My head canon is that the Conclave had ended for the day and the Divine had retired to her bed chamber. Corypheus and his ensorcelled Wardens killed her guards and took her captive. Morgan happened to be nearby at the time and heard the screams; when he went to Divine's chamber, he interrupted Corypheus' ritual.

my canon lady got lost. She always gets lost. Was probably trying to find a privy during a break in the Conclave meeting and heard the Divine yelling. Guessing the guards were taken care of by the Wardens acting under Cory's orders.

My Trevelyan/Lavellan was wearing either their noble/mage clothes or Dalish outfit and after being watched over for 3 days by Solas and Adan, I would assume Cassandra put me in that outfit (ordered the elf lady that you see at Haven when you wake up again), my other clothes most likely disintegrated.
I only thought that after the scene in the Fade where your outfit changes to match what you are wearing and your Herald was dreaming at the beginning. The codex says she was mumbling about many eyes and Grey (Grey Wardens), so the opening was you dreaming. That's how I see it.

As for the outfit, I always kind of just assumed that my character only arrived somewhat recently and that he was wearing the merc garb while on the road in order to save his best outfits for the actual peace talks.

Not much of a story, but here goes:
My Inq. was taking a nap after a long walk to the Temple of Sacred Ashes, a wondrous mystical place located in the arse end of nowhere, when some loser went into her tent and stole all her s***, armor and all. Didn't even spare her pink earmuffs.
So what does she do? She invites a merc to her tent, bare naked and all, pretending to offer sex and then knocks him down kung fu style. She proceeds to wear his armour, which STINKS - mercs don't shower often - and leaves the camp to gather some clues as to where the thief might be.
Next thing I know, she went looking for him and then heard all this shouting nearby. Thinking perhaps she finally caught him red handed, she goes inside the Temple and kicks the door, demanding to know what the f*** was going on there... when some tall dude dressed in skirts turns to look at her and the Divine throws her a magical green ball. Shiny.
She picks it up, not thinking at all because the sheer oddity of that scene made her temporarily stupid... and that's when the world blew right on her face.

I think I like this best. Simple and in a wonderfully random way gets the PC in the right place at the right time. Could also work for many different PC Quizzy incarnations.

My Adaar said it best in in Val Royeaux; "I'm just a qunari, in the wrong place at the wrong time." That's good enough for me.
Best quote to explain the beginning in game.
"I'm just a qunari, in the wrong place at the wrong time."

my Lavellan was just smoking too much Elfroot out behind the Temple, got lost, and then stumbled across Cory. Explains all the fumbling and dazed looks of my Inquisitor in the Temple and elsewhere.
Do carta dwarves smoke elfroot? I might have to use this if I have time for a carta dwarf play-through. Works for the elf play-through also of course.
Just read in the wiki that Elfroot's medicinal properties were re-discovered in 4:20

I really like the dreaming idea.
I'm not opposed to Cass addressing the lack of suitable attire issue either.

Yeah, in trying to decide among so many races and classes the Inquisitor could be I think I tried to look too hard for significance in less important beginning info like the merc garb they start us in.
That it is called mercenary coat is an artificial game mechanic listing in the player's inventory. For the actual character you create it doesn't hold any significance to them other than what they are currently wearing. It's a blank slate in game beyond what it visually looks like for the player.
It would have been another fun extra if they added a few more choices when they added the skyhold outfits but we are only in the initial outfit for a short time.
I of course would have chosen that sweet default beige Haven outfit to start in if given the chance.

This wins for best developed potential if they had made an origins DLC. Especially for the kung fu action which could have been an awesome addition in a DLC.
The thief might have been my carta dwarf cuz he is partial to pink earmuffs. They offset his casteless tattoos with just the right amount of sultriness.

My Lavellan probably had a specific reason to check in there. I don't know what it was, exactly, but she seemed confident. She made a lot of decisions with no input from me, and I just found out about them when she said "we're doing this."
My Cadash got a feeling, a sense of needing to go to that room. A nudge from Andraste? Or, well, that's the story after Here Lies the Abyss. What's been forgotten: all the other times that "feeling" came and it led to nothing.
As for how they all got into there, Lavellan and Cadash are both sneaky folks, when they're trying to be. Adaar probably blustered his way in, "nah, I'm totally not supposed to be here but I think I'll just go in brah. Don't worry, it's cool, it's cool." Just a constant barrage of words until the guards let him through out of sheer confusion.

My female Trevelyan mage always had a templar kink (romanced Cullen) so she was poking about for the templar changing room to see what they were packing under those tin cans. Made a wrong turn, found Cory instead. The line "what's going on here?" was actually supposed to be said with a flirty teasing tone. She was hoping to burst the door open to some in flagrante delicto action.

My first Inquisitor was an Adaar, so I have no need to headcanon her merc outfit. The reason she burst into the chamber is because one of the circle mages she was trying to make friends with called her a 'lanky ox' in front of a whole crowd of Templars, forcing her to run off in embarrassment, the poor dear.

Actually, we don't know what she was wearing at the conclave, since we see this scene twice, and she was in two different outfits.

Remember what I said about in the Fade the outfit she is wearing shows up in the memory? We never see what she actually wore, just what we are wearing at the time the memory happens. The conclave explosion happened days before she woke up. If you read Adan's notes, he comments on her symptoms as she lays in bed. Solas tells us he spent those days by our side too. So I doubt what we are wearing at the beginning is what we wore to the conclave. It's what we were placed in when we were being healed and seen as a possible murderer.

I played a Dalish so he was supposed to spy...So I just assume he was busy spying and going where he wasn't supposed to go.
Of course when he heard a grandma crying for help , he rushed to the rescue.
Obviously he could have been better at the whole rescue thing if he had a weapon , and just didn't open the door and asked out loud "What's going on here!" just to find the room full of wardens and a giant Darkspawn.
But hey at least he's still alive and was not beaten to death so something turned out alright.Except that whole rescue the grandma thing.

Makes sense. That's why I like the forums to catch things I missed; wasn't paying enough attention to; didn't consider as an explanation at the time; or sometimes just forgot about with all the fun little details in a big big game like DAI.
I like this part of the DAI story even better after hearing other peoples take on how they played it.
Thanks!
