They aren't even 3D. I'm pretty sure they took screenshots in unreal engine of ME1 and carefully placed the shots as the background. Here's some proof. (about 2 mins in)

It has text in the shots even.

I have bad news for you. The entire game is fake.

I know what you mean though. Interesting video

Clever. They didn't have to compile and include in the final package the ME1 map again.
Thanks for the video!

There are a lot of 2D areas in Mass Effect 3. Thankfully I find most of it hilarious as they are so obvious.

Makes sense. Why would they render a whole room in 3d if it's only going to serve as a background for a 2 minute conversation? Though I'd love to be able to walk around the council chamber à la ME1 again, but that's a different story.

It's fun to see how flycam sheds light on the methods they use to create cutscenes.

It's not uncommon in games for background objects or walls to only be textured on one or two sides, either.  Making vidya gaems is expensive, in addition to that they didn't have a whole lot of time to make ME3.

Textures reduce draw calls, good texture work is pretty underappreciated, if they literally rendered everything as realistic as you thought the games would chug even on a beastly computer!

They've been doing the same thing IRL for centuries. :D
