One of my favorite game challenges of all time is the Straight Character Challenge in Final Fantasy Tactics, where you intentionally limited yourself to only a single class in your party.

Dragon Age: Inquisition now has a really nice level of customizeable difficulty, with difficulty settings as well as the toggleable trials, but what about more intentional self-limitations?  One tree per character, or specializations only?

Do you think any one tree would be absolutely incapable of functioning on its own?  Which trees would be the easiest?

What about a thematic, roleplaying type of challenge?

Vivienne: Frost

Dorian: Inferno

Solas: Spirit

Cassandra: SnS

Iron Bull: Two-Handed

Blackwall: Vanguard

Varric: Archery

Sera: Sabotage

Cole: Stealth

Plus their specialization, of course.

Would you want to exploit crafting to make up for weaknesses, like giving Blackwall stacks of Hidden Blades to make up for the poor damage of Vanguard/Champion, or giving Cole lots of Guard on Hit to protect the fragile Stealth Assassin?  Or would you rather limit crafting thematically as well, only giving Guard to tanks, Shield Bash to Cassandra, Walking Bomb to Dorian, etc?  Or limiting the appropriate staves to the appropriate character?

All I need is combat roll and a barrier amulet.

The mage Spirit tree is pretty clearly the worst of all. I'd say any mage tree is pretty bad, excluding specializations, because of resistances. Inferno is probably the most workable, but if you are up against a Rage Demon, what are going to hit it with? Your good looks?

On the other hand, each of the mage Specializations are self-sufficient, though KE is a bit handicapped without Fade Step.

Easiest is arguably Assassin, but they are all pretty close. Even Reaver is quite workable.

For easiest base tree, for now it's Battlemaster because of Combat Roll, but ignoring that, probably Archery, but arguably any of the Warrior or Rogue ones.

Sure, crafted items and FT Masterworks should stay within theme.

I can't agree with your tree assignments, though. I'd go something like this:

Vivienne: Winter
Dorian: Storm
Solas: Inferno
Cassandra: SnS
Iron Bull: Two-Handed
Blackwall: Battlemaster (give him Combat Roll or he's got nothing)
Varric: Sabotage
Sera: Archery or Double Daggers
Cole: Subterfuge
