So Very Disappointed…
*Uninstalls Dragon Age from her computer*
I have only been this disappointed one other time in my life
and that was the début of NWN2. and now we have its clone. AUGHHHHHHHH!! What a
total bummer.
I don’t want to watch a #&%$ movie!
Just as in NWN2, with Dragon Age you are immediately forced
onto companionships… forced companionships remove your choices…
The perfect example is the traitor Bishop in the NWN2 OC.
You know he’s a no-good, but you can do nothing. In reality you would slit his
throat as he slept, or at the least run him off… but no… with forced
companionship you have no choice!
And right from the very start, Dragon Age forces you into
companionships… as Johnny Jerkweed insists “I must accompany you to the
kitchen”. Unbelievable!
Without true choices, you’re not playing a game; you’re just
watching a predetermined movie in which your PC is the star… UCK!
*fires up the NWN toolset*
Back to work!

In what game do you have true choices?
In what game can you truly do exactly what you want and still end up winning?
Have you played other games at all?
Thanks for watching the show, thank you and good night

You can always tell people who have tagged along to gtfo of your life at some point. It's just later in the game.

You get more party members and can keep and boot who you like from your personal party. Of course, later you don't have to let everyone join your group. It's the only way to keep a good story though. Can't kill the cast too fast

Its a "role" playing game. Either you play the role of your character or dont buy the game.

A huge part of the fun in this game comes from the tactics of the fights, for which you need a party, so it should be no surprise that they are forced on you.
It seems you expect another type of game than you have bought, which is kinda sad, but on the other hand it should be no surprise that DA:O is a rpg game with a party and not a single character as that has been stated several times during the development/hype of the game.

Bottom line, this is an amazing game, and the fact that your complaining about a feature that was only put there to make the storyline work better is a bit petty.

I have not goten the game yet and i know that it will be like this.
But I still agree, forced companions is a very bad thing.

Maybe you can kill off the annoying NPC in some very bloody sadistic way. You know to make up for the forced companionship. Hell maybe you can slit his throat while he sleeps. Which leads me to a question. Can you kill quest NPC or should I say plot NPC?

Thinks...
Me: "You, Bar Wench! You will come with me to fight hordes of Darkspawn, ogres, and dragons deep within the bowels of hell itself. Here is your Claymore, and we're off"
Bar Wench: "%&*^ YOU"
Set companions to me are necessary in order to drive a story

You mean like ANY video game out there? Unless it's a game that forces you to make your entire party which I tend to find arduous. Look at all the other games Bioware has made.... did you expect the formula they use to make great stories to change? When they say, "From the makers of Neverwinter Nights 2, Knights of the Old Republic, and Mass Effect" did you really think, "Oh, I'm sure this will have none of the same gameplay as those..."

Sure....Who thinks TS hasn't actually uninstalled a game he/she bought after just playing what 30 minutes? Probably playing it right now.

A story based CRPG and complaining about forced NPCs. This is a Bioware game you are aware of, right? They have done this in KotOR, Jade Empire, and Mass Effect. If you did some research before buying the game you would have realize they are doing the same thing in Dragon Age. Doesn't anyone do informed purchases any more?

Fallout 1 and 2:)
The OP is right in a way. DOA is more like Mass Effect, Jade Emprire then BG and if my memory serves me right Bioware hyped this game as a game that builds on BG, but it seems to me that it builds more like on ME, KOTOR, etc and the only similarity to BG is that both are fantasy an have elves, dwars and dragons:)

Mount and Blade is the closest to what you describe, a real sandbox game. I know and understand what the OP is describing where you create your own party of characters from the start and adventure off with them without having too many or any other characters forced onto you.
At first I used to flinch at DA's style, but with Dragon Age I think party creation is actually irrelevant with this campaign setting, just like my job I don't get to choose who I work with, but I have a choice on how I interact with them.
I cannot tell the original poster what to do, but I suggest she actually play it through past the first major battle to where you can travel via the world map and choose which direction to take.

Fallout 1 and 2 are not story driven games, and neither is Morrowind. Hell, in Morrowind people got so lost that they couldn't even figure out where to start the main quest.
