It is subjective but I found Champions of the just to be superior in both game-play and story than hushed whispers, with its themes of deception, redemption and duty.

It even has some investigation you can do where you find out the Head of the Templar order the Knight-Vigilant didn't die at the conclave but was murdered as it turns out because he would have seen the envy demon for what it truly was which raises the possibility that any other Templar leaders who survived might have also been murdered because they would have seen the envy demon for what it truly was.

Champions of the Just.

In Hushed Whispers is a snooze fest. Yay more rift closing. Just what I needed.

The mage quest seems more urgent to deal with and has more entertaining characters, imo. Alexius was an interesting villain, Dorian is always great and Leliana's and your companions' fate really got me. The templar side is rather underwhelming in comparison.

Both are OK, I think I prefer doing Champions of the Just a little more. I'll say that I think siding with the templars fits more organically into the main story, especially with the next quest. Ironically I think In Hushed Whispers having a much stronger set up works in favor of doing Champions of the Just because the story still flows well even if you don't do the mage recruitment mission.

I find In Hushed Whispers to be waaaaaaay more fun and thrilling than Champions of the Just. The only real fault I have with it is gimmicky "time-magic".

I may get a lot of hate for this, but I really didn't like Champions of the Just. Terrible writing and annoying characters. The only thing I liked about that quest was helping the Templars defend the Great Hall did feel pretty epic. Envy was also a moderately challenging boss fight so that's another plus.

Otherwise, Mage's quest by far. No question here.

As  I noted very subjective, people tend to prefer one or the other to various degrees, to me hush whispers was vastly inferior in everyday to champions of the just while others feel otherwise especially in the writing but I loath stories involving time travel and I enjoy stories about redemption something that isn't done nearly as much as its enough as it ought to be done. Different people have different views and tastes.

I'm still wondering how anybody got redemption from CotJ? All I got from that mission was a bunch of people trying to not get killed. How is self-preservation redemption?

The templars had been led astray from their purpose as champions against dark magic and demons. They had unwittingly allowed a demon into the ranks, who in turn corrupted their officers with red lyrium. You put them back on that path.

Blessed are the peacekeepers,

Champions of the Just.

how can one deliberately forfeit the chance to found the black templars? boggles the mind.

I think if there's one consensus here, it's that you should play both and make up your own mind as to which you prefer instead of asking the BSN.

I think it heavily depends on the individual's preferences, OP.

That said, I prefer CotJ.
Because Abernach needs to pair with Chief Movran. Forever

Cullen: "So Chief Movran is giving Abernach cultural lessons? I'd pay to see that :D " (paraphrasing)
I supposed by then Cullen knew that his girl has a mean streak to her beneath that benevolent mask

Personally, i strongly dislike timed missions, so for me mages are no-brainer.

I found the templar one pretty annoying in parts and enjoyed the time travel plot with Alexius/Felix/Dorian. But i do really like Barris and Calpernia.

Hushed wispers, but I still prefer the Templar route.

1) Time travel hurts my senses

2) Barris

3) Calpernia

4) It makes more sense to trust Cole, coming from this narrative

Both paths clearly have their fans.  Personally I perfer Hushed Whisper (in spite of the cliched time magic angle).  What's more, Hushed Whispers makes more thematic sense (at least to me) and I'd be very suprised if that path didn't eventually wind up being the default and/or canonical path.

Why?  When you go to Val Royaleux for the first time, you get no indication that you'll have any opening at all with the Templars.  In fact (what you think is) the Lord Seeker treats you with the grace and politeness due to a gnat.  You get the idea (if you listen to Cassandra) that there is something terribly wrong with this, but it doesn't scream EMERGENCY nor do you really seem to have a good wedge for a negationation to close the breech.

OTOH, just as you leave the Grand Enchanter, herself, at great personal risk (Solas will mention this) gives you a personal invitation to Redcliff to at least discuss how to close the breech and how the rebel magi might help with this.  She goes out of her way to be inviting and gracious (quite unlike the Lord Seeker).

Given the two options, I think that a fair minded person would logically go to Redcliff next since that's the obvious opening and at least see what terms the rebel mages are looking for (with the idea that if they are too onerous, you approach the Templars instead).  Once you get to Redcliff and find out that a hostile Tevinter magister with universe threatening magic is now not only controlling the rebel mages but also has effective control of Redcliff, this IS a bona-fide EMERGENCY and I don't see how a reasonable person doesn't make that a priority at that point.

Champions of the Just easily, not a fan of tired time travel gimmicks.

