The best Warden for the Warden contact role is whoever works for you.

Some people always leave Alistair a Warden and can't imagine a worldstate where it isn't him. Some crazy people always spare Loghain and can't imagine a worldstate where he's not the one, (crazies) so for them they can't imagine the Warden contact being anyone else. Some people like not having to choose between their precious Mary Sue Hawke and a character they might care about, so they prefer Stroud. (Although both my boyfriend and I both had at least one worldstate where it was between Stroud and Hawke, and we both independently chose to leave Hawke behind because we just like Stroud better.)

I just depends on the player's preference.

I'll happily grant that players have preferences but why call Hawke a Mary Sue? We are talking about Dragon Age 2, where one of the biggest complaints was that no matter what you did things went to pot. A Mary Sue would have saved the day, removed Justice from Anders, saved her mother, kept the sibs from terrible fates, and looked amazing doing it. This is not Hawke. Attachment to a character does not automatically mean that the character in question is perfect.

On that note I would say Stroud, or if they'd put them in Nate or the Sib would have made good contacts, also Alistair if you didn't put him on the throne. I really cannot see Hawke warming to Loghain, because of Ostagar even as a mage since Loghain was the one who ordered the Bann of Lothering to march in support just after the loss at Ostagar according to the Templars in DAO. They might work together but I can't imagine Hawke becoming best buddies with him. In that scenario, if the sib was recruited or Anders still lives, they might point Hawke toward Loghain as help. If none of those factors are true and Nate's still alive, it'd probably on his recommendation, though I can't imagine Nathaniel having any more love for Loghain than Hawke.

If none of that is true... damned if I know how Hawke and Loghain met. Maybe investigating Anders after the fact?

This is my personal opinion, and I understand it has no relevance on the actual game as published.

But I still believe that the best Warden contact for Hawke would have been a Warden Carver or a Warden Bethany. Obviously, this does not apply if they did not become Wardens, but I believe this is the best, most logical choice for the narrative if they had.

Can you imagine the bickering between Hawke and Carver in this scenario if they were rivals? Bethany trying gently to explain the Wardens' rationale to Hawke if they were not rivals?

And for many players, it would have made Here Lies the Abyss even more brutal than it currently is.

Warden Loghain made the most sense to me. Not only did he show the chance my Warden gave him was worth it, but he truly grew as a character. Having the Wardens not trust him and call him a traitor fit perfectly based on his past with them and why he'd be hiding from them when he first spoke up against their plans and was known for his past paranoia regarding them.

I wish we could have played as Hawke and had either Loghain or whomever was the contact be a guest companion for that quest line. In this case for me, Loghain. He was my favorite character in the entire series

I've seen all three, now.

Stroud makes the most sense from a plot and setting perspective.  Corypheus was in the Vimarks in the Free Marches, so it was under his jurisdiction, and he has the most chance of having met Hawke.

Loghain makes the most sense from a character perspective.  Simon Templeman as a voice actor seems to really bring through the regret he feels, making amends for what he did.  At the same time, he's had experience turning against his own people, so it's both a repeat of what he did, and an atonement.  Once again, he is fighting Wardens for what he believes is the greater good, except this time he's right.

I like Alistair best as a character, and so I liked having him to talk to at Skyhold and so on.  But I can't help but think he's better as a much-loved king than as a Warden who has to (yet again) go into hiding to fight the world for what he knows is right.  After Origins, he deserves a break :P

Stroud was just an unneeded character. No development. Nathaniel Howe would have been perfect as the guy who saved Hawke's sibling. The logical choice of who to save was the Warden contact over Hawke. They need a Loghain or Alistair leading them. Hawke doesn't offer as much.

Nate would have made sense. If you were a Cousland and befriended him, he saves your brother at the end of DAA. Stroud was a nice guy, really sweet too, but I agree he was a bit random. Probably since people love Alistair and Loghain, having one you are not attached to would be the 3rd choice. Sadly though that only works for Alistair fans since Loghain has to be dead already.

Except for the fact Howe could be dead and buried. As could Alistair and Loghain.
