The wiki seems to imply that it's not possible to complete Trial of the Lovers without recruiting the mages as allies. But I've seen conflicting reports on this.

Has anyone managed to keep everyone after picking one of the other 3 options? If I (for example) conscript the mages, can I keep Cole by doing lots and lots of Hinterlands quests before re-entering Skyhold? Or does he leave the first time I enter Skyhold, i.e. immediately after In Your Heart Shall Burn? Blackwall and Dorian shouldn't be an issue, since I'll have time to build approval in Haven.

I did Trials of the Lovers with conscripted Templars.

But I believe you can consript mages as well. Before 'officially' recruiting Cole, you need to complete The Forgotten Boy, which should grand you enough approval for him to not leave immediately.

Ah, that was one of the things that I was confused about. Does The Forgotten Boy still happen if Cole's at really really negative approval? He doesn't skip straight to leaving?

Because yeah, if that quest happens, all I have to do is land the "Greatly Approves" option and I'm golden.

He's not officially in your party, so he can't (won't) leave. You need to recruit him with that quest first.

At least I believe so.

I can 100% confirm that you can get the achievement in a playthrough where you conscript the mages.  I just did it a few days ago.

You can complete The Forgotten Boy on your first visit to Skyhold, even if Cole has low enough approval to leave the next time you reenter.   Even if you miss the approval from that quest (like I foolishly did), you can get more than enough approval to keep Cole by exhausting his "You've done odd things" dialogue (see here).  This can be done on your first visit to Skyhold.  You just have to save/reload a few times to trigger all of the ambient NPC conversations that need to be overheard to unlock the relevant Cole dialogue.

Oh, that's a good idea with the "you've done odd things" branch. I forgot about that!

When I was looking on the wiki, I was considering a similar strategy with judgments (since those also happen in Skyhold), but then I realized I'd have to leave Skyhold once in order to get Sit in Judgment to appear.

Fortunately this inquisitor will probably trigger the Greatly Approves in The Forgotten Boy. If I'm not mistaken, that will be juuuuust enough to get me out of the danger zone.

Thanks for popping into the thread! It's reassuring to hear that The Forgotten Boy will still trigger.
