AI

I am just coming from "Pillars of Eternity" which claims to place emphasis rather on things like story and AI,
over graphics and effects.
And yet I realized that I could separate even the largest groups of enemies easily
just by stepping on their "trigger points" and running away, then turning around in the right moment.
Many times enemies then even turned away from me and slowly walked while they were standing directly next to me ;-)
In ME:
enemies communicate your position.
they hear your footsteps.
They see and hear you cloak or shadowstrike.
They systematically do what they are best at (for example Dragoons charging at you).
They prioritize their target based on a reasonable aggro system - they even factor in player's current
score and health status (if I recall correctly).
line of sight + sounds + communication instead of trigger points
It (almost) never happens that enemies behave ridicuously - by that I mean for example that they don't find you
or don't come to you although they are just an obstacle away.
Other opinions ?
I know that Pillars of Eternity is a different Genre. Maybe someone who understands more about game mechanics
could shed some light on that ? DAI's AI was a big disappointment, too. I think it also is triggerpoint-based
and in this f***** Ferelden Castle hords of enemies just seemed to rush at me (and mostly from only one direction)
until the budget was depleted which was pretty boring.

Thx for the info on that game. BG2 SoA is my favourite game arguably of all time. Was considering getting PoE. What're your thoughts on it as a whole? I heard the dialogue gets tedious, but dunno much else about it. Er Obsidian's lovechild right? (Still will not forgive them for KotOR2)

Not sure I can answer the specific question of "why". I would note that in my experience distance to enemy is probably weighted the highest; distance over current health/shields/etc. Albeit sometimes a banshee is really stuck on someone and I see them running by me. I try to intercept and stop her porting so we can start dancing but occasionally she's really stuck on 'im. =/

The AI is dumb. The only way you get flanked is because they spawn behind or to the side of you.
They hear your footsteps? In a hail of fire LOL. Dragoons charge? It's all they can do. Run straight and whale on you. Aggro system? Yeah, let's shoot that guy on the other side of the map, while a Warlord and Juggy Reegar's and melees that Prime.
The A.I. is generic in most games and haven't improved since 2000's. It's all about purdy grafix and ****.

Mauraders stop shooting you and raise their arm like statue of liberty, cannibals suddenly get hungry when you shoot their brothers in arms.
The generic AI allows you to rush them. which makes them stop shooting you and tries to melee you. If they in stead kept on shooting at you before you reached them in melee range, you would probably be dead, and as it is, many of our own melee attacks are interrupted by either their own weapon stagger attacks or melee attacks
Like any game once you learn how the AI behaves, a krogan yells Their Dead!

You can also cheese all the enemies in PoE by equipping ranged weapons on your party and concentrating fire. Just like Baldur's Gate.
Admittedly, I'm not that far in, so maybe that changes once I get enemies that aren't giant fricking spiders and wraiths.

When you first start playing multiplayer, the AI can seem overwhelming. By the time you start playing Gold/Plat, you can see the formulaic tendencies of certain units. For example, the phantom, one of the deadliest enemies, can be forced into an extremely predictable pattern; targeting the phantom with a biotic or tech power will always result in the phantom casting barrier. This may nullify your power, but the phantom remains stationary and completely vulnerable to weapon fire for a good second or two.
However, It's definitely a very good AI system, better than any other franchise I've played. There are certain things that are very interesting in the different enemy behaviors. Geth will tend to form a perimeter around you, setting troopers in cover while Hunters will flank you. Hunters are by far the best designed AI in the game; they will come at you from a direction you are not facing more often than any other enemy unit.
Also I hate the Collectors. They got way stronger after I destroyed their base in ME2.

PoE is very good, I'd say even exceptional, 9/10. Way better than reskins of BGI and BGII by Beamdog which was a sloppy bad job. IMO, it is how modern RPG should look and feel. Dialogues are rather well written for a computer game, story is not bad, and if you don't want to read the whole thing, you can always skip. The best about it is complex combat system. It has very few exploits that were eventually fixed and is occasionally rather challenging. I played with whole party and then soloed on hard with a chanter. Both playthroughs were very enjoyable. The latest DLC (White March part 1) adds some really difficult battles and a decent side story.

It is not possible to do later in the game on hard or on PoD, need at least one good tank and have to use abilities/potions almost every turn. IMO, PoD is actually barely playable without min-maxing.

The AI in this game does an excellent job of appearing smart to a new player, but experience will quickly let you see their flaws.
- Enemies "flank" because that's where they spawned.
- Phantoms are incredibly dangerous but also incredibly easy to manipulate.
- Dragoons charge because that's all they know how to do.
- Cerberus mooks will toss a smoke grenade and then walk right through the center of it despite me unloading with a typhoon right at the cloud.
- Engineers are good at picking locations but will happily attempt to place a turret right in front of you.
- Hunters are cloaked but don't understand that they aren't actually invisible and will be easily spotted if they walk straight up to somebody in broad daylight.
- Marauders and cannibals will stop fighting and try to put on armor at the drop of a hat no matter how many free headshots it gives you.
- Praetorians won't hesitate to start flying even if they're facing a weapon class who can take advantage of that to unload on them with no fear of retaliation.
- Enemies will make no effort to avoid traps like recon mine or biotic sphere.
- Enemies will gladly throw themselves at a Juggernaut despite him being nigh-invulnerable and despite the fact that his team can now focus their deadliest attacks on them with no fear of retaliation.

I like the AI. It's not too hard but will still kick your ass if you're not paying attention. Granted I don't have much experience with AI since most games I play are pvp but I do think that other than a few problems here and there the AI in this game is a-okay.

It's sort of okay I guess, but the AI on Republic Commando and F.E.A.R. from a decade ago could kick this game's AIs arses. Killzone 2's AI from half a decade ago would make it cry for mercy.
I designed better AI's for F2P omnitool games while I was still a babby in the bubble. They all eventually rebelled against their users, but at least they didn't get completely fooled by the Box of Shame.

while u mention some (albeit also killzone3) of my and BloodBeforeTears favourites, who can forget Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon :mentions... F.E.A.R. ... Killzone ...

Nowadays this would probably be "lane-constricted" AI
