It's insanely powerful. A great replacement for AR if non-soldier class.

Interestingly, I chose the Tempest as my close range weapon rather than a shotgun when I did a Sentinel insanity run. I don't like shotguns in Mass Effect 2 very much but playing a Sentinel forced me into close range combat, so I went with the Tempest and chose sniper rifle training. I do like using the Viper.

Yeah, the only shotgun that got my rhythm well was the Scimitar, but that sadly never gave much punch. And most of the heavy weapons like the Arc Projector's ammo is rare to find in a mission.

SMGs are really a good go-to weapon when there's alot of enemies (and Swarms).

One of my favorite guns in ME 2 and my favorite smg in the entire series.  Like the OP said it makes picking up AR training on the collector ship unnecessary.  Of course I still do from time to time simply for the mattock but it no longer feels necessary.

I'm a bit of a cheat since I mod my Shepard's who can't use an Assault Rifle at the start to be able to use them (as it was the bonus power I always gave to classes who couldn't train in it in the first game).

Given that I default to the Mattock as my primary weapon just for the ammo level and sniper level punch it has. The Locust though is my fallback weapon as it is effective at all ranges and is unlikely to ever run out of ammo.

The best thing about Locust is you can get it at the very beginning of the game.

Wasn't impressed with it using my infiltrator play though. Got to say I love it with my vanguard how ever. Considering my biotic powers are less them impressive.

I don't think Locust is that great. M-5 Phalanx on the other hand. Exterminate~~~

 

If you're an Infiltrator : Phalanx, Widow or Geth shotgun... get you through almost everything. If you want shield-stripping or armor-penetrating, power combo is good for all that.
