I can hear almost nothing when an NPC talks, anyone know a patch or a way to fix this?

I agree, I have my speakers turned up and still barely able to hear the dialogue...unlike the music at menu screen which is blaring loudly.

Go to your control Panel in windows. Find your sound configuration and make sure you speakers are set correctly. If you are using stereo speakers or headphones with the setting at 5.1 or 7.1, the speech is very low compared to the music/effects.

I'm having the same issue. Occasionally the voices are fine, but most of the time they are so quiet that I either have to turn my volume way up or read the subtitles.

I'm getting a different audio issue. Dialogs are fine, but I don't have any background sound. Just had a cutscene with an explosion, and it was frustrating to hear noting, even with a 5.1 channel set....

Same problem here. It's like the NPCs are talking through a tin can or something (from the other side of the room). Are there no audio options to config besides the 3 sliders?

If you are still having issues you can try turning subtitles on as a work-around. I haven't installed ME 2 yet but I had this issue in ME 1 at one stage and I just turned the subtitles on.

I was having the same problem but i messed around with my settings. I was using 5.1 surround sound. Everything was at normal volume except the voices. Some where really low, others non existant. So i switched my sound settings to "Stero" and i can hear the voices fine now. But i guess i lost some of the surround sound.

I'm running sound off a Creative X-fi Xtreme Music card if that helps Bioware with solving the issue. Here's the top portion of my dxdiag, with the video and sound info if it helps:
