Every time I hear the words "Avvar" and "Nightmare" in the same sentence, it's about how terrible he is, especially against Qunari.  This has always baffled me, because from my perspective, Qunari are a cake-walk with the Avvar.  All you need to know are what elements enemies are immune to and how to hide behind walls.

Here is a list of all the Qunari's invulnerabilities (that an Avvar would have to worry about):

  • Ben-Hassrath Agent:  None
  • Qunari Spearmen:  Ice
  • Ben-Hassrath Assassin: None
  • Qunari Shock Trooper:  Fire and Ice
  • Qunari Defender: Fire
  • Saarebas: None
  • Qunari Commander: None

As you can see, only two enemies are invulnerable to ice, and only two are invulnerable to fire, while nothing is invulnerable to electricity.  What should you take away from this?

  1. Lady's Wrath is your best friend!
  2. Don't waste Hakkon's Charge on Spearmen (unless you are just trying to go bowling) or Shock Troopers.
  3. Don't waste Crushing Leap on Defenders or Shock Troopers (unless there are plenty of other enemies around, like Spearmen, Agents, Assassins, etc.)

Without further ado...

Yeah, I know.  Most people can't do this because promotions and whatever, but that's what a team is for.  If I can easily solo Qunari with a level 12 Avvar on Nightmare (sorry, is my e-peen showing?), then obviously he can be helpful in a team environment.

P.S.  If you have an Amulet of Physical Immunity, you might want to equip it.

I recorded this on Proto's profile just after earning him the Amulet, and just before I salvaged it for him (there is such a thing as being too overpowered).

Gear:
Hakkon's Valor
Amulet of Physical Immunity
Superb Belt of Health
2X Superb Ring of Lifedrain

Stats:
201 Constitution
196 Willpower
196 Cunning

I have been preaching this since the beginning.

Edit: The Avvar being OP, not the Qunari thing.

To wave my e-dong around and impress people was not the point (entirely).  The point was, for the most part, to show that the Avvar is not gimped at all by the elemental resistances from Qunari.  Red Tramplers and Venatori are more of a problem when it comes to issues with elemental resistances.  Demons and Darkspawn are more of a problem when it comes to knockdown.  Truthfully, Qunari are probably the easiest faction to play an Avvar against.

Hence "Demonstration" and not "Speedrun".

Most of the time I tried to show use of cover and smarter-ish tactics than "I'm just gonna run in and nuke everything!"  I certainly could have done that, but that doesn't show how it can and should be done, only how quickly someone with high promotes can steamroll everything.  I don't know if you can tell, but this was actually a really laid-back run without much rush.  I mean, just look at my nice pleasant stroll through zone 2.

Electricity solves all.

I think if all I had to fight was qunari I'd even drop Crushing Leaping and switch it to Chilling Tremor.

You could also add that the shock trooper and the defender are weak to elec.

Rofl most people don't get this at all, the 'if I can do it, its useful for everyone', instead of 'its only doable because you have promotes accusation' that just get old. Try to learn something!

Avvar's great against Qunari, and it absolutely owns Perilous even without lots of promotes. Given Perilous is where people should be running this weekend for reward/time, it won't be long before someone gets those promotes that make NM easy.

You won't need it. Dragon Maul + Constitution + Heal on Kill. You'll kill and heal faster than you get damaged. It is only later that you swap it out for Critical chance, then critical bonus damage, after you get promoted. Eventually you'll get better weapons, but I'm fairly certain everyone that's been playing a while has a Dragon maul by now.

I can still take and deal significantly more damage than most people though.

I was thinking, maybe I should do future demonstrations with basic armor, or a berserk weapon... or both. I would take a serious hit to both DPS and EHP, bringing me more in line with the general populace.

What I really wish was possible is to put the elemental pact belts on warriors and rogues.

Also an option is to have allies faded out, rejoin and fade out again, until you feel like the enemies are doing enough damage to you. There's a limit, but it is really really high.

You could also try playing without heal on kill.

That was literally my first thought when I got a storm pact belt. Now I just want to do it for a challenge. Can you imagine how high stakes it would be to use a Reaver wearing one of those belts?

How do you kill bosses with Avvar?  Right now I have to Charge and Leap, run away to kill other stuff to regain health and try again.   I kind of do the same with Virtuoso.  Cold Beat and run away to kill other stuff.   Lady Wrath and Power Chord were great on the average joes, but just not killing the bosses fast enough before they kill me.   I don't have that problem with the Reaver and Lego.

The same way you do for everything else, mighty offense potion and good positioning / build / gear setup.

Yep.  In this video I didn't have the Mighty Offensive Tonic, but I just ran from cover to cover, killing the boss when he came at me with all the mooks.  One of the major rules when playing the Avvar is to never fight one-on-one if you don't have to.  I just slowly whittled him down with everyone else, being able to draw it out because of the healing from everything else dying around him.

Does mighty offense potion help much with 2-handers?  I think I read in one of the guide (could be yours) saying that the fixed +damage helps the most with staff (lowest damage) and not that much with 2-handers?   The dragon maul has 330 damage, so with the potion it would be about 18% extra damage?

Okay that's pretty much what I do except without the Tonic.   I am kind of a hoarder... been hoarding the potions. :P  I think I am up to about 100 each except for healing at 255 and jar of bee like 35....

It affects 2-handers the least, but still affects them. vs guard and barrier its actually far more than that 18% damage because of the 50% bonus damage to guard and barrier. Assuming you have no other guard / barrier bonus from strength / magic, it'll be up to...

( 330 + 58 ) x 1.5 / 330 = roughly 1.77x the damage you'd have otherwise. The demon commander is the only boss that doesn't have guard or barrier.

Staves are affected the most of course, but you want MOP on every boss killing DPS kit.

Consider it an investment. Potions average 50 gold per if you're buying mixed potions directly, and the boss fight is worth more than 100 gold. Your gold / time increases from both succeeding more often and reducing the time required to get more runs in.

Edited OP to add Heartbreaker "demonstration".