I think the story flows more naturally with In Hushed Whispers - as IanPolaris already said a few posts above. As a personal preference, I also like it better thematically since my main Inquisitor actually does aspire to more-than-human powers, and the story makes for a nice cautionary tale about going off the deep end on the way there. Meanwhile, I remain untouched by what the envy demon shows me.

The flipside, unfortunately, is that I like Calpernia and her quest "Under Her Skin" is so much better than the alternative. There's so much fascinating lore bound up in that very short quest,

So I ended up with two Inquisitors who allied with the mages and two who allied with the templars. No conscription in either case.

I prefered the mage quest.

It got me all thinking about whether Leliana was right to stay in the present, and try and save the timeline she was in?

Were Dorian and you a cowared escaping into the past of a more pleasent timeline and abanding the one that needed you?

Or were they fixing the present by moving back in time in the same timeline; I can never get that theory to work in my mind.

Anyway I found it the most enjoyable quest in the game.

As for fun, I have to go with the Templar mission.    Nothing too exciting in the Mage mission design.    At least Champions of the Just had some challenge to it.   Also not a fan of the whole time travelling twist.

That said, I run the Mage quest far more often as it really sort of the choice most of my characters would make.   Siding with the Templars just feels dirty.

Like others, I prefer the mage freedom storyline, but found the pro-Templar line to be a better story.  I'm glad my first run was pro-Templar, because "Under Her Skin" gets you a more interesting lieutenant - and a more interesting Corypheus.  Reading our archvillain's private thoughts humanized the enemy in a really interesting, really BioWare way.  And Calpernia beats Samson for interesting villains.

That said, my "canon" run is pro-mage, because that's the kind of world I would like to make.

As for the quests themselves, I found Champions of the Just's timed element to be more stressful than fun, and In Hushed Whispers' environment to be more visually interesting.  The Fade sequence in champions was pretty neat though.

I think the envy demon is a tougher boss than Alexius.  So if you like a challenge, have at Envy.  That said, I hate the timed aspect of CotJ.  In terms of Berris vs Fiona, you can get war table missions in regard to both Berris and some magey issues depending on your choices (like How Could You if you ally with the mages and make a certain mage tranquil in judgement) but Berris's never popped up on my one Templar conscription PT.  I'm also personally not a fan of Cole so having him before Dorian is not a plus point for me.  Team Dorian for life here.  I'm also adamantly pro-mage and play generally as a mage so that colors my opinion.  The obvious choice is to make two opposite personalitied inquisitors and play both missions at least once to get a feel for how you like things to shake out. :)

You only get the barris line if you ally with the templars, not conscript.

I really insist that everyone do BOTH questlines at least once.  They are both interesting.

Personally, I preffer In Hushed Whispers.  But I did enjoy my runthru of Champions of the Just.

Then again, I'm typically a Mage, so I might be just a triffle biased.

Envy was more interesting than Alexius, and extra Cole is fun, but overall, I prefer Hushed Whispers for everything else.  I don't have to kill Fiona, I save the mages, I get Samson, and the bad future story just has more impact.  Cole showing up at the gates of Haven and his role during that feels more natural than Dorian in the same place.

See I thought Dorian (especially if you talked to him beforehand) showing up made far more sense and felt more natural. Cole's appearance felt random as hell when it happened. And I much rather deal with Barris than Fiona and Calpernia than Samson. (Also helps that I can skip a boss battle. An easy one but still). Plus Calpernia makes far more sense as the vessel than Samson ever will. ANd really the whole going against an ancient tevinter magister with his crazy mage army with an army of the faithful made up with templars and the like just feels more right.

Especially if you take that Herald of Andraste title and run with it. XD

I think Dorian needed to do more to gain the Inquisition's trust than Cole did, given how the main antagonist is an old Tevinter magister with a Tevinter cult, trying to uplift Tevinter.  Cole suddenly appearing and being mysterious fits Cole.  He also takes care of that dying guy, which suits him.  Barris really knows how to drink lyrium, but I like Fiona and I love my lore continuity.  (Having to kill her when I did CotJ was just a big NOPE moment.)  I also like Samson more than Calpernia, and makes as much sense to be the Vessel.  It makes sense that Corypheus would choose someone resistant to the Blight and difficult to kill.  I'm also glad it's possible to redeem Samson without his death being necessary.  His parallels with Cullen are also interesting.  And again, that sweet, sweet continuity.

I prefer to play elves, and particularly elf mages, so they generally aren't pleased with the whole Herald of Andraste thing.  The only ones I have who accept the title are an elf rogue (who doesn't believe a bit of it but is willing to use it) and an Andrastian Qunari (who still took the Whispers path cuz mage and cuz Dorian).
