Should BW start with a clean slate next game with no returning characters? The very last words of the Inquisitor were along the lines of finding people Solas does not know so it would fit well with that I think. I think starting completely fresh would be the best way to go about it. Even Scout Harding, who is nice, is a bit boring and though a cameo might be nice, a completely new dwarf character would be best. Cameos are fine but returning companions need not apply. Create new ones, more interesting ones, compelling ones.
Completely New Companions Next Game?

I like the system they have going now, 1 returning, the rest are new. If they are going to the Tevinter Imperium i think its all set up for Dorian to make a return, though possibly as an NPC rather than companion, but he seems the most obvious choice.

I've always hated all the cameos and returning companions. Returning companions are great if the game keeps the same protagonist like Mass Effect, but make no sense when it's set in a different country with a new protagonist. DA:I was ridiculous about shoehorning people in from previous books, games, etc...You had Varric, Cassandra, Leliana, Cullen, Cole, Dagna, Fiona, Morrigan, Flemeth, Alistair, Loghain, Stroud, Hawke, Celine, Gaspard, Briala, Corypheus, Connor, Teagan, Cyril Prosper, I probably missed some but holy crap that's excessive! It felt like there were more returning characters than new ones.

Only exception that makes me disagree with all new companions is Varric.
I don't think I can ever get sick of Varric.
Ever.

If DA4 is going to be set primarily in Tevinter, then for the sake of continuity Dorian needs to be around. Does he need to be a companion? No, he could be an adviser.
As to the rest? It would depend on how the story is presented. These others are from south Thedas. I could see having Scout Harding return, but only if they have the romance so many want. Varric would be OK too. I don't see it with the others, at least not yet.

I want Sera back.
But all things considered, I don't want her too close. Solas knows how she operates.
When Pride has been dealt with, you're NOT stopping me and all the "BRING BACK SERA" banners.

I'm of the opinion that the next game should have a completely new protagonist and a completely new cast of companions, with no hold overs.
I'm not opposed to companions returning as major NPC's, but I don't think any of them should be in our party.

Good luck avoiding the Inquisitor and Dorian. Likely Fenris. The Divine is nearly a given.
Cassandra also seemed like she'd be around.
Also, Harding. Rector. Charter. Leliana's three "heirs"...

So long as they're all NPC's, I'm fine with it.
If they're party members, I either won't recruit them, or I'll never use them and just pretend they don't exist.

Yep, this next game seems to be following on from inquisition very directly, much more so than past sequels. It makes much more sense to have returning characters this time.

Dorian will most likely return. Even if you kicked him out in DAI he will always come back as the Ambassador in Trespasser. He's going to probably play a key role as a valued NPC in DA4. As for companions, I see Spirit Cole returning because of Solas. That's about it. Everyone else should be new. Your Inquisitor and Solas are no doubt going to be in it too. Only companion I see is Cole for a bit and the Inquisitor, but everyone else being new would be nice.
Interesting thing to note though in the Keep. Bull being killed or not betraying you is a specific tile option.

I don't want returning companions as full-time companions again a la Varric, as I think it didn't work so well (for me). I missed the Hawke/Varric dynamic too much, and he just seemed mopey for most of the game with my Inquisitor. Bringing in smaller characters as full-time companions, though, like (for example) Scout Harding, is interesting.
However, I love our past companions coming back as cameos or story relevant NPCs a la Morrigan and Leliana. As others have said, I expect Dorian to be the most likely candidate for a DA4 appearance - and he has a direct link to our Quizzie's via the communicator amulet. With that in mind, and since I really liked Hawke's involvement in DA:I, I hope they can work in something similar for our Quizzie's in DA:4...but perhaps a little bit like The Witcher 3, where we can actually control them as a secondary protagonist for certain segments? I think it's important to have control of them when we meet up with Solas, anyways.

I wouldn't be opposed to an NPC like Harding returning as a companion, or a companion like Dorian returning as an NPC.
I want the new to vastly outnumber the returning, however.

My problem is that I don't know what scale and sense of urgency the next game will have.
If it is an ME3-esque "last assault on the true big bad", than I would be very disappointed if they even brought another protagonist, let alone pick up more random bandits from the street to save the world; for some reason yet again over the roster of demigod-hero-legends we have amassed thus far.
If it is set more quietly, as in the Inquisition remnants' plot simmering more discretely and longwinded; then I'm all for a whole new character, and a whole new cast to keep it interesting and make the "getting there" a true process again - hence, no carryovers whatsoever.

I honestly don't think the next game will be focused on the Inquisitor or whatever was left of the Inquisition. They will probably play a role similar to Hawke did in DA:I.
Regardless, I really hope Sera comes back. Dorian will be there for sure, but I hope as just NPC or an advisor at best.
I would also love to see Oghren and Sigrun, if anything just to find out what happened to the Warden group of Awakening.

If characters must return (and I really prefer they not) please don't have them as companions. =/

Cassandra, Isabela and Merrill were all npcs who became companions in the next game. Leliana and Morrigan were companions who became npcs.
I liked both of these better than I liked having a companion return as a companion (Anders and Varric).
So I'd happily see Dorian became a major npc and Scout Harding and Calpernia become companions. But I'd be a lot less enthused about a DAI companion becoming a companion for the new protagonist.

If an already existing character is to become a companion, I vote for Maevaris

Pretty sure the game was set up to have Dorian be the perfect Segway companion character, the rest should (hopefully) all be new. Returning characters just bring too much baggage from game to game. Plus, there is only a couple out of this cast that was likeable enough to have a shot.
Iron Bull, Sera, Blackwall, Vivienne.... I see no reason to ever see them again. Varric has also grown stale and complacent.
Nope, a new cast is almost mandatory at this point. I could see maybe a scout Harding work though.

Totally clean slate, new everything, spending time re-introducing past characters and events just hinders game development, there's a titanic DA world to be explored, why do it via the same old characters again and again.
