It depends on what class I choose to play as. Tali stays with me pretty much on every mission in ME1 because Geth(and usually, tech access). And she is so important to that story...I get all big sis protector about her. unpopular opinion: I love Ashley. Man I got that chick Spectre class weapons and she was the truth. Plus I get her...I don't always agree with her but I get her.

Agree on both counts. Tali's crucial to the plot (literally makes Shep's Spectre career), a useful combatant given her tankiness, anti geth abilites and serving as a door/ crate opener, and is a loyal to a fault, fearless, shotgun toting sassy little badass. Bringing her on missions and hearing her banter helps to give characterization that she sometimes doesn't get as much of in on ship conversations, and she provides insight in particular during missions involving geth.

Ashley grounds the setting with a very believable human perspective. Her personality is a little bit of a forced "cheesy badass" at points but I think that's endearing in a way. I don't like the rap she gets for supposedly being a "racist" and find her perspectives to be very nuanced.  As far as actual gameplay utility goes, she's a great tank and deals out decent damage with a good rifle or sniper, but she lacks offensive powers and doesn't really serve quite as much purpose if you have Wrex, Kaidan or Garrus in those more specialized roles. Still plenty effective on any difficulty in combination with Tali's tech and pretty much any Shepard.

Love taking the same squad lots of places in ME3 as soon as I get them, as well, especially considering they seem to grow into close friends (Ashley calls Tali her "little sister" at one point).

It has been a while, but I pretty much always used Garrus just because he is..Garrus. I used to bring Tali or Wrex along. Wrex for tankiness and biotics and Tali for specific skills. Encryption I think. So I mostly used her as a hacking tool

Kaidan and Wrex. After my Renegade Vanguard had them as his #1 team, I have had difficulties to choose other people and am now a bit flabbergasted how I didn't realize to use Kaidan on my first playthrough (even if I did save him on Virmire). Kaidan has amazing versatility and has tricks up his sleeve for pretty much any situation (biotics, tech, crowd control, healing). Wrex is an awesome tank who can cause some serious havoc with Shepard.

 

They also offer a nice set of personalities. It was fun playing my Renegade Shep since Wrex was a lot like him whereas Kaidan was sort of the voice of reason and, on several occasions, ended up acting as his moral compass. He was like "the dad" of their group   ("Okay kids, chill out. We can solve this without blowing some **** up again.").
