So if the reapers really wanted to win, they should've been built in the form of giant spheres. Imagine a fleet of Death Stars, only without the stupid vent.

The reapers would win regardless. Hackett just proved he had no idea what he was doing. Having those ships firing on Sovereign from behind would've caused less losses or maybe none at all. Hackett just wanted to say 'take down that monster no matter the cost'

Nah, he would have taken heavy losses no matter what strategy he used.

Well yeah, ship design in ME universe is rather idiotic, with huge "wings" and very inefficient design.

(Like the Destiny Ascension, what the hell is up with that giant hole in the middle? It's obviously not a weapon, and the ship is a dreadnaought, not a carrier.)

The Reapers are the least affected by it, because their dreadnaughts can menuever better than cruisers, are speedier than frigates, can take incredible amount of damage, and can simply ram other ships.

The only way he would take losses is if Sovereign unhooked itself from the Citadel tower, turn around and fire at the fleet

That's just Bioware tactical brilliance at work...

Sovereign would find a way.

It's not Art unless it's a "bittersweet" victory

Butt laser.

Anyway I think people put way too much stock into a cinematic scene bring sn accurate tactical depiction.

Having a victory doesn't mean taking unnecessary losses. It just makes the leader a poor leader and nobody would want to be under his/her command

The thing is, the turians actually took advantage of that feature in the Battle of Palaven where Admiral Irix Coranati ftl-jumped his fleet into the middle of the Reaper formation and unloaded on them before the Reapers could turn to bring their main guns to bear.

Of course, the Reapers responded with MOAR REAPERS.

I like what the Turians did against the reapers in that battle. What I would've had them do  is to continue there attack like they did to destroy those capital ships instead of helping defend their planet

If I was, I would've included a mission to darkspace

Well, to be fair, no one had seen a Reaper before, knew where his weak points are and the points of access into the inside of the Citadel were rather limited. For all they knew, the butt end could have been bristling with weapons, if they actually got the intel from Joker that the tentacly end is forward and not just the aft landing gear. And as far as they knew time was very scarce to do fine maneuvering with a whole fleet inside a civilian station.

Where in the detached vastness of darkspace, the domain of countless mecha-Cthulhu with superior firepower, are we supposedly going? What do we hope to accomplish there, if we can actually overcome the endless demands of the traveling? Or are we just gonna show up on their doorstep?

You remember how I said Shepard never should have made it out of the Sol system?

Yep. Bio retconned the Reapers' strength down enough for ME3 to be more like WW2 circa 1945 than like the U.S. vs. Grenada, but not enough for it to be anything but inevitable defeat.

I do. You remember how I said the Reapers' adjusted attack strategy in ME3 had its benefits?

Actually, I think you could contrive something here. Use the Citadel relay to get there. Sure, it requires grossly inadequate Reaper security, but anyone who makes it to the end of ME1 has proven that he can swallow that.

How about a hilarious anticlimax where dozens of sleeping Reapers are picked off without knowing what hit them?

And they just ... sit there and get defeated?

The more alternative ideas I hear, the better I think ME3 actually played out.

The idea, or at least my idea, is that the final battle is fought on two fronts. The fleet of the galactic alliance against the Reapers near the Citadel, and then Shepard and the Normandy crew enter through an ancient hidden relay that takes them to a weird never before seen place that's linked to the Reapers and in stopping them.

They could've easily had written that the Reapers don't just literally chill out for 50k years in some random empty area in dark space, but instead do have some sort of base of operations or meeting ground that's out there. Even though the movie sucked, think the Machine City in the Matrix. Doesn't have to be exactly like that, but just the idea. There would've been great potential for level design, storytelling, final boss, and a satisfying final mission worth of the entire trilogy. And yes, that "base" would've been colossally huge and terrifying.

Instead we got a few fire fights on the streets of London while we hear everyone on the radio going "Ahhh the humanity! We're dying by the bajillions, the Reapers are invincible!"

The only reason why ME3 played out the way it did was because the reapers were made stupid

Propaganda.

Why would the Reapers reveal their actual fleet strength?
