We already know that Frostbite is capable of rendering realistic-looking hair, so it's not an issue with the engine. I just think it's BioWare; I think they either don't care that much about it or whoever is doing the hair for their games just isn't very good at it. I hope they step up their game with Andromeda.
EDIT: Their character models are also lagging behind the competition as well.

yeah I think it's Bioware too tbh Because although the Rory Mcilroy golf game dosen't have many options what it does have kind of works well and it has hair physics tooand like DAI it uses the frostbite engine. Bioware has already put cloth physics on armours and things in DAI they just need to step it up and include hair in that as well. Throw in a few new hairstyles and add a couple of shoulder length ones and they should be fine. If they keep the ones that were there for DAI for those that prefer shorter hairstyles then hopefully that should do the trick as although the options aren't great there are 1 or 2 in there that are OK
Sorry but those hair still look unrealistic and very wig-like especially The Witcher (unless you're a fan of matted stiff dry hair)... and I find that you either want one and sacrifice the other. Movement or texture or physics, but you wont get all of them.
But I'm not seeing what is the main issue here. Is this a complaint about Bioware's treatment of hair in Dragon Age Inquisition? Comparison between games? Because frankly, Mass Effect 3 did right with the hair thing. I have the same shade and highlights as my ME3's Shepard did and the game did render it right. It even changes with direct sunlight... even if there's some transparency issues,
But the only hair thing that I'm worried about with Mass Effect in general... please no more 20 different style of buzz cut or bun placement.
And I think most animators would agree say that CGI hair realistic is the most difficult thing they've ever done so I never really expect the natural hair (texture/movement/physics) to be coming into customized-main character video games any time soon. Yes, near-realistic CGI hair is possible.. but only for rendered CGs, like Final Fantasy games or Pixar movies.
There's a reason why soldiers and professional fighters keep their hair short, so their hair doesn't hinder them in combat. Bioware are just being realistic.

Somebody hasn't played TW3 on a decent rig then...

Yes, we definitely needed another hair thread.
You can never talk enough about Trump's cranial bird's nest.

Exactly! There's no reason for a soldier to have long hair; it's a hindrance in a fight.
I'm sorry, but hair is something you painfully suck at. Amateur modders have no problem making nice LONG hair, why can't YOU do it?
Darn you and your butt UGLY bald or ridiculously short hairstyles that are all stiff as concrete. I know the female PC is supposed to be badass but that doesn't mean she can't also look pretty and feminine. You can be "one of the guys" without looking like the guys.
ME3 was the only game where a bit of effort into making nice looking hair actually started show a little. Needless to say the first two were pretty disappointing in that department, as were the DA games (the hairstyles in DAO were hideous, DA2 was fairly decent, but then did a U turn and went back to being ugly and pathetic again in DAI).
Hair is an extremely important cultural thing, you know. It's the pinnacle of status symbols. When you look at someone, what is usually the first thing you notice about them? It's almost always their hair. Having nice looking hair is a pretty big deal in any culture. Hence why I don't understand why you insist on forcing everyone to have such hideous mops adorning their heads. It's cruel.
Pretty please put some work into rendering some decently attractive hairstyles this time around... please?!
Literally everything else is so high definition and pretty looking... WHY NOT HAIR??
hair isn't easy to make and in DA:I and DA:O they were using new engines. The way you make assets, how those assets interact with engine are all different. So while some skills are transferable not all are. hair has Always been one of the most difficult things to create in games. I suspect that ME:A will see an improvement in hair designs because they have more experience working with the frostbite engine now.
Long hair is perhaps the worse thing to render in a game because of the physics that play on hair or the lack of physics, when it is long, and how it can clip so much with every other mesh near it. It isn't as easy as implied. There are so many assets in a game that they can't spend years on it, a modder can spend a LOT longer in terms of man hours on any given asset because they aren't trying to remake every single asset in the game. They typically focus on one type of asset. That gives them an advantage.
I don't really care if there are long hair options as long as the short haircuts actually look good. Which never happened in a Bioware game before, sadly. Looking at DAI it's only getting worse.

Although mods allows to add a huge variety of haircuts (which is great) most of them tend to look ridiculous.

EA/Bio is mum on this but I believe Mass Effect: Andromeda will support DX12. That is good. Also, it's been confirmed
https://twitter.com/...f_src=twsrc^tfw that Bio will use PBR techniques to make realistic looking objects and apparently PBR makes life easier for the devs. Again, all good.
Unfortunately, I can't find Bio talking about hair. PBR may very well require a meaty GPU card to show off all that eye candy.
Seems to me game play, proper keyboard re-mapping features, good story takes precedence over photo realistic game objects. And let's not forget good hair styles .... no wigs this time!
Early pre-renders of BioWare's new Hego in-game hair tech have leaked onto the Internet...
Yea as much as i like Bioware games the whole hair thing seems to have always seem to be an after thought to them? or maybe they just have issues with it.
I can see why they would be limited if a long hair style clips through armor any, would cause some to throw a fit.
I'm not an expert but I do mod for DAI and the biggest issue with DAI hair is that it has no transparency which is why it looks like tree bark. Without going into too much detail, the hair texture file has an alpha channel that is greyscale: 100% white and the hair is completely opaque and 100%, it's invisible. Anything in between and it's semi-transparent like hair appears to be at the ends. With DAI though this channel is used as a mask in that the engine only recognises black or white and nothing in between. This can't be a limitation of the engine because they have other meshes which appear to be semi-transparent like glass. It would also be ridiculous if FB3 couldn't do it when every engine before for the last ten years as had done so I don't know why they didn't use transparency for hair (or feathers).
They should add extra braids and locks in addition to the new hairstyles.

I think they showed with DA2 tha they'er capable of doing it if they put an effort in. Even if they just copied those hairstyles onto the new engine it would be an improvement.

Can I get fluffy short hair? Because I have short hair and I don't put bowl of oil on them. Gib me fluffy hair.

DA2 used the Unreal engine, I believe. Certainly not Frostbite.
Americans debating the quality of beer? How .... amusing.
