deemed an outlaw. Hawk wasn't even in a mission. People think the world is about to end so it makes sense top notch people will join the Inquisition. The Divine is dead what else is Cass going to do with her time?

I think I would prefer a Ciaphas Cain, the so called coward who in spite of doing everything to stay out of danger ends up in anyway and saves the day building up a glorious legend they'd rather not have because it makes people want to put them into greater danger.

How about a Johnny Depp Captain Jack Sparrow type. He is not a hero type, but has no other choice but to save the world. He can play dumb and outwit the trickster.

No and yes. I want to be the leader of my companions. But yes to the not a leader of a organization. I have a vague feeling that people on this thread want another Shepard/Hawke situation.... I really don't want another Hawke in DA, Hawke... Ugh. Ugh. To you too Shepard. Both bland and boring as characters. I don't trust Bioware with badass normal characters, they'd up looking like losers in the end. It's not worth it, to me.

Put me down for badass normal as well.  It's just makes for a more compelling story most of the time.
