Who was the stronger swordsman? Never read about these two in anything other than what is provided in the games, but they are two of my favorite characters. What do you all think? Had Duncan survived Ostagar and made it to the Landsmeet, who would win that duel?

Duncan would probably be the stronger swordsman in the sense that he was at the peak of his fighting form while Loghain's days as a frontline fighter were behind him unless he's drafted.  But Loghain has better equipment in the duel than Duncan did at the start of the game.  It makes a difference particularly for a sword and board champion up against a duel-wielding rogue.  Let Duncan accumulate the equipment that a Warden protagonist can over the course of the game, and he'll tear Loghain a new one.

It'd have been fun if Duncan had stayed alive in Ostagar. See the story from his perspective.

I see more Loghain as a Tank, and Duncan as a Rogue, so they have a different style. In the video game "Heroes of Dragon Age", they are around the same power, Loghain has a two-handed sword and a lot of stamina and health, great defense, and Duncan would be faster, with two smaller swords... so I would say that if Duncan can pierce through Loghain's defense and stab him in the back, he would win, but it wouldn't be easy, the two-handed sword of Loghain could cut him in half.

So I guess that this topic is a bit pointless.

They're both pretty awful Tanks, which is something you don't really find out until you design your own sword and shield warrior. Duncan could take on the two of them together and beat them fairly easily.

At least on console that's the case. It might be different if you can respec both Alistair and Loghain.

I love how people say "this topic is pointless" and still fee the need to post.

Yes because I always post in topics involving Loghain. Pointless or not.

Agreed. Duncan's actually been out in the field fighting actual opponents for years, while Loghain has been lounging in his castle and sitting at the back of the field sending soldiers to die in his stead for years.

The thing about equipment is, you're not born with it, nor is it stuck to  you like a second skin. If Duncan and Loghain were given equal quality equipment to duel, Duncan is still the superior swordsman (the man felled an ogre single-handedly, for crying out loud) so he would win.

I don't even know their classes.. Loghain is rogue-ish in the books. And a good archer. Duncan is a thief and rogue, but apparently moved to heavier armor like Loghain in the games. And even owns a shield. Then in DA2, they gave Loghain rogue armor again with that DLC set.

I'm guessing Loghain could kick his ass though.

Well, Loghain does exactly the SAME move when you have him in your team and fight with ogres. He does the solo-kill of ogres by jumping on their chest and put a blade through it. With his havy armor. So....

I think Chiara is referring to combat (Story) vs gameplay (Finishing move).  Duncan takes the ogre down 'singlehandedly for story purposes'.  First time I saw the ogre kill finishing move, Alistair (who got it on the tower ogre in the fight my very first run through) took it down.  Imagine my disappointment to learn later it's a random 'once in a while' thing, not an every time thing.

Personally, I think both are capable warriors, with different styles. Hard to say who would win in a duel.

- Sylvanaerie: yes I see what you mean, in my game the one who took down the ogre in the tower that way was some random soldier, hahaha

Duncan, you're not original, everyone can do this!  :P

- Aren: that's right. And I think that Loghain doesn't stay on a horse all day just giving orders, he's training and fighting too. He was quite tought at the Landsmeet.

Random soldier did it once too on another playthrough I had!  After that I started making my mage a sword and shield wielding Arcane Warrior so i could get the animation too.  Used the "more frequent deathblows" mod to get it more often.

*Edit* Chiara's point (which I can't tell if you're deliberately ignoring or not) is that for story purposes, Duncan fells an ogre on his own.  For gameplay purposes, anyone can have the killing blow, but Loghain, Alistair or random soldier didn't fell the creature on his own and it was done as part of the game play, not for a story point.

@ Chiara: Despite Loghain being a general, he didn't sit on his ass in his castle directing traffic.  At the least he probably spars daily to stay in fighting trim, and I'm sure he saw plenty of action in Ostagar prior to the fiasco that gets the king, the wardens and a crap ton of soldiers killed.

Well that's an overstatement.  Loghain is a fighting general.  There just haven't been that many wars for him to fight in the last while.

He was involved in many fights just before that battle in Ostagar, and was there every time, and I don't think he was sitting far away doing nothing.

And it needs training to wear that heavy armor and fight at the same time, he must be training too.
