The games and lore all hint at Templars being themselves mages: the order comes from the mage-led inquisition, their Seekers cousins bound with spirits of faith to gain their abilities, templars negate the mages' spells by reinforcing the veil with their minds and their powers are reinforced by Lyrium: everything point toward the Templars being mages whose denial about their very nature as mages affects the way their powers manifest.
Carver specializes as a templar.
Not to mention- in any unmodded worldstate where Carver lives both his father, sister, sister/brother, and all of his cousins are mages. The only non mage Amells that are present in game are Gamlen, Leandra, Charade, and Carver (also a non-mage Hawke if you are playing one) Their were six or seven other children plus the three Hawkes in Hawkes generation of Amells and the only two that did not end up mages were Charade and a non-mage Hawke, and Carver . The other part of the argument in support of the fact that Kieran (granted his father is Alistair) will probably be a mage is that a) he carries a soul of a Tevinter Old God- granted the explanation that most or all of those that the Theodosian races consider to be Gods are actually either very powerful (e.g. beyond anything known in modern Thedas) mages, or spirits -- Urthemiel is a mage or has whatever form of magic spirits have and ,Kierans grandmother is Flemythal- Flemeth was pretty powerful on her own- however many hundreds of years ago she was in her original body (not one of her daughters) and that is doubled or even tripled by carrying the spirit of Mythal--c) his mother is Morrigan who is pretty powerful on her own- and if she accepts the spirit of Flemythal eventually she will have that as well.. d) His grandmother is Fiona- who was powerful enough to survive the Architects tinkering, and the Joining and his the leader of all but the few Loyalist mages that follow Vivienne and was previously the Grand Enchanter of the College of Magi meaning she was powerful and knowledgeable enough to lead ALL the mages of Southern Thedas - at least those who adhered to the Circles. There is a very minimal chance Kieran Theirin won't be a mage- and unless Leiliana literally tears the Chantry apart from the top down and entirely rebuilds it - he cannot rule- mages are no allowed to hold lands or titles in Southern Thedas- the only nation in Thedas what would consider him the heir to the Theirin line in that case (illegitimate or not since half the magisters are probably sleeping with elven slaves to get mage babies) would be Tevinter- and pretty much everyone discounts the opinions of Tevinter on everything - especially in Southern Thedas. Esp if you consider Templar powers to be a school of magic (the anti-magic school as it were)-- genetics cannot be discounted and magic appears to be a dominant gene in Kierans family
