Hi! I intend to start the MP quite soon (at most by the weekend), and I'm trying to get a Platinum. I need 100 Overloads.

For that, I'll need to start as an Engineer, which I didn't want to.

The Human Engineer seems weak to me. In any case, before I ask my question, I'll post a quick background:

- Played the first 3 games on the following difficulties: Normal (Soldier), Veteran (Infiltrator) and Insanity (Infiltrator)

- Finishing the trilogy again as a Vanguard: Hardcore (Insanity wasn't unlocked), Insanity, Insanity

In all games, I always had a bit of trouble at first, but starting mid game, things got much better and in the late game I was (am, in case of ME3 which I haven't finished yet) able to obliterate enemies, dying only occasionally.

So, playing Bronze matches with an Engineer, should it take too much time to reach lvl 20 and will I have the opportunity to Overload 100 shields in that timeframe?

Welcome pilgrim. See XAN post on the time it takes to complete a manifest. That said, XAN have good reflexes, and nice friends that he could drag through plat and share insider tips on game mechanics with (around 1200 hours is the average investment time 4 addicted gamers to complete it)

If you are playing bronze, forget about plat and just enjoy it. Dragonracer sticky is ur friend- forcing a manifest on day 1 and yourself is no good way to start a love affair.

I would say that Insanity in SP = silver in multiplayer. The fact that you can't pause the action in MP and can't control your teammates makes it significantly harder. Enemies will also attack you more in your back and on your flanks in the MP.

The human engineer is a very strong character but admittedly not the most user-friendly for a beginner, as he's quite fragile. You should be fine however in bronze and get those 100 Overloads while you level up your character. The first ranks will be gained fast but in bronze it will be very slow at the end, when you approach level 20. If you're comfortable enough, a good strategy would be to switch to silver when you're at level 16-17.

You'll overload 100 shields before you  hit level 20. I barely played Bronze, but silver was good for 200-250k experience per game, which was good for several levels early (maybe 1-12), a full level from 13-18, and a half a level from 19-20. So you'd probably need 12-15 silver games to level up from nothing to 20. It's been a long time since I've done that though, so it could be a little faster or slower, depending on your team.

Maybe it's because I'm not used to Combat Drone. I don't know if that power is good.

As for the rest of the tips, thanks. I might start Bronze and switch to Silver soon.

Pausing the game is mostly important for a Vanguard, which I intend to be my main character after I finish the Overloads. I admit that the lack of pause will be quite troublesome as I use pause often in order to find my next charge victim. I'll have to get used to it.

Mainly, it's just that I can't see Combat Drone as strong as other class powers like Adrenaline Rush, Biotic Charge or the stealth stuff from the Infiltrator.

I may be wrong as the only times I've used that was when I had Tali on my squad.

no pause is quite traumatic at start, then u slowly forget about it.

Novaguard is one of the best kit to start with, cause free shield reload, but u ll wipe the floor a bit :) as it should be when u carge in the wrong place. So u might wanna learn how to nova cancel to be almost invulnerable.

u could try to chain incinerate and overload to get a combo at each cast. Shock drone and level 6 drone are really good to distract a group of mooks

Thanks for the tip on the Engineer.

I know how to nova cancel, I just don't have the habit of doing it. It might need to create it :P

If you're planning to use Vanguards, apart from the Krogan, Batarian and (build-dependent) Cabal, it's worth bearing in mind that hosting is highly preferable on any level above Silver. And if you are hosting with a low level account, be sure to equip some consumables as a sign to the people joining your lobby that you aren't planning to quit the moment the going gets tough.  Low level hosts strike fear into the hearts of many of us old-timers.

Human Engineer is totally awesome btw, and don't let anyone talk you out of taking an exploding, shocking drone with you at all times.  Chances are you'll unlock a Falcon early on, which, along with Chain Overload, makes him a stagger machine - something which would greatly help while you're still getting used to not being able to pause the action.

This is a good tip, but I need to get consumables first :P

I'll look for Human Engineer builds then, as I might use it until close to lvl 20.

....

True. Esp on vanguard & hosting:

For vanguards this is my rule of thumb:
- There are friends on ur FL that are just awesome; and/or
- Then there are friends where u *also* can look awesome (indepedent of their skill level) even though they're hosting.

This subtle difference can remove a lot of frustration on one's own scrubbiness.

Just jump right into platinum.  That's what every scrubby pug does anyways...

I'd rather not -_-

I take MPs a bit more seriously, so I won't dive into higher levels until I'm good enough to do so.

Nah.  Just do it.  It won't change pug games.  It's fine.  80% of plat players are looking to get carried.  You'll fit right in.

Plus, it's the fastest way to learn...

I still won't do it. I don't like to suck, mainly in MPs. I don't believed I'd learn fast as I'd feel useless. I know the weapons from common packs are not good enough. Plus, I want to try to find some good partners and if I suck, that may difficult the task -_-

High DPS and something to help mitigate armor, like AP ammo.  Warp or kill it with fire.  That's it.  Plat is boss spam.

Just as long as you are trying, it'll be fine.  Or just run around reviving people.  That can be helpful too.  Lol!

This game has been around for soooooooo long that no one really cares anymore.  This game is almost dead...

Don't say that, I intend to play it for a few months.I hope I can find some matches. Going solo ends up being boring at the end.

Without seeing your manifest, I would recommend something like this for the basic human engineer: http://kalence.drupa...111!!..91!E98.G

Or, for the Novaguard: http://kalence.drupa...131!!..91!G.DDG

In fact, the basic humans are all squishy, but quite good, some builds to follow:

Adept: http://kalence.drupa...111!!..91!GFD.G(Note: On PC, Radius evolution of Shockwave rank 4 is bugged, do not take it if on PC, otherwise, take it)

Sentinel: http://kalence.drupa...11!!..91!EFD.GG

Also, Mantis is a GREAT weapon, easily best common, I used Avenger on this characters, simply because it's not a bad gun, and is lightweight enough for no-passive builds. Other than trying to stay alive (which is a great lesson to learn), these builds are centred around comboes (Warp->Throw, Incinerate->Overlord, Singularity->Shockwave, etc), which also are a good lesson to learn for MP.

Anyways, welcome to the MP. If you're on PS3, we can play some games sometime, my alt is finally starting to not suck.

A few pieces of advice, off the top of my head:

- Those starting human classes - very powerful and very underrated. Don't give up on them if you don't develop a feel for them right away.

- Get each class to level 20. After that, get on youtube and look for guides on builds and general tactics. It will speed up your learning curve immensely. Personally, I drank from the wells of wisdom of INVADERONE, IxAMSHADRACH and Stardusk.

- Buy the cheapest packs until you max out your common and uncommon weapons. Of those, the Mantis and the Mattock are very good, I take them into Platinum matches without any problems. You can make some of the others works as well, but only after you've gathered some experience with the game. Yes, Incisor is OK, come at me, BSN! B)

- Once you've maxed those out, you can try your hand at Gold. There is a sharp increase in difficulty from SIlver to Gold, so stick with it.

- If you get addicted to the game, don't be alarmed, we've all been there.
