A default appearance we can modify that initially appears as a synthesis of many races/ethnicities, so a palette everyone can work from...

Good god... that is one handsome s.o.b.
I'm not ashamed to say I used the defaults for Shep too. Well, only went to the default for femshep in ME3. Prior to that I had been customizing her.
I do not care what ethnicity or mix of ethnicities they choose for default Shep, just as long as it looks like a decent real human being. Making it possible to create your own real looking humans in the CC is just a bonus as far as I'm concerned.

Is there a particularly meaningful distinction in the end result? Whatever the method, I'd rather have presets we can alter.I can almost guarantee you they do not do any sort of 'face scan.'
They obtain high quality photographs from different angles and carefully model the face.

Would it be so hard to drop Blender into the game so we could mess with stuff?

I hope we can customise the default protagonist. I always wanted to customise Sheploo.

I never used Sheploo. I did, however, prefer to use the ME3 femshep default. Though I would have liked the ability to make edits to her. Would have liked a way to customize default Hawke, as well.
Anyway, answering the question; if they go white as the default again, Fergal Devitt/Finn Balor and Becky Lynch;
If they don't go white, then Manu Benett and Raukura Turei;

Manu's face is too aged.
The new main char is greenhorn rookie that you make into a legend. Would make sense for him to be younger

He can be a late bloomer.

But, ok. If we need someone more youthful than Manu, we'll go with Roman Reigns.

They should model Eva Green for no reason other than I would really like to play as space Eva Green. They need to get the hair right though.

Character creator in ME1-3 for male shep was hella bad. No matter how many times i tried creating a custom maleshep that resembled me, i always ended up with a middle aged filipino instead. I would have had just as much luck in trying to create a femshep that resembled me tbh.

Yeah, the middle aged fillipino for me too. Or some montrosity like Chairman Burns.
I'll go with Sheploo.

I have no shame in saying that I used the Default Shepard and I am hoping that ME:A has a Default Designer Model Protagonist for both genders. Also it would be nice if there is two options for voice overs with one being an American and the other being British/English. I would definitely like a to see and hear a British/English accent on a female model protagonist in ME:A.
I agree with your point on the preset but after DA:I I am 100% against Bioware hiring 4 voice actors to voice the protagonist, Giving a player this options dramatically increases the cost of voicing the game. If the Protagonist is responsible for about 35%-40% of the lines of dialogue in the game which may seem high but don't forget that most conversations in the game will include the player. You have just increased the cost of voicing the game by an additional 35%-40% that is a HUGE chunk of the dialogue budget which means we WILL get less content in other dialogue BECAUSE game budgets are finite. When you increase the budget in one area you have less money for other features. I do not think that this player choice in this area is worth the cost. Choice isn't free it comes at a cost and frankly player choice is a mantra that players say with almost zero thought to the implications of what said choice would cost.
Here is a post by David Gaider about developing party members/companions and it talks about how they create dialogue and how their budget creates how many lines they can afford to add into the game. So there is a direct link to people feeling that the companion stories were shallow and short to the number of companions in the game AND the fact that they used 4 voice actors for the protagonist in DA:I vs just 2.

I won't be using default, but I don't mind it being there. I just hope they won't use some cool hairstyle or something for protagonist that we can't use for non-default characters. I hated that we couldn't use fem!Hawkes hairstyle.
Mods? (I think you will see xbox creating a mod section for games like steam has with the advent of Bethesda bringing mods to xbone for Fallout 4. If you don't have a PC. This I suspect will trickle to PS4 as well, as Bethesda plans to eventually include mods for PS4. )

You can blame that on the people who just had to have unique races at the 11th hour "because humans are boring.. I am already human in real life" (do they all copy and paste this statement? I don't know), and trashed DA2. And enjoy playing more open ended characters like they do in TES, rather than anything with an origin story.
Luckily it won't happen in MEA.

DAI apparently was very hard to mod even in PC so I guess we will see. I'm not really expecting any mods for PS4 though.

It's only because EA doesn't care to make the tools for it anymore. I don't see it changing.
Bethesda's always had a relationship with the mod community though.

I'm not too bothered about the default's appearance, but I hope they let us customise them. I might've used Sheploo if I could tweak him a bit. Bald and blue-eyed isn't my thing.
Actually, I'm hoping that we get a selection of well-made presets to use as a base (or a default, if the player chooses). Preferably different races so there's a variety of starting points. They'd need to be good presets though. DAI was a little off the mark, like with that one female preset was covered in olive green make-up! I had to remove it before actually working on her.
Oh, and whatever they do, I really hope they don't make default characters with features locked-off from the character creator! Drove me nuts that my favourite hairstyles in DA2 were only available to default Hawkes, not custom ones.
