I did a couple of DAO runs without romances, and my canonical Hawke didn't romance anyone because all the romance options in DA2 were insane in some way. If Varric or Aveline had been options, my Hawke might have gone after them. As it was, my Hawke remained foreveralone.
same here,Marian Hawke is alone,they were all too insane in DAII.
Maybe Sebastian just for his money.

My main Hawke romanced nobody, simply because none of the options felt like they were for him, romantically speaking. My main Inquisitor felt the same way until he met Harding, which seems to count as romancing no-one in the Keep.
I tend to really enjoy Bioware's romances, but I only do them if I feel that type of connection between a love interest and a particular PC.

That is the only thing that tempts me, too -- the chance for more content with a character I truly like, and feeling "left out" of any kind of truly close bond with anyone. It's hard and rare enough to get any real affection from NPCs towards the PC as it is, and IMO it's a shame that the writers don't allow for a chance to build a platonic-love friendship or two as an alternative to the romances, something beyond the "normal" level of friendliness you can reach with all companions. Headcanon-wise, my Inquisito definitely has that kind of bond with Cass and Cole.
I'd really love them to strengthen the friendship bonds in these games (DA, ME and whatever other franchises they're pursuing). As it is, in order to have a really close relationship with someone, I feel like I have to romance them. With some characters (especially in ME2), I feel like you lose out on so much content and getting-to-know-you scenes with characters simply by not romancing them. There really ought to be some way for the game to identify your closest friendships.
Approval doesn't quite do it, because you can easily end the game with lots of characters at high approval, but not feel close to all of them. My first DAI PT was like that, but I only considered my Inquisitor to be close to a few of them. Heh, if only they might 'lock in' a best friend or two, the same way you can 'lock in' a romance.

Exactly. Approval basically just means "I agree with what you're doing". Not "I sincerely like and trust you" or "You are important to me". There's some overlap, but it's far from the same. You can potentially get max approval with a character you never used in your team and barely remembered to talk to, as long as you make the "right" choices during the main story missions and judgements. That works for professional approval or purely political support, but not genuine friendship.
Heh, if only they might 'lock in' a best friend or two, the same way you can 'lock in' a romance.
That is what I wish, yes. And it should be a player choice, not a writer-designed one-size-fits-all "best friend". That does not work at all, IMO, because it disregards both player/protagonist preference and the effects our choices may have on the NPC's opinion of us.

Isabella = STD
Anders = Split personality disorder mass murderer 6 o'clock news type
Merrill = Naive without reasoning or she had a death wish
Sebastian = choir boy boring

I have never ever been able to play a game with a romance available without romancing anyone.
The only exception was a ME1 playthrough but just because it was a Shepard that I specifically created for Tali.
