If you are a mage, you can counter other mages with various spells. If you're a warrior, you can get the Templar specialization to counter mages. But what of rogues? What can they do to protect themselves from enemy mages aside from using Duomer runes? I'm playing as a dual wield/archer rogue and feel as if my character is frequently the weakest one in any party. (To beef my rogue up, I equip her with grenades and I use the "dog as the fifth companion" mod.) Any options I may have missed?

You have the means to approach a mage safely (Stealth), stun them (Riposte, Dirty Fighting) and dispatch them quickly (Backstabs).
Paralyse Runes are far better than Duomer Runes as they can ensure a target stays immobile and Fleshrot poison can keep a target stunned.

Thanks for the advice! I'll have to seek out more of the paralyze runes.

Once you get 4th on the bard tree, captivating song, and get scattershot, you will have a great control ability. When I play as a rogue, I start with melee and turns into an archer as soon as I get Zev. Life as a rogue is really hard in the beginning and life as an archer sucks even more until you get the crowd control abilities. Once I took Solis from Carma companions mods, respecialized him as an archer and took him to the Dalish campaign (I didn't take Leliana because she gets upset when I choose an option to kill the werewolves and Whitefang). Anyway, I made him sing the captivating song near the door where you get ambushed by werewolves and shadow wolves and between that and my blood mage's blood wound and sleep, Zevran had a field day.
The song however doesn't work in any kind of boss fight.
Anyway when I want to kill enemy mages before my mages learn mana clash, I poison Zev's weapon and send in Zev. Battle stealth - bomb - if undetected, another bomb, if still undetected, just hit as it's critical, followed by dirty figting. Usually gets the job done. You could try the tactic.

I played an Archer Rogue in my last playthrough and used arrow of slaying to neutralise a mage (mostly at the beginning of a battle: Stealth and then AoS with aim and Song of courage active for bonusses). Normally after AoS and one or two more shots, the mages were dead. If there were two or more mages, I used scattershot - gives the other party members time enough to finish them before they awake from the stun.

You can also find Andraste's Arrows (interrupt spellcasting) around Haven, and don't forget about the Magebane poison recipe either.
