I read that completing the quest makes me support vivienne? Does that mean shes guaranteed to be the divine or just a point increase for her? if so about how many points does anyone know? i don't see anything about it here http://dragonage.wik...Divine_election

In my playthrough I completed Favors the First Enchanter and still got Leliana as Divine, so it's just a point increase and not a lock-in. All my major choices supported Leliana, never supported anyone else on the war table.

I've always done this quest with her in all playtroughs, and i've gotten her as Divine 1/7 times. Even when I actually tried to get her twice, I only got her once.

Trully the divine election is yet somewhat misterious. The wiki doesn't fully explains the system as it says "sometimes the wrong divine is elected" meaning they still do not know what other actions contribute towards a candidacy.

Make sure you don't say 'mages should be more involved with the chantry' to her at any point.  Siding with the mages and allowing Briala to have power (don't know if it's just through Gaspard or if her and Celene works too) will give you massive points towards having Leliana as Divine.  Also, don't bring up the subject of a mage becoming Divine with Viv at any point.

 

I did that quest on my first playthrough and got Leliana.

Ally with the mages and choose Briala to rule in Orlais will pretty much lock in Leliana as divine as long as you are consistent in your views with everyone you speak to.    If you go around saying you will support Vivienne as divine just to win approval points with her than it gets murky.  

 

I honestly believe that the only people that had trouble getting the divine that should have worked best for them were the ones who basically said what everyone they spoke to wanted to hear for the approval points.

A converstation without Viv dropping at least three Greatly Disapproves is just a wasted converstation.

No quest alone decides who is the divine since I always do all quests and each playthrough is a diferent divine. However it is important to notice one thing if you want Leliana (every time I want her I do it and it always works), support mages, do not support Viviene or Cassandra, not in conversation, nor in wartable missions. But if you want to be sure follow the wikia AND use the save editor to check each candidate points so that you know you are on the right track (or even to cheat if you really need to).

If you want to have Vivienne as Divine, do the following. Else, do the complete opposite (risking to losing her friendship). I do it in this manner for it's easyer to say what causes her to be Divine. Of course, if you are unhappy with what happens, you can always just go to the Dragon Age Keep and unlock spoilers, then set anyone as Divine for any future titles.

-Conscript the mages (or ally the templars and then discourage Cassandra at any point you can).

-Tell her that you think mages should be allowed into the chantry after you complete Champions of the Just or In Hushed Whispers.

-Ask her about what is her standard for The Divine when she mentiond you musn't appear a commoner in Skyhold.

-Have Celene alive (if possible, use your high cort approvak to ask her to spare Gaspard's life). Note that having Celene dead will practically ruin her chances as Divine if you did not conscript the mages.

-Use the nobility knowledge perk to support her in private dialogue after Wicked Eyes and Wicked Hearts. Then do the subsequent war table operation.

-Exile the wardens at Adamant.

-It is rumored you sould drink from the Well of Sorrows but i do not believe that, because ultimately, all 3 candidates would wish you to drink from it (unless you have Cassandra rommanced).

i've done the quest in all my playthroughs but never had viv as divine. got leliana as divine, who I really wanted. you have to watch what you say around her though to net approval and not disproval.

 

also I tend to ally with mages and the grey wardens, and have celene and briala ruling together.
