I'd wouldn't mind having a scene where everyone's translator breaks. If anyone seen Green Lantern: The Animated Series, I loved the scene where Hal, Razer, and Kilowog couldn't understand each other. Razer was able to translate, but he too eventually couldn't understand Hal or Kilowog. Best episode in my opinion.

The universal translator works for what it is, though it would be nice to have the new Andromeda species (plural) upon first contact be unable to verbally communicate with the cast because their language is unregistered. That and a scene where it breaks down could be pretty funny if done properly.

That being said the translator working like a subtitle system on your hud might have been interesting. Have a handful of quirks where a simple word like Xgrfsf in length translates to something like. By the honor of my forefathers I pledge my life to destroying you and all your kin, making sure your genetic heritage is scoured from the universe. Or the reverse where a really long statement translated to, No.

This maybe works in books. But even TV like say stargate after like the 2nd episode no matter what culture the human natives are from thy speak English.

Maybe because of anime where 80+% of the time the native voice actors are better but I'm cool with it. Though I do know of s lot of people who won't do subtitles. So my suggestion would likely fail hard for them. Or maybe open their eyes(."kjd ja aksdi akhsdiuasd SKDJ!"

This is usually done by some unexplainable technology that allows those things to be overlooked.
You can't be a stickler for realism in science fiction. It just doesn't work. Most of everything you see isn't realistic.

Not really. It's mostly today's understanding of various scientific disciplines and projected to future evolutions / development.
Examples: radio, tv, phone, underwater craft, men flying, walking on the moon, interplanetary travel, nano machines, computers... all unrealistic until they happen to be.
Most of everything you see isn't realistic
Of course, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was science fiction and unrealistic in its heyday.

One of the books if I remember correctly said that the lingua franca for Council space was a language called Galactic.
Probably none of the characters from a story perspective are speaking English. We just hear it as English because space magicky universal translators, and no one wants to hear characters spouting fictional alien gibberish for 30 to 60 hours of gameplay, so even if the characters are supposed to be speaking Galactic, we hear their Galactic dialogue as English.
Its sort of like when you watch a Hollywood movie set in Ancient Rome. The characters are supposed to be speaking Latin from an in universe perspective. English dialogue is just delivered as a stand in for Latin so the audience can understand what is being said without needing to read subtitles.

I'd like it if we had some first contact situations where the universal translator didn't work. It'd fit with the exploration theme.
I'm wondering whether they'll bother explaining why the Milky Way colonists and the Andromeda natives can understand each other.

What about going to the way KotOR handled some of the non-human races? Gibberish audio and a translation on your HUD. It'd save VO money.
Please no, I tolerate it in SWTOR because it's starwarsey but it gets old hearing all the twileks going wampa wompa wampa wompa all the time. I don't know that this language thing is at all a problem that needs to be looked at.

Yes the explanation is flimsy but does anyone really wanna play charades with aliens? This kind of communication barrier and overcoming it might work in a book or tv or something but not in a game. Unless there's like an early quest where you need to get X amount of dialogue snippets from new aliens so that the omnitool can compile a translation script. Yay collections! Wouldn't that just be dandy.
You're being sarcastic but as mindless XP farming side quests go I'd take it over catch the pyjak.
It's lore relevant at least.

Star Wars tends to be really good at embracing the notion that a galactic civilisation would need people to know several languages, or at least least capable of understanding them so both parties can speak in their native tongues and comprehend each other.
KOTOR made it a nice plotpoint a couple times that some of the characters couldn't understand some of the various alien languages they encountered, which required Revan to serve as the resident translator, since they were a skilled polyglot.
(And that's one of the main reasons I love Revan as a character, it's extremely satisfying to play a protagonist who's that intelligent)

As cool as it is to be realistic, it's tedious to listen to Aliens... see Kotor. At least for me, I just wanted to skip their VO after the charm wore off.
