Because why can't I?

I've spent the money to get the digital collectors when the game came out, why can't I pay the difference to get the bonuses from the GOTY edition?

It is cheaper for me to purchase the difference between the digital collectors and the GOTY edition than it is to buy both outstanding DLC packs as I am in Australia. The Descent and Trespasser are both $24.99, please just let me upgrade my game to GOTY.

Discuss.

GOTY always work like that. You paid the premium price to get it before a certain date. That's how it is. If you can't wait around for the GOTY edition, then tough. You paid to have it by a particular time. GOTY are basically the 'sales' pack of games because the high profit period is over and thus the value of the commodity has depreciated so in order for it to be sexy to a consumer, you make huge packs. It's how I got into Fallout. It looked awful to me, then the GOTY came out which had a whole bunch of stuff, so I bought it and now I'm over 500 hours in. GOTY is like dressing a game up in lingerie, it's sexier, dirtier, and I'm drunk right now, apologies.

But I understand, as a fellow inhabitant of Kangaroo land, Origins loves to overcharge us based on demographics. You can be a sneaking willy like me and get a VPN like PIA and by it with a US IP for the US price of $20-ish. I ended up paying $21 for Descent, a wonderful $4 saving!

Or you know, just buy the GOTY edition and maybe gift the main game key (if Origin keys even work like that, I don't know, I bend over for Steam) to someone else. I mean, sure it's $90 (on the Australian one, seriously, VPN and you could save like $10) but buying the DLC separately is already going to cost you $70-80

Not all GOTY editions work like that. You can find several games on Steam where there is an upgrade option. Deus Ex: HR didn't offer an upgrade, but they gave you a discount on the "Director's Cut" if you already owned the original game.

When a game is a commercial success, it is because people buy it when it comes out. The usual way of "milking" a game is to decrease the price as time goes by, or to propose packs. But for games like Dragon Age with dedicated player bases, it's a bit hit-and-miss. You have fans who will be willing to buy the game twice. But you also have those who consider they already supported the game when they originally bought it and feel a bit cheated when all the additional content is only 20€ more than the base game when they have to pay 55€ more than what they already paid to get these.

It's like phone carriers in my country: they're always targeting new customers. They don't care about their own...

Also, I must confess I'm really bitter because I never could buy DAO Ultimate Edition in the first place because they just don't sell it in France. I hate all those DLCs. It feels like you don't have the full experience. Damn, I even hate Sebastian Vael and Kasumi Goto althoug I never played with them.

That is true, but that came at the cost of the publisher of the game. When the GOTY edition of Deus Ex: HR came out, the game only cost $10 so they aren't losing out by much. DA:I on the other hand is around $50.

This is similar to the game destiny where the DLC cost a lot and you get a premium if you buy the game and DLC new. I can't remember the discussion much so I'll just link FunHaus's video, I think it's this video:

And I do completely understand the feeling cheated. It's like we are being punished for buying a game early by making us pay a premium. But here's the thing, if the game wasn't such a success during launch, then we wouldn't have the GOTY, just maybe very cheap Steam keys when Newell rains down the discounts or Humble Bundling.

We are all Grey Wardens fighting the Archdemon, my friends. Our sacrifice meant that some random person someone gets a cheap GOTY edition. Praise be to Andraste.

There's a thread discussing the very same thing in the first page:
