horrible things

kill Leliana at the temple
kill the dwarf golem when I sided with Branka
left Sten in the cage
choose the werewolves over the elves
kill Conner
send Fenris back to his master
kill Merrils clan -
let the Arishok take Isabela
kill Anders - nothing horrible about that
let Meredith kill Bethany
kill Avelines husband instead of letting Aveline do it
not helping the people of Crestwood
letting the chargers die
not helping the people in Emprise du Lion

I'm sure I forgot a few things

You forgot leaving the folks of Redcliff to die. Wow, when you go dark you really embrace it. :P
My jerk characters did all of these things except kill Leli, leave Sten, give Fenris back, and let Meredith kill Bethany.

Maybe its because I love samurai movies with tragic endings, but I have this habit of deliberately doing awful things to my characters and NPCs simply to create the most dramatic story paths I can. I'm curious as to whether anyone else likes to find creative ways of tormenting their characters? (Or am I just a weirdo?)

Some notable examples of me pulling the heads off my (virtual) Barbie dolls include:

- Romanced Alistair in Origins with my F!HN and was planning to rule with him as Queen, but recruited Loghain at the Landsmeet (she could not bring herself to make Anora watch her father die) and sent Alistair off to become a drunk. Unable to live with the guilt of what she had done to the man she loved, she made the Ultimate Sacrifice to kill the Archdaemon.

- Deliberately romanced Cassandra with my Inquisitor and meta-gamed so she would become Divine, knowing she would break up with him in the end. He finished up losing his girlfriend, losing the Inquisition, losing his hand, and being left with nothing but an iron determination to stop Solas if it's the last thing he does.

So, does anyone else do this, or am I just a sadist? (masochist?)

If you have any stories of horrible things you did to your characters, feel free to share.

Yep.  I love seeing the different paths the game can take.  Unfortunately a lot of those bad things happened on my first (canon) playthrough.  My Inquisitor took some major loses.

Not here. My Femhawke has it a lot worse... I killed romanced Anders, for one. And sacrificed my Warden, if that counts.

Making Isolde do it gains you extra points in bastardry.

I really wish there was more consequence to that choice. Going to the circle for mages should have had a downside because as it was it ended up being an easy out. The choice should have been to kill Connor, kill Isolde, or go get mages and some thing bad happens in Redcliffe while you are gone (Connor runs wild and kills the rest of the villagers, resulting in you fight the final battle without Redcliffe forces?).

Not really,the argument doesn't make sense since present an huge lack of vision of the situation.
Going to the circle  is the best thing to do from a logical point of view,even if Connor would start to show sign of possession before that the Warden return,others member of the party can kill him in the meantime,you don't need to be there to kill him,others can do it,while in the meantime you try to use this other option.
The demon also prefer to not be disturbed if Connor is not in danger he will not possess the boy.
It wasn't an easy out,the warden lose time by travel to the cirlce,it was an intelligen and clever out.
Your argument is flawed by the fact that you believe that the protagonist is necessary to kill a child,which isn't, anyone can do that if he start to show evident sign of possession
Kill Connor or sacrifice his mother  without even try to gain the lyrium is just an evil choice,as is stupid Jowan and Morrigan who suggest this

I've never really thought that the idea of killing Aveline's Templar husband instead of letting her kill him herself was such a horrible thing to do. In fact it was probably better that way considering the fact she could not blame herself for killing him out of bereavement. Aveline was already in distress at the time. She did not need anymore.

You've actually did her a favor by sparing her that dreadful decision.

I don't know what to make of that decision. I could view it on a personal level like I'm just doing Aveline a favor, like you're saying. Or maybe it's symbolic, and Wesley represents the old Templars. Having Aveline kill him is like having the public (who she stands for) kill off the Templars. And then there's Flemeth's line afterwards. Not sure who it works better for. "Without an end, there can be no peace."

Or maybe I just shouldn't think about it.
