This was a troubling trend in the trilogy and I hope it's something that we won't see again in the new games. As someone who only romanced Kelly, Diana and Jacob, I was very disappointed at how they were treated and I'm wary of getting invested in any new romance option in case they get the same treatment. Me and Shepard deserved better than to get blueballed/ovaried like this.

You exclusively romanced boring, throwaway characters. Get better taste and you might not face this problem in the future.

Well, I agree. Not much about Diana and Jacob, but Kelly was really someone special, and I felt sad to see her romance ending up in only a few lines, a black screen and a portrait (or a death, if you dont go renegade in one option).

Almost feels like they wanted to kill her somehow.

Anywho, I agree that some characters needed more development for that matter.

Please do abandon the next 'Shepard' after one game thus rendering such issues moot.

Auch, you did have quite unlucky choices. Kelly and Diana are bit of bonus romances (lack content compared to other romances) and Jacob is only LI that leaves you. But I guess it might be better for Bioware just to focus on main romances, no more flings and bonus ones that don't lead to anything.

I see this as being the best option, really. One protagonist, one game. Any romance arcs are contained to that game and are given satisfying resolutions that don't rely on them being stretched over a series.

What it has to do with MEA? We don't even know if it's another trilogy by now.

I'm actually completely ok with some romances being less involved and meaningful - at least with some characters. Diana and Kelly were relatively minor characters, so I have no problem with them. With Jacob it did kind of suck, it was realistic in some ways but still sucked.

I agree. Either make a full, well-developed romance, or don't add it.

I gotta disagree with the people saying the OP's choices sucked. Jacob and Kelly were good people in ME2, how were we suppose to know what would happen to them in ME3? I mean Kelly's romance was pretty minor, but for all we knew it may have gotten the kind of attention Samantha Traynor got in ME3. But instead she was tossed to the side. And nobody predicted Jacob would actually cheat on you and knock up some other woman.

As for Diana, well yeah not a good choice there, it was very obvious she was just shoved into the game for no good reason.

Kelly wasn't much of a romance option. More of a friends with benefits sort of thing, casual encounter and such. To drive that point home oddly enough my Shepard was considered still loyal to their Me1 LI after the Kelly Encounter. She is never brought  up. Or at least Liara never mentions it nor does Kelly for that matter.

Good thing I buy games for reasons other than romance, then.

Plus, I'm hoping ME:A offers those reasons a plenty. Romance wise?.. an exploratory bonus!

I think the solution is to not have a gazillion options. The Shepard trilogy had too many squadmates and varying relationship states to account for.

As much as I liked ME2, the completely new cast threw a wrench in the works and guaranteed that ME3 would have disappointing cameos for some of the potential squadmates.

I agree I think that was the problem as well. I think the system just needs refining that's all. By that I mean having the choices consistant across the trilogy rather than neccessarily throw in a new potential one in the last game. That's not to asy I didn't like Samantha Traynor's romance or anything like that because she was probably my favourite ME3 romance but I'm saying that just throwing them in there and not feeling as though there's any thing going with them dosen't really work with the story. Basically what I'm saying decide early on who's going to be romancible and stick with it for this trilogy assuming of course this is the start of a new trilogy in the series.

Kelly's romance is so inconsequential that not even the Illusive Man or Liara knew about it. Yet somehow, Kasumi knew lol. She probably watched.

Truth be told, Bioware abandoning romances would be career suicide.

I remember back when everyone pretended to be offended by Jacob cheating on you......then they'd go on making jokes about Shepard boning every piece of meat in the galaxy. Apparently it's only unforgivable when someone other than you is doing it...

Jacob cheating on Shepard was bad because he was one of the only options left for straight women to romance if they didn't like Kaiden. It was also bad because you could tell it was only done due to his low popularity.

My only gripe, albeit minor, was that it just had to be the only black dude on the ship to do it. Imagine the uproar if we got to Menae and found that Garrus coupled up with a turian female despite romancing Shepard. The rage would burn hotter than that orange blaze seen on Palaven XD
