According to everything I've read, the Venatori tomes that I need to unlock Rift Mage can be found on the Exalted Plains. Just finished the Exalted Plains and the only Venatori present were the ones that spawn for Dorian's quest. None of them dropped any tomes. So. Fine. I go to the Western Approach since Venatori seem to spawn there more regularly. Been running back and forth for an hour fighting Venatori. Still no tomes. So.....? Bug? Extremely bad luck? Wrong location??

they should be plenty in western approach in that temple just north west from the first camp with the frozen in time rift.

Make sure you talked to your rift mentor though at skyhold to initialize the quest.

Also, the guaranteed drops have special names. Venatori riftbinder i believe. one is near the camp close to the bank on the upper left side of the map and another one is close to the camp that needs a wartable operation to unlock.

I recently did this (after the latest patch) and had no trouble.  But I did kill the 3 specific enemies that ONLY spawn when you are a mage.

Note that one of them requires you to unlock a blocked off area with a war mission.

if you have The Short List perk, the tomes may be found for sale in the Griffon Wing Keep merchant inventory.

Yeah, but who has that at level 7, when most people are unlocking their specialization?

Not me, but was interesting to note this when I read about others using this option.

I rarely unlock mine until level 12+.  But I don't rush Skyhold either.  I take my time.

After much pain and suffering I finally got three tomes. I had to repeatedly leave/return to the Exalted Plains before the tome-droppping enemies would even spawn. What a pain in the a...pple.

I get most in WA, only one in EP, on Dorian's quest. Other two from WA. I have gotten one in Hinterlands on Dorian's quest as well but, usually I have them before that.
